Wireless Printer

I am trying to install a replacement Canon Pixma MG 3650S wireless printer onto my Google Mesh network. I had the same printer before which worked wirelessly but the new replacement one isn't being seen. How do I connect it to the Google network.

Hi, Stevo.

Thanks for reaching out about your question with your printer. I'm sorry it's been a frustrating experience for you, but let's see how we can get that sorted out and working fully.

I do have a few questions for you.

  • Do you have any issues getting anything else to connect to the network, or is it just the printer?
  • Was the old printer connecting up until the point when you replaced it?
  • Do you have the printer hardwired to a computer as well, or is it totally wireless?
  • Do you still have access to the old printer to see if it will connect?

If you can give me a little more info, I'm sure we can get this worked out. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks.

Hi Jeff

The Google Mesh network is good and all other devices (I-phones, I-Pads and this IMac connect successfully all round the house so yes it is only the printer that is a problem. I understand Google Mesh doesn’t support WPS so I have tried all the other options to connect wirelessly but always the printer is not found or visible.

The old printer was working wirelessly until it started printing badly and was never satisfactory after that. I do still have the old printer and could attempt to connect it again if you think that would help.

At present I have the new (identical) printer hardwired to my IMac.

I didn’t know you could set the Canon Pixma MG3650 up to be either wireless or hardwired. Interesting.

I look forward to your further thoughts. I still don’t see where one can add a printer to the Nest configuration. All my other devices are showing but since Nest became responsible for providing Google support printers don’t seem to be on their help screen.

Regards

Stevo

Hi, Stevo.

Thanks for getting back. I've been spending some time looking at this, and I think we have an odd mix of factors going on. First, to clarify something, I didn't mean to imply that there was as mode to change on your printer for hardwire or wireless function. As long as it's on your network, it should be discoverable.

To get a bit more clarity on your situation, I have a few additional questions.

  • Are you trying to print directly to your printer using the WiFi direct feature of the printer, or trying to print over your WiFi network connection?
  • Have you tried to see if you can print with the Canon PRINT app from your phone (just to test that wireless communication is working)?
  • Does the Home app see the older printer if you plug it in?

Sorry to make you pull out the old printer, but it will help us narrow down for sure if the issue is with the printer's communication or if it's an issue on the app side. From there, we can definitely know where to take support.

TraceySteel197, could you go ahead and create a new thread for your question? It will give you a bit of extra visibility on the issue and should be able to speed up a response. Thanks.

Hi Jeff

Old Pixma printer connected to wi-fi network immediately and is identifiable as an Air printer on my phone. New printer not visible to either phone or IMac wirelessly via Air Print. Attached screen shot from Google Wi-Fi screen which has picked up the old printer but not the new one. How do I delete old printer to add the new one - I think that is the answer !!!!!!!

Hey, Stevo.

I'm happy to hear that we're getting a little closer to sorting it out. So what I'm guessing is going on is that you've been printing all along via AirPrint. You probably don't need to remove the old printer, but rather you would need to properly add the new printer to the AirPrint sharing. Apple has some guides on how to manage the printers through AirPrint, but this one in particular should help.

Sharing a printer:  https://apple.co/2XkI6PH

You can remove printers from AirPrint, according to Apple's guides. As long as you're all connected to the same network, you should be able to get back to printing normally. It might be worth asking for some help on Apple's forum if this guide doesn't get you where you need to be. Let me know if it works out.

Thanks.

Hi, all.

As we're not seeing any recent activity here, I'm going to go ahead and close up the thread. If anyone has more to add or needs anything else, please feel free to open a new discussion.

Thanks.

I'm piggybacking on this thread with a similar issue. I suspect the problem is that your printer (like mine) only supports 2.4 GHz WiFi and there's no easy way I've found to force my other devices (e.g., my phone) to connect to the 2.4 GHz network. As a result, my phone can't send print jobs to my wireless printer, because they're not on the same network.

Jeff - is there a solution to this issue? It's terribly frustrating. Thanks.
