thermostat does nothing

I just installed a Nest basic thermostat but it just flashes the setup message on the thermostat and wont do anything else. what am I missing?

To continue with the steps, install the Google Home app on any supported iOS or Android devices. Once installed, create or sign in with your preferred email account and follow the prompt that appears in the app.
