Google WiFi (Gen 1) Throttling Speeds from 500/500 to 100/100 almost daily.

Hi all,

Like the title, says, my 500/500 Fiber Internet is getting throttled by the Google WiFi mesh system to about 100/100 or 90/90 -- all wired connections and wireless connections are affected.

Interestingly, the Home app speed tests all show the correct speeds, usually around 485/490 which is correct. But a speed test with the puck wired directly to my PC is showing the throttled 90/90 or 100/100 speeds.

A network restart (Google WiFi puck restart) initiated through the Home app fixes the problem temporarily. All devices then get the correct speeds, wired and wireless. Unfortunately, a day or max 2 days later, the same thing happens again - throttled speeds down to 100/100. Tried my other router, no issues. Tried directly from the ONT, no issue.

This is not a DNS issue or anything like that, it seems like a strange software issue. What can be done? Is there a fix in place?

-Eddie

Almost then end of year 2022 and still no fix.  Thanks Google.  Not going to ever buy another low quality Google product again.  I mean even the interface was bad.  Phone only?  Really Google?  Finally learned my lesson.  Get a good router from anyone else because Google will not address the issue.  It's beenwhat 2 years now?

I have the same issue.  Both Wifi and wired!  All I do is go into the app and run a speed test and everything returns to normal for a few hours... and then slows down again.  I used to reboot the Google but now I found running a speed test from the app works just as well.

Anybody planning on testing the new WIFI Pro to see if it has the same issues?

Also having the same issues as everyone else on here. Tested, reset and have done all the steps noted. Anybody having any improvement?

Did not have any improvement at all. Keep restarting the Google WiFi does a temporary fix for 5-10 minutes for me, but back to the same issue afterwards.

Return it if you can.  Throw it out if you can't

I threw my Google Hub mesh away.  Throttled my 1G spead to 8MB.  Talk about rediculous.  Spent money on an ASUS router and hitting the 900MB speeds now.  Never again will I fall for another Google product.  I mean the interface on the phone alone was a horrible experience.  Being able to access my router via Browser or Phone and all the funtionality I don't know what I was thinking going with Google.

YEP!  100% agree

Mine worked fine with 400mb Spectrum cable, going to give it to my neighbor who still has that.  It sucks with AT&T 1G fiber, just went with their extender package, up to 3 extenders for a flat $10/mo.  Figured over maybe 4 years may be cheaper than  a 6E mesh setup.

I have given up.  Google tech support is absolutely the worst I have ever experienced.  It's within one year and I can prove it's defective but they refuse to exchange it.  They want be to do BS tasks like ask my internet provider for a dynamic DNS and telling me I have double NAT WiFi and that's causing the problem.  They don't even listen... I'm cabled into the unit!  No Wifi.
I'm sick of running the speed test in the app every few hours to restore my service to normal.
F - Google!  I'm replacing it with Amazon's EERO.   I will never buy another Google or Nest device as long as I live!  YOU ARE THE WORST GOOGLE / NEST!!!  Billions of dollars and won't swap a defective wifi system.

I'm not sure how you can mess up something as straight forward as a Router. How many more firmware updates will be pushed before google pull the plug entirely on this horrible product. It's almost like they are trying to add smart QoS behind the scenes to limit traffic in the way it thinks we want. Problem is it's terrible. Why would you limit traffic on a wired connection? I'm done with this product I used to love and recommend freely to friends and family. Shame

Wow, I just spent about an hour reading this entire thread on this issue to see if the Google team fixed this.  I got to the end and it was almost a year on this issue and nothing.  I can't believe a company so big as google can't fix this issue, and with so many users complaining about it.

Google team, is there any fix for this finally?

It got fixed for me after one of the updates... At least as far as I can tell it did.

Mine has been working as it should since November 10, software version 14150.376.32. I've since moved on to Xfinity Pods, gave up on waiting for a fix, but at least I can sell them now in good conscience.

Mine is still not fixed. Looks like it is time to run another speedtest in order to get over 10MB of my 400. Hey, Google! Any chance you can send the latest and greatest hardware? This product is unsatisfactory and it would be nice if you could remediate by issuing a credit or SOMETHING!

Having the exact same problem too, on Nest Wifi 14150.376.32 and intermittently gets capped to 10% of my ISP speed, a router restart temporarily(24 hours) resolves it. 😞

i took the advice of some in this thread and just bought a Deco 6e mesh. i’ll be decommissioning my google mesh this weekend.

I have had the same issue with no fix insight….looks like it is time to dump google wifi

My latest device speedtest has me at 12.3 Mbps download and about 19.8 Mbps upload. The last speedtest from my router indicates 559 Mbps down/25.1 Mbps up. Of course I can temporarily resolve for a few hours by running another, but I've had about enough of this ridiculousness, and am going back on the market for a new mesh router.

Replaced my Nest wifi routers with Tp-Link Deco, so far so good on getting full speeds. Such a shame this was not resolved already by Google.

I did the same thing.  I don't use the wifi from the Deco [just ethernet to my other mesh system] & so far seems to maintain connection & speed. Hasn't throttled me down yet.   If it does I'll update.  BTW, the set up was simple & it just worked.

I spoke too soon. After working for a week with the deco, speeds started being throttled again & connection keeps dropping. Had to be reset multiple times a day. It now looks like it’s not the hardware but the service from google. I guess next steps are to report throttling to the FCC.

Hi folks,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have and apologies for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Also, do you have any paused devices?

We know that you’ve already tried other options. It would be a pleasure to help you get through this. Kindly try these steps:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6:
    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
    2. Tap the Wi-Fi coin  and then Settings Settings.
    3. Scroll down and tap Advanced networking.
    4. Scroll down to IPv6.
    5. Toggle the switch off Toggle button off.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

You may skip any step that you’ve done already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

Dan

Did all of this didn't work!

At this point, I think a refund should be issued because this product never delivered.

Mine worked for the past few years then this happened. I think Google should send us the latest gen nest system, I bet with all the updates they send through the system the older ones can't keep up.

It has never worked.  People bought them knowing that when higher speeds became available they wouldn’t have to up garage their router.  But to many surprise the pods just don’t work as advertised.  All the things in the post have been tried.  And simple don’t work.

None of those steps have worked for me.  Finally got frustrated enough and banked the funds.  I still tried another hail mary with Google support last week but no dice, and no offer to help offset cost of newer wifi6 version.  Thus, I just received my UniFi gear today.  Excited to finally own my network performance.

My Metronet fiber has consistent speeds of 850-900, but the google mesh wifi is only getting 80-90, restarting network used to fix it for a couple of days, but no longer, can't get faster than 90.  Is there a fix coming, this is getting old.

Ya. I don’t think there will be a solution.

...and just like I am done with all Google hardware! I switched to a Deco X55 and it is much better.

I might have to do that as well

This may be a little late, but I have a preview of google home where I am able to set preferred activities under Nest WiFi settings. I disabled video conferencing check-mark under that setting and my throttling issue got better, I am not sure 100% of the reason behind it but I think that throttling should not be done in any way and it should never be done automatically, instead let users pick if they wish to opt in.

I scrapped my Google Wi-Fi and switched to eero 6+

my speeds have gone from averaging 90mbs to 270mbs

My eero6+ is arriving today. Looking forward to trying it.

I have just given up by now. Will be switching my Google Wifi setup for ANYTHING at this point.

I switched to a pretty cheap TP-Link Deco 5 and now everything just works. Everything in the setup is the same as before except the Google Wifi Gen 1. Can't believe I put up with this for 4 years.

Is this a known to you guys? My baby monitors are struggling, and this is becoming a big issue for my household. I pay for gigabit internet (1000 mbps) and the mesh is throttling it down to 90-97 mbps which causes issues for my baby monitors, streaming services, and personal devices. I don't want to pay another $300 for a mesh system when this was working just fine for the past couple of years. I've tried everything I've come across in this thread as well as Reddit and nothing has worked out. Please offer some approved assistance or an alternative if this cannot be resolved.

Try this:

Google home app, go to wifi, then Network  settings at the bottom, then Preferred Activities, ensure video conferencing is not checked!

Still happening.  Seems to be worse for me when unchecked.
