Weak Connection

brownel02
Community Member

I have a split level home of roughly 2700sf.  My nearest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away.  No new services/devices have been added to my house although 1 wall was removed to create a more open concept.  My services come into the basement (power, cable, internet...).

Case 1: For the past 3 years I have had my 1st Google Wifi set up in the basement attached to my router.  My 2nd point is in my dining room (1 room and 1 floor away), 3rd point is in the living room (2 rooms away but within eye sight, no walls).

I started having internet issues about 3 months ago (weak connection, dropped service, tv (in living room) buffering.  All speed tests show 450+Mbps and all connecting lines are CAT6.  I followed these instructions (they have been given multiple times on this forum):

*Do a full power cycle of the network - this will allow the entire network to re-establish connections. Here's how to do it properly.
  • Disconnect the power cable and Ethernet cable from the Google Nest Wifi router.
  • Disconnect the power cables from the other Wifi points.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the modem.
  • Allow the power to stay disconnected from all for 5 minutes.
  • Connect the power back to the modem only and wait for it to fully boot back up.
  • All lights should be lit up before moving to the next step.
  • After the modem is back online, connect the Ethernet cable to back to the Google Nest Wifi router's WAN port (globe symbol).
  • Connect the power cable back to Google Nest Wifi router and to other Wifi points.
  • Allow the all Wifi points to be fully back on.

These instructions made no difference to the signal quality, still showing as Weak on both of my wifi points.

Case 2: I moved my Main Google Wifi to the 1st floor running new CAT6 back to my router (30').  My 2nd wifi spot is now in the living room (eye sight to the main Google wifi modem) but the signal still shows as a Weak connection. No 3rd wifi puck is currently installed.

Any help on getting my service back to stable before I ditch these pucks?

Thanks

Please dont close. As explained before I cant try out your fix for another week.

Has anyone else tried the fix from Mel?

Mel,

Please post again your suggestions for improving connection. I'll give it one more try before replacing them. Thank you.

The only acceptable fix to this is a software update that addresses the problem. It’s clearly a widespread problem and not just one or two people. Standing on your head, doing flips, and jumping through silly hoops is not a fix. This is just not acceptable for a product from this large of a company. I’d expect this from some new unknown company that none of us has heard from.

Hi Friedham,

Have you had the chance to try the steps above? If so, how was it?

Best,

Mel

Mel,

After following your instructions it seems that disabling the IPV6 has improved the system but not fixed it.

Same issue. last 6 months or so wifi points frequently show weak connection, or just disconnect altogether. Problem has gotten worse since google has come out with new gen wifi devices in their stores

Hi Tanoli8,

Have you been able to try the steps staghornleghorn shared? Did it have any impact on your situation? If you've tried that and are still seeing the same things, let us know.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi again, Tanoli8,

I just wanted to follow up once more to see if you tried those steps and if you saw any progress.

Thanks,

Jeff

Yes I have. One can only hard reset and plug-unplug so many times. It just doesn't work

I factory reset and narrowed down one point to be the issue. I renamed that point and my issue has been resolved. Give that a try!

Hey folks,

@staghornleghorn, thanks for sharing the step that helped your issue.

@Tanoli8, I suggest trying the step above.

Best,

Mel

Thank you. tried and failed. You see.. nothing changed from the time it used to work to the time it started dropping connection or weak connection. Everything is in the exact same spot. If anything I moved one of the points closer. I am wondering if this is happening to push folks to buy the new nest devices?

Since my last post on 3/29/22 I am happy to report that I have not had an issue with my WIFI in over 6 months.  I think the solution that finally worked for me was to ditch the Nest system and buy a Deco!  😂  Yup, no issues in over 6 months. Anyone want to buy a Nest system?

Started looking into deco after seeing your post and it's starting to look more and more appealing..might be time to leave Google brand loyalty behind..it's like leaving a bum lazy partner who puts no effort in a relationship... sometimes you just gotta take that big step and say No More !!!

Thanks.  Just bought a deco xe75 now and going to get rid of the nest wifi immediately.  I am sick of this frustration.  It stinks since everything I have is in the nest/google environment but this horrible "weak connection" stuff is ridiculous.

That's exactly what I did. Now two of my 3 Chromecast won't connect, keeps saying I'm entering the wrong password for wifi, even though it's the same password I used to connect everything else. And my Nest Home Hub won't stay connected. I'm getting rid of all my Google devices, there's absolutely no support. Started replacing them with Alexa and Firestick and really wish I had done it sooner. Didn't realize how much better they are.

I have exactly the same issues, started about 6 weeks ago. Have Google put out and update that is compounding the original issues?

I am reading this and doing the same.  Just purchases the Deco!

Nest wifi running great for 2 years, like others on forum recently have weak or offline connection and no changes to system or access location. Reset fixes temporarily at best. Google needs to step up and address.

I had the exact same issue and I found out that when i turned off the chromecast in my bedroom the connections went back to very strong. I tried a couple of times to turn it on and off and it was - and still is - consistently weakening the google wifi signal when it is on!

Thanks for tip Jesper2. I did a full factory reset this week and improved immediately though yesterday was back to under 5 mps wifi when I typically have 200+. I disconnected chrome cast and happy to share wifi strength (for now) seems to be back. It was strange as wifi points kept going offline or weak connection, removed chrome cast and points are now good or great connection. Could chrome cast do that much damage to mesh (fyi.. while it is plugged in I rarely use it). Thanks again

Google: What are you suggesting we should do? My 500 euro 3-pack Pro system is useless. Can not be set up, and when I do a bunch of user created workarounds I might get far enough to get "out of range" or "weak signal" even when the pucks are 10 inches from the router. Router works great. Additional pucks: garbage.
So again: what do you suggest we do now??

So is google going to fix this? I’ve jumped through all of the hoops…. I have one point that shows weak. Other 2 are fine. The simplest resolution seems to be buying a new system. I only bought this a year ago. All of the replies I’ve seen from google suck. Can you please find a fix for this?

I recently updated from Google Wifi to Nest Wifi. I put the router and the points all in the exact spots that I had the old Google Wifi points. Everything says "weak connection". I had "great connection" with the Google Wifi in the exact same spots. I experimented by moving one point 15 feet from the router with no obstacles in-between. It still read's weak connection. It almost seems like the only possible outcome in the Home App is "weak connection".

Just wait until the Google nest licks all of your machines off the network and decides that your password is incorrect even though it has never been changed. ITS A PILE IF **bleep**E SOLD AS A POLISHED TURD AND TWICE THE PRICE. …. NOTE THE CAPS… WE HAVE BEEN SOLD A CROCK OF **bleep**E

I'm done with it.  I've tried to be patient.  But they've done nothing to fix it.  I liked the idea of a mesh system but it hasn't panned out.  Looking at reviews, all mesh systems seem to fight the same issue.  Time to switch to a non-mesh system.  By the start of next year, I'll be dumping Google.

Wow, came here because I am having the same problem, but I see the typical Google support here, which is none. I been a loyal google addict for many year, but I'm now realizing that Google doesn't provide any support and doesn't care about their customers. I've purchased my last Google product.

I have weak connection problems DAILY, to the point that my internet is unusable. Having tried all the solutions suggested here (and by Google) to no avail, my only solution is to unplug my Google Point, then the signal becomes much stronger and the internet is usable again. Of course this means that there is literally no "point" to buying the Google mesh WiFi network devices.

I have only found 1 solution that has helped me so far. My home is wired with ethernet in every room. I was able to connect an ethernet cable to my router downstairs to another Nest ethernet router in my office upstairs. I run an ethernet cable out of my office router directly into my computer. I now get 600mps on mu computer when I run speed test. I have a 3300 SQFT home. I am running 3 Nest routers and 2 Nest points. Interestingly, now that I have wired my main router downstairs to my office router all points now show "good connection". This has made an impact on the wireless devices as well. In fact, although not perfect, this one change has made a massive difference in the stability of the wifi. I now get over 100mps on my cell phone throughout the house. Also, my video streaming services are much better. That being said, it is still not ideal to run an ethernet cable to connect multiple routers together...... I know this will be challenging for many people to run the cables and somewhat defeats the purpose of a "mesh" network.

Running hard wires...although it works.. isn't really much of a solution tho is it? I mean it's supposed to me a WiFi mesh system..also 2nd gen pucks don't done Ethernet ports..which was another stupid step by Google. I am seriously looking into getting a tplink xe75 and just selling my nest on ebay

I have been experiencing the same issues described here for months, and just now found this post.  I had great wifi for a long time, then about 6 months ago, connections between access points would randomly go weak and wifi was unusable.  I have been dealing with Google support for about 2 months...

I think I have tried most of the suggested steps above (restarting network, factory reset network, turn off IPV6, change DNS settings, deleted and renamed each access point, etc.).  All of these steps seem to have a temporary effect; I would get great/good connections for about 2 to 3 weeks, then all of the sudden weak connections on my access points and my wifi becomes unusable, and have to restart or reset again...  Very frustrated. I'm really hopeful that there will be a real fix, but I can't keep restarting/resetting everything every 2 to 3 weeks.  I have no confidence in Google Nest Wifi.

I’m so glad I came upon this! I thought I was going crazy! I’ve lived in the same place for almost three years and have always been all green great connection between my points. I have made no changes at all and now all of the sudden I’m getting a weak connection! I tried moving them around and doing the power recycle and it doesn’t help!

I bought two more Google Nest Wifi Routers, AC2200 Mesh Routers, and that has helped.  I have noticed that the router is hot when it is not working well, and room temp when it is working well.  So it seems like it is just some internal malfunction.  Maybe they just go bad over time?

I have 6 of these babies in a 3500sq ft house.  no matter where i move them i get at least 3 week connections. I guess i got suckered.

Was there ever a fix for this? I just started having the same issue in the past couple of weeks. My signals were all very strong and out of nowhere I'm getting weak signals and randomly access points are going offline. I went from having a great signal to nothing. My internet speeds are great, it's just the Wi-Fi signal coming from the next Wi-Fi.

dont think so, i gave up on google wifi, bought 3 Eero and very happy with.  those google wifi are just for my kid to ask google for time and simple math questions now.

It's ridiculous that after a couple of years in this many complaints, Google hasn't done anything to address the issue. Incredibly disappointing
