Weak Connection

brownel02

I have a split level home of roughly 2700sf.  My nearest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away.  No new services/devices have been added to my house although 1 wall was removed to create a more open concept.  My services come into the basement (power, cable, internet...).

Case 1: For the past 3 years I have had my 1st Google Wifi set up in the basement attached to my router.  My 2nd point is in my dining room (1 room and 1 floor away), 3rd point is in the living room (2 rooms away but within eye sight, no walls).

I started having internet issues about 3 months ago (weak connection, dropped service, tv (in living room) buffering.  All speed tests show 450+Mbps and all connecting lines are CAT6.  I followed these instructions (they have been given multiple times on this forum):

*Do a full power cycle of the network - this will allow the entire network to re-establish connections. Here's how to do it properly.
  • Disconnect the power cable and Ethernet cable from the Google Nest Wifi router.
  • Disconnect the power cables from the other Wifi points.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the modem.
  • Allow the power to stay disconnected from all for 5 minutes.
  • Connect the power back to the modem only and wait for it to fully boot back up.
  • All lights should be lit up before moving to the next step.
  • After the modem is back online, connect the Ethernet cable to back to the Google Nest Wifi router's WAN port (globe symbol).
  • Connect the power cable back to Google Nest Wifi router and to other Wifi points.
  • Allow the all Wifi points to be fully back on.

These instructions made no difference to the signal quality, still showing as Weak on both of my wifi points.

Case 2: I moved my Main Google Wifi to the 1st floor running new CAT6 back to my router (30').  My 2nd wifi spot is now in the living room (eye sight to the main Google wifi modem) but the signal still shows as a Weak connection. No 3rd wifi puck is currently installed.

Any help on getting my service back to stable before I ditch these pucks?

Thanks

I switched out completely from google wifi pucks to google nest, one upstairs and one down. I have google fiber, so no modem to make adjustments on. I switched off the setttings people recommended on here, and it's been marginally better, but still dropping connection at least once a day. It's like it can't handle more than 5 devices being connected. Once you get up towards 10+ it just really struggles. and I'm not talking about everything being active, just connected (like smart thermostat, echo, smart plugs, etc). I hardwired in my husbands ps5 which helped some, but again, if my daughter and I are both trying to do something on the internet it stops working.

So when is it reasonable to put this product on blast? I'm talking one star reviews on Amazon, Twitter, Google Store, etc., wherever these products are sold and reviewed? I'm not interested in Google making space for users to discuss how the product failed but rather I'm more interested in what Google is doing to rectify the situation, including issuing a refund.

Same problem... Something has recently changed and now all my nest wifi points are showing as weak. I live in a rural area. No other channels are affecting. No new furniture. I think just bad firmware?!?!

Pls revise this Google!

I recommend giving up. I got an ASUS - RT-AX82U AX5400 and it is 1000x better! I wish google would get their act together, but until they do I'd much rather get the speed out of my fiber connection that keep messing around with products that don't work.

Question is, are the Google Wifi meshes juts reporting weak connections but performing well OR are they reporting weak signals AND performing poorly?

Does the ASUS have mesh? I have the Google Wifi with 2 other points since my home is large - will the ASUS be strong enough AND also connect correctly with Google Nest cameras and devices, etc?

I tried the Netgear ORBI and that was terrible - it never connected to the devices consistently

Reporting weak connections AND performing poorly.

Both.  Currently, mine behaves for a couple of days and then grinds to a halt and I have to reset both the network and also the closest puck.

I was able to get the google mesh to report strong connections, but if I connected more that 10 devices to the system performance would crash, and even with less than that speeds would not stay stead for more than a minute or so. I think you can add mesh to the ASUS, but not 100% on that. But really anything has got to be better. My home is about 1700 sq ft with two floors and I can get 100+mps throughout with the asus (which never happened with nest even before it started to get bad). I've had no connection issues with any of my smart home features, ps5, my work computer, echo, etc.

Do you mind please listing your devices and setup? Do you have multiple nest devices? Do you only have one router device and where is it in relation to devices?

I have 7 nest games, 4 nest locks, and over 125 hue lights

Thanks

So I've pretty much lost my patience.

Google/Nest is not known for having garbage developers, but this has been a system breaking problem since at least October, and likely earlier than that with no fix. I'm convinced that they either aren't really looking to fix it because of a planned system end-of-life, or it's something they *can't* fix and are just waiting it out. I've spent over $350 on this system and it's complete trash. I don't understand why this isn't being communicated to the vendors and refunds aren't being offered.

Unhappy with Google nest. They simply won’t go through a wall and these are only internal single skin walls. I walk from my kitchen to my garage, good signal to none. Why doesn’t it auto switch from 5 to 2.4… lots of money for a poor product

I’m convinced at this point it’s something to do with changing firmware to be compatible with the Home app instead of its own WiFi app. My points were perfect until a couple months ago. They all still show good connection but the entire network slows too near nothing, and I have to restart the whole network via the app and wait a few minutes, then everything works again. But only for a day or two then I have to repeat.

Another frustrated Google wifi user. I had 3 APs and they were struggling to connect through walls, so I added 3 more and placed them strategically throughout my 3699sf house. Now, all but the main router is shooting west and my devices are having performance issues. This has been going on several months.

I just submitted a product return.  What a pity but I just can't waste any more time on this whack doodle product.  Super disappointed.

Looking for suggestions for alternatives?

How do you submit a product return? What is return window?

Thanks for all the replies. It’s very maddening. Has anyone changed to something that works better? Nothing worse than being in a meeting with my VP on teams and the effing internet sucking.

Have the google Community Specialists / Experts just stopped reading this thread?

My story is the same as many others; Google wifi router with 4 pucks (5 total); worked great for 2.5 years; just recently started with weak connection on the mesh test and very slow device speeds.

I did the full reset, deleted my Home in the app, created a brand new wifi network (which was a huge pain) and it was ok for a couple of days and then this afternoon it ground to a halt again.

This has gone on for months; nothing official has been released from Google, no timeline for a fix.  WTF?? I'm going to buy another mesh system tomorrow.

Appalling from Google.

Having the same issues here all of the sudden. Any solutions???

Another router?  I went to TP-Link Archer AX21 as a temporary fix, but I feel now it has become permanent.  My only hope is that Google fixes these so I can sell them on eBay.

Same issues here. Have 3 points. Ones across the house are having weak signals and had been performing perfectly for about a year until recently. I hope they can refund me the money i spent on these. I should have known not to use Google products. Almost completely forgot they practically have no support number when my relative locked their android phone and we couldn't reset because of Google

I went eeros as I’m an apple person anyway. Much better. Screw google.

I’m an apple guy too.  Amazon bought Eero, which is also what I will switch to.  Apple currently has the Linksys Velop system in the apple store, but unfortunately it’s a physically large vicious assault on my eyes.

Hi, everyone.

Just as an update, there's a new firmware rolling out now to all WiFi devices. Some of you might have already received it, while most of you will see it hitting your devices in the next little while. You don't need to do anything to get the update as it will download and install on its own. If you see any changes in your situation after receiving the update, please let us know. Hopefully this prove to be the fix you're all looking for.

Thanks.

How can we check to see if we have the version with the fix?

Malycto

What are the version numbers for the router and access points? How will we know if we have the new firmware?

I am still having the same issue now on 12/26/2022 so the fix did not work at all.

Google seems not to care about their product because Google has not responded to the issue with their Nest WiFi going offline but for the rest of us it a constant 48 hrs. restart the Nest WiFi network so the Nest WiFi points have a Great Connection

But after 2 days it is same problem

Simple fix: trash it. Get eero.

Add new to your list of problems. I have 3 points inside a 2 story house, one on each floor with modem connection in the basement. One point located in a remote shed always gas a weak signal but it works for most things. The system worked well most if the time, but now it's showing weak signal on most points. 2nd floor connects to basement weak, but 1st floor shows as weak, even though it is almost directly above the modem/point. I have a 3 day Zoom seminar starting in the morning and am dreading the possibility my wifi won't work. Maybe it's time to find something new. Hate to toss these- they were expensive!

Add me to the list. Since November I've had tons of drops and nothing I do fixes them. I've had mine for nearly 2 years with no issues. I even put them 10 feet away from each other but my router and point show weak connection. Maybe this is why my brother sold his...

I have 6 points basically one in every room and even upgraded to the newest points and still have weak connection on every point.

Sounds like you got too many. More does not neccessarily equal better.

I don't work for Google.

This is all shameful, I am also having the same problem and no solution.  Done with Google and nest as they don't care that their products are defective.

Clutch

Everyone here has the same problem but maybe I have too many? Lol come on. I know you're the expert but it doesn't take much to see that this is a extremely defective product. And the reason I bought more was because they weren't working. So please spare me and everyone here the b.s.
