WiFi icon disappearing on Google Home app

ben1760
Community Member

Just wanted to make sure the issue of the wifi icon and the testing of the Google wifi network is still being investigated.  For some reason I lost the wifi icon in Google Home and I have no way to test the network or see what devices are on my network.  I currently am experiencing network instability and I have a several Google wifi points and 1 Google Nest router.

I will try to reset all of them to see if that would affect Google Home.  But apparently the problem of the wifi icon disappearing in Google Home is still an issue.

I've never heard about nor encountered this issue. Please share how it goes after resetting the devices (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6246619?hl=en) and setting them up from scratch (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9548301?hl=en). 🙂

What exact Nest Wifi device(s) do you have? Do you run anything out of the ordinary, like bridge mode, custom DNS, managed switches, PiHole/ DNS sink hole etc.?

I don't work for Google.

It goes the same way it was: no WIFI icon on the Home app.
I removed and reinstalled the Home app twice.
I did a hard reset on the fiber access point (power off/ power on)
I chatted with support, they say the fiber is ok, no issues with the account
Simply the WIFI icon won't show up.

Olavrb, Jeff,

I am using 1 Nest Router, 1 Nest Wi-Fi point and 5 Google Wi-Fi points.  Not running anything special.  I reset all the devices and established a new network using the Google Home app.  So far it looks good but it only has been running for an hour or so.

I don’t know why Google Home completely lost visibility to the network, and once lost, I was not able to get the app to find it, however the network was still running but slightly unstable.

anyway, hoping it will hold out.

Thanks for the update, ben1760.

Hopefully things are sorted out, but if anything goes wrong, just let us know. The instability is frustrating, so keep an eye on that as well.

Thanks.

Hey, dpetersonct.

Sorry you're having the same issues. Do you mind letting me know whether you're using the iOS or Android version of the Home app?

Thanks.

Ok, thanks for the added info, dpeterseonct.

There has been a bug affecting the iOS Home app, and a fix is being worked on now. I don't know for sure yet if you're seeing the same issue, but that's a possibility. One thing you can try as well is to toggle your cloud services through the Home app. The steps for that are below.

Open the Google Home app.

  1. Tap the WiFi icon.

  2. Tap Settings.

  3. Select Privacy settings.

  4. Toggle Nest WiFi cloud services OFF and wait for 30 seconds, then back ON.

Once done, close the Home app and perform a full network restart to ensure that the new settings are in place. To do this, I would recommend doing a power cycle on your network.

  1. Disconnect the power adapter and the Ethernet cable from the Nest WiFi router.

  2. Disconnect the power adapter from the Nest WiFi points.

  3. Disconnect the power adapter from the modem. Allow all devices to stay disconnected from the power for 5 minutes.

  4. Connect the power back to the modem only and wait for it to fully back up. All lights should be lit up before moving to the next step.

  5. After the modem is back online, connect the Ethernet cable back to Nest WiFi router's WAN port (globe symbol port).

  6. Connect the power back to the Nest WiFi router and to the Nest WiFi points. Wait until they're all fully back on.

If that doesn't clear things up, let me know and we can look at additional steps. Thanks.

Open the Google Home app.

  1. Tap the WiFi icon.

How does one tap the WiFi icon when it no longer displays in the Home app?

Did you get a response to this? I have the same issue.

I was able to get support by contacting google directly and they were able to correct the problem.  Fortunately in my case, my wife was also an administrator on the google WiFi in "Home" and for whatever reason, she still had the icon and was recorded in google's systems, so working with the both of us, they were able to add me back in and all has been working well since.  It was a very frustrating experience though and clearly the root cause of the issue hasn't been found given the number of people still impacted.  Good luck!!

Hey, dpetersonct.

Just a quick follow up to see if you were able to try the cloud services reset and if it had any impact.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,  thanks for your note. I tried it once with no success.  I was going to try to go through the sequence again before I report back.  Thanks again. I'll let you know.

Hey Allen1.

Do you still have access to your older device after upgrading? Could you sign into the Home app on the older device to see if it displays settings properly?

Allen1

No it was a pixel 4 that i traded in on the 6 pro.  Also like I read somewhere else my nest point shows up as a device and the wifi seems to be working

Allen1

i tried reinstalling home on pixel pro and an older phone both the same, still not there

Hey, Allen1.

With your level of troubleshooting, we can definitely see it's not an issue specific to the device running the Home app. I'm still waiting for more info on that, but it definitely feels like a crazy situation as it's jumping from device to device.

Just a quick check in once more. I still don't have a time frame for a fix, but if anything has changed on your end, please feel free to update us here.

Hey, Ttowns.

Have you tried installing the January update on your Pixel 6 Pro to see if it has any impact? The newest update addresses that issue directly. Let me know if you have tried that and are still seeing the same issues.

Thanks.

Allen1

yes got the update and still the same

Ok, Allen1, so we can definitely rule out the Pixel update as being the factor here. I'll keep looking into things and see what I can return back with.

Thanks.

Hi folks,

I have the same issue.  I have 2 separate lcoations where I operate in each location 3 Google Mesh routers.  When I setup the 2nd location, which is in a different state so no where close to the first location, everything worked fine.  When I went back to the first location, the wifi icon had disappeared off the screen.  I see Media, Broadcast, Routines and Settings.  The wifi icon is definitely missing and I can't run speed tests, check network functionality, etc.  Just wanted to let you know and I'm open to suggestions.  Thank you.

It happened to me also ,I think it started when I went to 12 or after I got pixel 6 pro

I have been having issues similar to dpetersonct. Except, I have only one location. I think my issue started after the recent December software updates Pixel $a 5G. The wifi icon is missing and I can't run speed tests, check network functionality. I factory-reset Google wifi device. Now, Google Home App won't even detect the device! My internet connection is fine - near my isp modem/router.

I have the same problem..I have a Nest Wifi router with 2x wifi points. The wifi itself is up and running and is performing at a reasonable speed. I am using a Pixel 5 and I am on Android 12.
The wifi icon on the Home app disappeared and some of the apps cannot startup when I move from one room to another and I cannot run the mesh test. Some apps (especially Tesla) does not open up (just freezes) when I move from one room to the other. If I go to airplane mode and come back on the app performs fine. When I go back to my old wifi router all apps perform fine. any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem.

I too am having this problem. I have one router, no other access points. It worked fine for years with my pixel 3a. Then two months after I upgraded to the 6pro, this happens. I did not install the Dec update that caused some problems. Nothing works!!!

And also about a month ago, two other homes that were setup also disappeared as well as a light bulb that I can't get reconnected!!?

I have the same issue. I have one Nest router, one Nest Point and three WiFi points. Everything works but network disappeared from the app and no WiFi Button so cannot add new devices or troubleshooting network. It disappeared a few weeks ago and restarting the network or reinstalling the app didn't solve the problem. when looking at devices available, only the Nest Point is available

Same problem here.

The only solution I found was to reset everything to factory and configure again. Everything returned to normal and all functions active again.
I still think this should have a backup of the house, but whatever.

Definetly, not an acceptable "solution"

malaykeshav

I am having the same issue.

The Google Home App does not display the Wifi icon. I cannot manage the network anymore.

I do not want to factory reset or disrupt the network in any way trying to fix this issue. My internet is working fine.

I am on App Version: 2.47.111

iOS software version: 15.3
