Google Wifi Gen1 - Only ONE computer on my home network will NOT connect to Internet

PaoloMan89
Community Member

Currently I have 4 computers and 26 "devices" connected to my Google Wifi Home network that consists of the "Main" pod (connected to my Modem from my Internet provider, Spectrum) and 4 additional pods spread around my house (my Goggle Mesh Network).

I am a retired IT guy.

Everything has been running just find until 3 days ago.

Suddenly, my wife's laptop will NOT connect to the Internet using EITHER a hard wired Ethernet cable NOR via Wifi.

I have even moved my wife's laptop into another room where there is a WORKING Ethernet connection (connected to my computer) and the moment we plug it into my wife's laptop, it shows our home network (BigBang) but tells us there is no Internet connection.

I have spend 2 days on the phone with the TechSupport at my wife's company (she works from home 100%) and they insist that after literally hours of diagnostics that the problem is NOT with my wife's laptop.

HELP HELP.....

I'm banging my head on the wall (well not literally) but I am losing my mind over this issue.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Does the laptop have forced VPN when not at the office? Do you run double NAT?

There are previous threads about how a VPN does not manage to connect if behind double NAT.

If theres a VPN, try to find logs which can tell more about what's failing.

Oh, one more thing. If they use Tailscale, I've personally had a problem with DNS and newer clients than v1.10. It seems to try to reach company internal DNS servers, even though Tailscale hasn't connected up yet.

I don't work for Google.

Hi there Paolo,

Sure thing! I'll keep this thread open for three more days so you can take your time. Just tell me if you encounter any difficulties in that way I can provide assistance.

I hope you get well soon.

Kind regards,
Lovely

Lovely,

Thank you for your patience. After several day s of trying all kinds of "testing"/rebooting etc, my patience is worn-thin 🙂

I'm struggling, but will try and keep this SHORT....

First... simple "diagram" of the Google Home network hardware setup.

Spectrum (ISP) modem--->

Google Home "Router" Gen1 ("think I remember naming Home Internet "BigBang" BUT cannot find under.....Google Home App)

Currently has Wifi connection CANNOT get ethernet Internet to connect.

Only "reclaimed" Wifi by carrying Laptop1 to "closet" where Modem and Google Router are. Plugged ethernet directly to connection coming out of Google Router.....

Internet/ethernet works PERFECTLY in CLOSET.....

Lost ethernet Internet today when tried to install NEW Usb port Wifi dongleLost ethernet Internet today after a Modem & Router reboot.

"Reclaimed" ethernet by Unplugging from 4-port switch and directly connected from ethernet "in the wall" of room

Weird "stuff" I just noticed yesterday...

YES....

BigBang no spaces no additional 27 or 27 2

Well, that is the overview....

I "feel" like we are chasing a really weird DHCP (maybe NAT) issue, but I personally don't know EXACTLY where I could somehow "fix" the DHCP or NAT issue using the overly simple Google Home App....

Sorry if this is more confusing than I intended.

I REALLY tired to just present the technical information and not wine or moan about all the different testing scenarios I have tried.... 😕

Happy to supply or try ANYTHING at this point.

My wife (who works from home 100%) and son are ready to revolt.... LOL....

Thank you in advance.

Paolo

Hello PaoloMan89,

Please give the troubleshooting steps below a try and let me know how they go.
1. Make sure that your laptops and computers are updated.
2. Set a static IP for your wife's laptop.
3. If you haven't already, change the Wi-Fi network password
4. Check that your ISP-provided modem/router is in bridge mode.

If the issue persists, fill out this form so our senior specialist team will be able to take over from where we left off.

Regards,
Lovely

Thank you, I will do that.

One question first before I complete your helpful steps though.

The only thing I have not done is a factory reset of the primary Google router (using Google Home app).

Shall I try that first?
Hesitated since I believe I’ll have to re-set up my entire home network. Just wanted to make sure it is worth the effort.

Thanks AGAIN for your help.

Hey there Paolo,

No worries! You can go ahead and factory reset your Google Wifi devices, then set them up to see if that resolves your issue. You can use the same network name and password, so your devices can reconnect to your Wi-Fi once it's available again. If you're still getting the same issue, you can try the steps I provided above.

Thanks,
Lovely

Lovely

Thank you I will try the reset first today and then go on from there, as you recommended.
Thank you

Hi Paolo,

Sounds like a plan! I'll wait for your update then.

Lovely

 Thanks for your patience.
I DID DO a Factory Reset and it solved ALL the wild and varied Internet connection issues with getting various computers connected (Ethernet and WiFi).
WOOHOO !! 2 additional wifi pods are online too.
Unfortunately only about half of my Google speakers (and Feit brand light bulbs) will NOT reconnect no matter what I try. Even placing speaker right next to main Google router in closet.
But…. please note I’m CONVINCE that the Google hardware is just having EOL (end of life) issues. My Google wifi pods are about 9 years old….

Good news is…..

We are going to replace the Google network by upgrading to the Google Nest Wifi 6e router/extenders.
I’m POSITIVE this final step will solve ALL the problems I’m having.
Unfortunately we have to wait for next payday (the 25th).

So I guess this tread is done unless you want to leave it open until I get the new hardware.

Thank you for all your help.
Cheers,

Hello Paolo,

I appreciate you keeping me in the loop. I'm glad to know that factory resetting your Google Wifi devices solved your internet issues. I'll keep your thread open until you upgrade to the Google Nest Wifi Pro. I want to make sure everything is all set on your end.

Kind regards,
Lovely

Sort of fixed.....

Installed Google Nest Pro 6e and 2 “extenders”.
Ungraded from Google Wifi gen 1.

Now can’t get about 1/2 my Google speakers (yes some older ones) to connect to Wifi.
Google Home app finds and says they are installed THEN says they cannot communicate with my iPhone.
Does the Google Nest Pro 6e NOT support the older Google speakers?

HAVE tried all the trouble shooting steps I can find.

Can’t find write up about this issue.

 Thanks in advance.

Hey Paolo,

The Google Home and Nest devices only support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at this time, but they should still be able to connect to your Google Nest Wifi Pro mesh system since it's a tri-band network. With that said, please factory reset your speakers and set them up again. You may try using another phone to configure these devices and see if that helps.

Cheers,
Lovely
