Multiple Google Wifi mesh network on 1 modem

DucNguyen

Hi,

I currently have a connection issue with my office network. I have 1 modem from an ISP provider with 2 LAN ports, 5 Google wifi pucks, 2 switches, and 1 TV. I created 2 different homes in the Google Home App and set up 2 different mesh networks connected to 2 different ports in the same modem. The first mesh network works fine at 400 Mbps. The second network is available but slow under 100Mbps, unable to stream high-definition content.

In the Google Home App, a notification said that the connection between the modem and Google wifi 4 has limited speed, which might be the cable. I use a new CAT 6 from UGreen cable. Test with other systems is fine.

I set it up as follows:

Modem -> (LAN Port 1)

Google wifi 1 ->

Set up as Public Network

Switch 1 ->-> Google wifi 2
   -> Google wifi 3
Same Modem -> (LAN Port 2)

Google wifi 4 ->

Set up as Private Network

Switch 2 ->-> Google wifi 5
   -> TV

What should I do next? Should I factory reset the second home call Private Network? Or re-route my network, adding another switch between the modem and the 2 mesh networks?

Thanks.

Hi @DucNguyen,

I understand you're experiencing speed issues with your Google Wifi network setup. It seems you're using two Google Wifi systems with the same modem to create separate public and private networks. While this setup is possible, it can lead to a Double NAT issue, significantly impacting your network performance, especially on the private network.

Additionally, your modem may automatically prioritize the public network due to a higher number of connected devices, further impacting the speed of the private network.

To resolve this issue and potentially increase the speed of your private network, you'll need to work with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Here are two potential solutions:

  1. Prioritize Speed on the Private Network:
    • Contact your ISP and request that they prioritize the speed for the Google Wifi system connected to your private network. This might involve adjusting their network settings or providing a specific service plan.
  2. Separate Internet Connections:
    • Consider getting a second internet connection from a different ISP. This will allow you to have two independent modems, each dedicated to one of your Google Wifi networks. This is the most reliable way to ensure optimal speed for both networks.

Important: Please avoid using a router between your modem and Google Wifi units, as this will also create a Double NAT issue.

I hope this information helps. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, feel free to reply to this thread so we can explore additional solutions for your specific scenario.

Best regards,

Josh.

Hey @DucNguyen .

Adding an ISP router between the modem and the Google Wifi is going to create Double NAT all over again. You need just a modem only device. The setup should be Modem Only > Google Wifi router > points.

I tried to switch the LAN port on the modem, and the LAN cables connected from the modem to Google wifi 4 and to Switch 2, also Factory reset the Private Network and set it up again. Nothing seems to work, still have internet but slow, and unable to stream high-definition content.

Hey @DucNguyen .

I need some additional information before I can assist:

  1. What is the logic behind setting up two separate networks in the same home?
  2. Who is your ISP?
  3. What speeds are you signed up for?
  4. Is the ISP modem a modem only or does it have routing and wifi?
  5. What is the modem make and model?
  6. For the second network, is the "Google Wifi 4" set up as a router or just a bridged point?
  7. When you run the speed tests, are you running them from the Google Home app?

1. I set it up so the guest can use the internet from the public network. And my colleague can use a separate network. For a stable internet connection reason. We have about 70-80 people connected to the public network already. We have 30 employees in my office

2. My ISP is VNPT (from Vietnam)

3. I signed up for a 500Mbps connection

4. ISP modem is a combo with routing and wifi (I turned off the wifi)

5. The modem from the ISP is iGate GW020-H (AC1200 wireless Dual band GPON ONT)

6. The Google wifi 4 set up as a router for a second home/ network

7. I run the speed test using the Google Home app and Speedtest

Also, when I connected to switch 2, the connection between the Google wifi 4 to the switch only got 100Mbps.

Thanks for the info, @DucNguyen .

You stated that the Wifi was disabled on the ISP modem. Is the routing disabled and the modem in Bridge Mode?

The modem is setting as default. Bridge mode is not on. Wifi from the modem is off.

Hey @DucNguyen .

We need to start with the modem before we can move on to anything else. The ISP device needs to be in Bridge Mode as well as wifi being disabled. The speeds you are detecting are indicative with Double NAT. You will need to consult the manual or contact the ISP. Once the ISP gear is in Bridge Mode and wifi turned off, you should be see a difference in the speed tests.

Thank you. I'll ask the ISP for a new hardware. And update the progress.

The ISP will provide a Mikrotik router to put in between the modem and the 2 mesh. How should I configure the modem and the router? Thank you.
And should I try to change the LAN setting on the two different G-wifi mesh to different address?

So during the weekend, I ended up setting all 5 google wifi in public network. I’ll get another internet connection, new set of Google nest pro for the private network. Thanks for your support guys.
