face of thermostat started to melt?

its worked just fine the past few years since installed, but in the past few weeks, its randomly said the internal temp of the house is high 90s and then shot down again to 72 on the app, and when I went check out the thermos itself I found the face partly melted? I checked the mounting wire on the back to see if there was anything wrong like loose or arcing wires, but there was no loose wire or anything out of the ordinary.

I've never felt any heat coming from my Nest thermostat (it looks like we both probably have the same model).  Is there a heat duct or electric heater nearby that heated the face of the thermostat?  Heat can compound over time and cause things to melt sometimes that are not otherwise expected to melt.

nope, there is no heating vent or heaters anywhere near it, the air filter intake for the HVAC is actually right above it in the hall and I am in Texas so there isn't any space heaters or heating vents beyond what the HVAC is able to do but even then heating is very rarely on. maybe it was bumped weirdly and a wire inside it or something inside it came loose and heated up? its kinda out of the way so Im not sure how likely it is someone did though.
