Mixing WiFi and Ethernet Cabled Devices - Solution

Some time ago I asked for help in setting up a Google WiFi Mesh. I could not find a way of getting devices in the mesh to talk to devices wired to my ISP Router.

Several people, especially MichaelP, encouraged me to try again with everything connected to the Google WiFi router. So I tried that configuration once more and as before found it didn’t allow any better communication between devices. But because of your encouragement I stuck with it and hunted down the problems – device by device. After a week I have now got a Google WiFi Mesh working and all devices talking to each other.

So I can confirm that attaching everything to the Google router does work – but you may need to work on it. You will need to make sure that any static IP addresses will work with your networks address, subnet mask and gateway address. You will also need to do many device restarts to get the DHCP server to allocate a compatible IP address. And then remember that it is not enough to restart PCs; the NIC’s need to be reset to pick up a new IP address from the DHCP server. The Google devices including WiFi bits and the Nest devices will often need to be reset. And the Chromecast TV device will need to be factory reset and you will then lose all your settings for favourite channels etc..

So many things to look at and it might take several days to make the changes, reset things and then test the results of the changes. Make notes as you go else you will forget what you have done, what works and what doesn’t

So thanks everyone.

Hey, Davy123.

This was such a great post. Thank you so much for putting the time into making this and for illustrating so well how it's all working. We'll keep the post archived here and it will remain visible to the community through search. Before I close the thread, however, is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks.

Just to add that after 2 months it has been working faultlessly. The Wi-Fi signal has been excellent all over the house and garden.

Even after a storm which cut off the electricity, when power was restored it came back on automatically and faultlessly.

So Jeff, please feel free to close the thread and I am honoured that you consider it useful enough to add to the archive.

I'm happy to hear it's still working with rock solid results! Thanks again, Davy123. I'll go ahead and close the thread up. Thanks again for the great info!
