Wired / Wireless Upload speeds capped at 100mbps? ATT Fiber

I have gigabit internet through att fiber and just bought a google nest wifi 2 pack a week ago. Setup was a breeze and everything looked good until I noticed my upload speeds were capped at 100mbps on every device behind the nest. Google advised a replacement so I did just that. Everything looked perfect for a day - i was getting expected speeds for wired at 800mbps and wireless was around 300 - 400mbps up and down. I check today - same issue as before where all devices are getting great download speeds but capped at 100mbps upload. I found out, however, that if I select a device as priority in google home, that device now works as I expect. Its like the nest is throttling every device in my network for some reason unless i say otherwise. The priority settings fixes both wired and wireless settings. Im pretty sure the problem must be on the Google side since that change fixes the issue. If I could prioritize all devices 24 hours a day, I would be happy with that workaround 🙂

For reference the setup is

ATT ONT --- ATT Router (bypass mode) --- Google Wifi

Wifi has been disabled on the ATT router and that router is now simply forwarding all traffic to the google nest. I put in a ticket with google who requested I put the router in bypass mode and force DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, These changes made no difference. They then requested logs and are reviewing the files I sent them via the home app and will get back to me. During testing, they told me not to prioritize a device but thats the only way things work as they should. Im seriously considering returning the nest wifi but wanted to hear if anyone else had issues like this. Again, two different nest routers having the exact same issue.

I put in a ticket with ATT who said there should be nothing on their end throttling the traffic. If I plug my computer into the same att router port as the google wifi (move the nest off the port, then replace with my computer), the computer links up at a gig and the speeds look fine.

Hi Jeff, I have a similar issue to all the others posted here, can you post the link to the new main thread where you're gathering all these issues?

Is it yet fixed?

I have just brought your equipment and router speeds 500 while access ponit is 40 at least... why it still happen? I have no solution...

Is there a.fix for this yet. I consistently get near gig speeds when connected direct but Google mesh never hits more than 175. This mesh sucks. How can you keep selling this and not fix it?

where is the other thread? and is there an answer to the problem?

The only answer anyone has ever come up with is to buy something else.  Google isn't fixing this.

I have similar issue. Posting here to find an update when available.
Trying to move from Orbi mesh systems to Google Wifi. My FIOS is at 500/500 mbps.
Orbi provides upto 400mbps wifi and upto 500 in ethernet.
Google wifi provides upto 100 mbps both wifi and ethernet.
Cables are same. Route sequence is same. FIOS modem -> Orbi - PC / FIOS model -> Google wifi -> PC
My devices are from Costco... about couple months old. I was trying to move away from Orbi because of 2 reasons.
1. It drops the video calls over wifi intermittently. Netgear has a thread and solution... but nothing worked for me.
2. I wanted the family sharing/schedule routine in google home app.

Just bought a 2 x Nest Wifi Router pack on Amazon as our first mesh system, and we are hitting this same issue immediately.  Through our ISP we have 400mbps download and 100mbps upload.  In the Google Home app, if I run the speedtest, I get exactly those numbers (last run I got 391mbps down and 102 up).  If I connect to the ethernet port of the main Nest Wifi Router, I also get those speedy numbers.

However, if I connect to Wifi on my Phone, setting my phone right next to the main router, I get around 300mbps down (a decent number) and only 1.5mbps up (a horrible number).  This makes wifi almost useless for anything requiring uploads  ☹️  It's extremely frustrating, impacts all devices connected via wifi, and making me debate on returning this new Nest Wifi system & going back to my 3 year old Asus router (which was not as fast of a download, but at least gave reasonable upload speeds)

Replying to myself with an update.  Strangely, this upload issue is no longer affecting all my devices...just *some*. I've made zero changes to the network since Tuesday (my last message above).

Retested today, and my iPad is getting 100mbps upload speeds suddenly.  But, my iPhone (sitting next to the iPad) only gets <1mbsp uploads  (retested each several times & the speeds remain this lopsided across several tests).  The behavior is unclear and almost random, as I've done nothing different on my iPad vs my iPhone & no special settings in Google Home to prioritize either one. They are sitting next to each other during speed tests, so distance to router has no impact.  Download speeds for each device are nearly identical (>300mbps for each)...it's only the upload speeds that are impacted.

Overall though, I agree with everyone here this is really really frustrating, and I'm surprised that there seems to be no fix/workaround, even though reports of this behavior started over a month ago.  It's not a good way to keep customers.

Well, my issue is downloading, not uploading.  My Xfinity upload account is only 20 up but 800 down and I'm throttled DL at around 100 on all devices.

I’ve had some success over the last few days getting higher upload speeds for my Nest Wi-Fi router. I’m not exactly sure what changed the behavior or if it’ll turn out to be temporary. But I have my DNS settings customized to use 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Then,  I ran a Ookla speed test from my main devices. Any that had slow upload speed, I rebooted (the device not the router). My main devices (phone, iPad, laptop) all have now had a speedier (80-90mbsp when I have 100 max) upload connection for more than 24 hrs.

No idea if this will help anyone else or even if it’ll go back to slow later today or tomorrow.

And, it's reverted to super-slow uploads as of today (<1mbps).  Restarting the device has no impact now.  I thought maybe I had figured out some way to get this working, but no such luck. 😞

about 2 weeks ago I noticed severe lag while working from home, with speed tests reflecting what I was experiencing e.g. 30-40 MBPS when should be +200 download.  Contacted my ISP (comcast/xfinity) who came onsite to troubleshoot.  Signal going to my router was exactly what it should be, as was the speed coming from my router ONLY when tested with an ethernet cable.  The speed coming from the router over WiFi is still horrible.  Can someone advise what google is planning on, or if the latest firmware update can be rolled back until fixed?  It sounds like it's severely impacting multiple customers ability to work from home.  Thank you~

I have xfinity 600Mb service, New Google Mesh wifi, Internet test always comes back full speed, wifi never exceeds 100 on many devices at different points. Apparently this is a well know problem with no real solutions?

Hey, steelgtr.

Sorry for the speed issues you're seeing on your WiFi network. Yes, it's a known issue that's being looked at internally right now. I imagine it's been frustrating for you.

As this is part of a larger problem that we're tracking, I'm going to merge your message into that main thread so it's easier for you to keep up with updates on the matter.

Thanks.

Thanks, Jeff

I just wanted to be clear that my issue is with the original Google mesh (not Nest) and that wifi downloads not uploads are my issue unlike the OP here?

Thx

Same here. Upgraded Comcast plan to 800 mbps down (from 100 down) and my mesh wifi network - still caps out at speeds of ~100 mbps down (130 and <100). Whatever is going on - it appears that gwifi doesn't seem to go much beyond 100 down on the mesh. My set up - gwifi router - nest wifi router and gwifi router as points. Router on middle floor and points on the other 2 floors (within the nw). Had to set it up this way because nest wifi didn't integrate well with gwifi for me. Much better speeds and fewer problems with the nest router as point. Whatever is going on with the speed issues - Google needs to fix this fast ...otherwise long time users like me are getting ready to walk away from the product. Please help!

Sorry to keep whining but now I'm down to 30-50Mb wifi in the same room on an 800Mb connection.

Has a solution been found yet? I am having the same issues as other describe in this thread.

I just bought and installed these units and they are still Crap at 90mbps its 6/2022. IS it still an internal issue that has yet to be fixed... I am returning them this week for my money back and posting a warning with bad reviews to any forum I can find... Also tech support has not responded for over 14 hours and I have  3 open cases with no responses.

OT, but how do I sort this thread to shoe latest first?

I agree. It's hard to follow this thread because of a lack of sequential posts.

Options, sort by "newest".

I have 205mb connection.  When I connect directly to the Modem I can get 205mb no problem.  The google Wifi will only give me a max of 86mb in its speed test.  Putting the modem back into router mode I can get 205mb between router and Wi-Fi.   This is the original Google Wi-Fi puck.   I have tried manually setting the DNS to 8.8.8.8 as well as multiple Enet cables with no difference.

I've had the Google Wifi for over 2 years, but previously only had a 68Mb connection so didn't have an issue.

I have a Google Nest Wifi router (AC2200 4x4 Mu-MIMO) with one wifi point (AC1200 2X2).  I have 1gig coming into the house. I test at 850mbps to 950mbps when hardwired from Nest Wifi router to MacBook Air M1.  Using Apple iPhone 12, I test at approx 800mbps download standing next to the router.   At the Wifi point, however, I never test more than approx 185mbps download on either iPhone 12. On my MacBook Air M1 testing shows approx 95mbps to 130mbps. Both tests are run standing next to the Wifi Point.  Running mess test says that I have a "Great Connection" between the Nest Wifi Router and the Wifi Point.  I am using the "Speed Test" app and browser to check speed.  I have rebooted and factory reset the Wifi point with no change.  Should my speeds from the Wifi Point be so low compared with the speeds I receive when testing next to the router?  Can anyone give some answers/help?

Thanks!!!

I have the same issue. When my phone is connected to the main Nest Wifi Router, I get my full internet speed (~500Mbps). If I move to the other side of the house and make sure my phone connects to the Nest Wifi Point, I only get around ~150Mbps, despite a "Great" mesh connection, and Great connection between phone and wifi point. Same question as OP, is the Wifi Point supposed to be so much slower than the main router?

Hey, Irossga and Rico1.

Sorry for the issues you're having with your inconsistent speeds on your network. I realize that can be quite confusing and frustrating. This is actually part of a larger issue that we're tracking now, however. I'm going to go ahead and merge this conversation in with that larger thread so you can more easily see updates.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff - when will this throttling issue be fixed?? I have fiber but my devices run at 100 mbps or less. it’s ridiculous. i have 4 best wifi units - one router and 3 points. they test as “good connection” but my devices are getting only 10% if the speed coming into my house. this product is infuriating.

The only fix is to ditch this POS system and get something else that actually works.

Could not agree more. I ended up getting Deco 6e (set of 3) and now getting 900 Mbps through the house. I was a Google fan and own few other devices including pixel 6, but Google wifi and nest just brought bad experience and no one is fixing the issue.

looking up the deco 6e now..,

Even the new Pro version suffers from this.  Sell it on Marketplace and buy something else, they are not going to fix this.

Has this issue been resolved? I have 1gb symmetrical but I am getting 850 download / 850 upload on main gateway router and mesh points are 200-300mbps max.

Nope! Had to give up & switch to ASUS XT 9 which doesn’t have this problem

I’m having the same issue. When plugged directly into the nest router I get 900mb but any wireless device only gets between 100mb and 200mb. Shouldn’t I be seeing faster speeds on my wireless devices?

I finally got my other issues sorted out with Comcast/Xfinity and now I have this one...   And it looks to been going on for more than a month...  Jeff, What gives?  If I connect wired to the Xfinity Cable Modem I get 480mbps.  If I connect to it's WiFi I get the same speed.  When I connect to my Google Nest node that's plugged into the Xfi modem I get 130mbps, but if I reboot it I get  ~460mbps+ range, for a while.  Meaning when I ran the same test the next morning on the same node was back to 130mbps.

Jeff, can you tell us if Google has been able to duplicate this issue and is truly working on it.  This post started in September.  Right now I have CAT6 strung out from the modem to my computer room.  NOT GOOD!

I would like to echo @CAMaple's frustration with the lack of support Google is providing to resolve this issue. What I find even more disturbing is when I run a "speed check" via the Google Home application. It would have me believe that my internet is "Blazing Fast". But, when I run a speed check using a different application. The results are drastically different! See Below..

Google Home App Wifi TestGoogle Home App Wifi TestSpeed Test App Google MeshSpeed Test App Google Mesh

To make matters worse, and like many here, when I reconnect to the AT&T router via Wifi and run the same test via the Speed Test App. The results show an increase in upload speed by more than 2 times that of what the Google Wifi mesh provides. See below...

IMG_E35CB3AA9CD5-1.jpeg

My studio is hardwired to the router via CAT 6 and I get the full 1K that I pay for. Additionally, for Google to advertise that this system can provide 1k plus speeds but only deliver one-quarter of that is borderline false advertising.

Google Wifi - Google StoreGoogle Wifi - Google Store

But I find it especially egregious that Google would give, what is in my opinion, such a terrible problem a big fat shoulder shrug. While also telling its customers"Oh! We're really sorry about that! This is a well know problem and we're "looking into it". So in the meantime, I'm going to move this message with all of the other messages that we've swept under the rug and never get back to you or provide updates.

Seriously. We need answers @Jeff

This entire time (2 years), I've been thinking that this has been my internet problem(s). I've had a GBPS in a previous home and went to 500 MBPS where I currently live. I receive 300MBPS - This 300 seemed to be common between both living places. I just upgraded my internet (500 MBPS) to a GBPS tonight. Plugging directly into the modem or the main Google WiFi gets me close to the 1 GBPS, but WiFi and hardwiring to a secondary puck are around 300 MBPS (same as before). Do we still not have a resolution to this? @Jeff? Please help!

There was a firmware update a few weeks ago which allegedly solved this issue... but guess what. No news, this is definitely not a priority for development, we are literally stuck and our friend @Jeff seemed to vanish, unfortunately

I have the exact same scenario going on. 800/800 wired. 280/175 wifi no matter where I am in my house. Very frustrating
