WiFi device dropping LAN connection through switch

kaledev

I have an odd problem that I can't figure out and wanted to see if anyone else has it. I noticed frequent dropping through only my hardwired LAN connection (not WiFi). The only commonality here is that the connections dropped were being routed through an unmanaged switch. The only way to re-connect is to cut power to the switch and unplug/replug the ethernet cable to the switch from the Google WiFi device. The first thing I tried was to replace all cabling (that didn't work). Then I tried to replace with a new switch, completely different model and different manufacturer (same exact problem occurs). I'm out of ideas here, but it HAS to be the Google WiFi device - it seems incredibly unlikely to be anything else. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have 2 Trendnet unmanaged switches on my network between a Google Wifi and an access point and haven't had any drop issues on the same Gen 1 devices, hardwired or wireless. Below is my setup if it helps:

  • Modem hardwired to main Google Wifi
  • Google Wifi out hardwired to Port #1 on first switch
  • Last port on first switch hardwired to Port #1 on second switch
  • Last port on second switch hardwired to 2nd Google Wifi (AP)

Other than WPA3, IPv6, and assigned device IPs, the Google Wifi main is set up basically factory.

Hey folks,

We appreciate your help here, @PatrickP_Viking.

Any updates on this? I'm having the same issue with ethernet connections dropping through an unmanaged TP-Link switch.

I never figured it out, I switched companies for mesh systems and left Google behind. No issues anymore.

Hey kaledev,

I'm sorry to see that you returned your Nest WiFi system, but I understand why you made that decision. As you have chosen to go with a different product, I did want to check in and see if there was anything else I could do for you at this time. If there's more I can do, let me know.

Thanks,

Jeff

For me no, but I think  'seedoubleyou' above is still having problems - I was just responding to them.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification, kaledev.

Hey seedoubleyou, are you still seeing the same issues as before? Have you tried any additional troubleshooting, and if so, have you seen any changes at all as a result? Let me know where things stand and I'll be happy to jump in and start helping.

Thanks,
Jeff
