Can not setup mesh wifi in Google Home app

Danielloser
Community Member

I have the package with 3 Google wifi points. I can setup 1 point as router successfully. It turned to solid white light. But when I added the other 2 points to the mesh network, I encounted too much failure situation. .e.g "Problem for connecting", "Connect failed",“request failed...”. And I had to aborted after many invalid tries. Anyone could commit any successful expierence or ways for setting up the mesh network? Thanks in advance!!!

Try with Google Home app from a different device (Android, iOS, iPadOS), logged in with the same Google account.

Try hardwire the 2nd node to the primary node during setup (from primary LAN port to secondary WAN port), let the 2nd node update itself and reboot before unplugging the ethernet cable and power, place it where you want it afterwards.

Hi,Thank you for your reply! I will try your opinions later. I want to mention a point that I am in China now. So are there some restrictions for the geography of China? My network links to north America. And my Google account has no problem for visiting. Do you know that? 🙂

From what I can find, I think everything Google is blocked in China by the CCP since 2014, you'd need VPN in order to access any Google service. So yeah, you being in China is likely relevant here/ the reson why it does not work.

Hi, Everyone,

I try to create the mesh wifi again today. I could make sure that I can visit Google websites and foreign internet very smoothly, and the blocked wall online by Chinese government can not make effect on my network. I succeeded in "Connect to point's wifi". But always failed on the step shown with "Add wifi point to mesh wifi". The error message is "Request failed. Please try again later". Could anyone tell me hints for this error? I don't know about the mechanism within the "Add wifi point to mesh wifi" step. How does google wifi points work on this step? Any websites they will connect? Your warm replies will be appreciated! 🙂

Hey, Danielloser.

Sorry for the connection issues you're having with your WiFi points. I imagine that's quite frustrating. Looking at your situation, I do have a few ideas of what might be going on, but it's always hard when we're working with a country that doesn't have official support.

The WiFi points use cloud services to communicate, and they're able to see your location and are subjected to any issues with blocking your region might create. Olavrb mentioned using a VPN, which may work for getting your points to function, but personalized results will fall outside your current local area. While our products may work in unsupported countries, there are always obstacles to making them work fully.

If you do try to use a VPN service, let us know if that solves the setup issue for you. Thanks.

Thank you for your detailed and warm reply. I will try it with some special ideas for the geography restrictions. If having some results, I will write it here. Thanks again!!! 🙂
