Any device that doesn't transmit its device name and is not renamed in the app will show as "unknown device". These stay in the lists and will automatically delete after 30 days and often will show up on initial connection to the network by some devices. If the devices continue to connect within the 30-day period it will restart the period.

Tips to avoid:

  1. Update to the most recent version of the Google Home app
  2. Turn on New Device notifications (if not already enabled) to alert when an actual new device connects
  3. Make sure MAC randomization isn't enabled in the Google Home Wifi settings or on the devices themselves
  4. Rename known devices if they do not transmit their device name; this is usually due to settings on the device that prevents the name from being sent (Change connected device name )
  5. Make sure you are using a strong password for your network
  6. If you have a guest network set up, make sure it also has a strong password
  7. If you continue to experience the constant "new device has joined..." notifications, identify the device via IP and/or MAC address to ensure it is a known device. If it is a known device, check logs on the device itself to see why it keeps trying to connect in a different way. This could be due to a setting that needs changing, connection issues with the device, etc.
  8. If unknown devices are still connecting to your network and you cannot identify them, change the password

Hope these tips help.

Thanks for the tips, I’m sure someone will benefit from them. Changing to a stronger password won’t help in my case.

The 30 day auto removal does not work. I have over 200 offline unknown devices and several offline named ones which I know about. This issue about removing old dead entries has been around for years. I’m not about the factory reset my whole network, port forwards, static IPs etc. just because of this.

Hi!

None of the advice solved my issue unfortunately. It’s a known issue and Google fails to provide a fix for this basic need. Can’t be hard to implement a way to delete entries in a list. It’s frustrating to the point where I’m actively searching for other ways to provide WiFi in my house. I’m maybe just one guy if millions of users, so I guess me switching to other brand doesn’t means much to Google and their pride in their products.

Hello Rokesby,

Totally understand that doing a factory reset on your network can be frustrating, but these are the most helpful steps to figure out what's going on with your device. Let's give them a try! Update us once you’ve tried doing a factory reset on your network.

Cheers,
Abi

Apparently the only way to remove old unknown devices is to do a factory reset. Google has failed to implement this basic function, been waiting years for this fix. I'm actively looking for other ways/devices to manage my network. Problem can't be solved.

The recommendation is to factory reset, and then wait minimum 30 days after I have a device which never connects again, and then I can report back. Can’t report back if the thread gets closed.
