how to get the setup code

johncla
Community Member

Thermostat is installed and working. Just installed the Google Home app on my iPhone, I want to connect my iPhone to the Nest thermostat. The installer asks me to eithre use the QR code (on the back of the thermostat ! ) or the setup code (on the back of the thermostat !). So...if the QR code and the setup code are BOTH on the back of the thermostat....

How do I connect my iPhone to the Nest thermostat when I can't access either the QR code or the setup code?

Have you tried this...........

Settings - Nest App - Get Entry Key?

Sounds great!

I can open up the menu on the thermostat, and I see the settings icon. Tap it. Nothing happens.

This is a Nest Learning Thermostat, if that matters.

OK - I opened up the Nest App section in the settings menu. It says "connected" and won't let me do anything. Maybe the problem is that connection of one thermostat to multiple apps is not supported?

Multiple family members, one thermostat. Only one of us can connect? Just guessing...

There's another thread that suggests I need to follow these steps, getting an invite from the connected family member in Home, but that doesn't work either:

Hello folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for assisting here, @Frustratedddd.

@johncla, It appears that your thermostat is already added to an account. If you're logged in with the correct email address associated with your Nest Thermostat, you should see it in the Google Home app automatically. If it's not on the homepage, try checking for other available structures where your thermostat might be connected.

Please see this guide for instructions on how to switch home structures and invite family members. Let us know if that helps.

Best regards,

Mark

Thanks! This is helpful.

I have a Google account, but I assume the account associated with the thermostat is not that one. I'm trying to connect to a thermostat installed by a family member. Are you implying I need access to Uncle Bob's Google email account to log in to the thermostat?

How can I determine what email account is the one I need access to?

I'll look at the guide you point to. Thanks again.

I looked at the guide. It's not clear about what account I need access to.

Note that I did receive an invitation, and when opening up Home after accepting the invite I did not see any way to access the thermostat or any other device.

Hi johncla,

Thanks for letting me know.

Since it was set up by a family member, and if they do have access to the thermostat from the Nest app or the Google Home app. Check the apps to see what email address was used and ensure that they can see the thermostat on the homepage. If so, proceed with sending an invitation on their Google Home app.

Once you receive the invitation, follow the prompt to finish the setup.

Keep me posted on how it goes.

Best regards,

Mark

Thanks to everyone for the help, but for now at least the difficulty of getting access is greater than my need to have access. Too tweaky.

I'm leaving this in Uncle Bob's lap. He will set the temp remotely, not me.
