Door position detection

Does the Yale Lock not have door position detection? I have auto lock on x1 Min, and j left the door open to carry items inside. I then noticed it auto locks while still open which could be bad if I slam the door closed while the deadbolt is out.

Hi Bpostel11,

Thanks for visiting the Community. I’m sorry to hear that and for the delayed response. Thanks for sharing that with us. It looks like your Nest x Yale lock isn’t calibrated. No worries, we’ll sort this out. A few questions: is your Nest app Home/Away assist settings on? Do you have any family members whom you’ve shared access with? Do you have an Android or iPhone? Is your lock’s deadbolt calibrated? Also, when did you first notice the issue?

If you have Auto-Lock on, always make sure to remember your pass code and make sure others who have access to your home memorize their pass code, so nobody accidentally gets locked out. For instance, you might be getting the mail and didn’t bring your phone with you.

When Auto-Lock is enabled, you can choose to have it automatically lock your door when you’re Home, Away, or both:

  • When you’re home, you can choose whether you want Auto-Lock on or off. Auto-Lock settings will be set to Home when at least one person who has shared access to your home is home and sharing their phone’s location.
  • When you’re away, the only available option is to have Auto-Lock automatically lock your door whenever the Nest × Yale Lock detects that you and your family are away. If you don’t want your lock to Auto-Lock when everyone is away, you will need to disable Auto-Lock altogether.

Try the steps here:

  1. On your Nest app home screen, tap Settings
  2. Select your lock.
  3. Tap Home/Away Assist.
  4. Tap Auto-Lock to turn it on or off.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

JT

Hi, thanks for reaching out. There’s no issue with Home/Away or knowing how to turn off or on Auto Lock. It’s the fact that the door lock does not have Door Position Sensing. So Auto Lock is great and all, but only if you know your door is shut and locked.

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing that with us. Let’s have a better look — factory reset your Nest x Yale lock.

Here’s how:

  1. Remove the battery cover and batteries.
To remove the battery cover, you’ll need either the battery cover key that came in the box with your Nest × Yale Lock or a thumbtack. A small allen or hex wrench may also work.
    • Insert the key or thumbtack into the hole on top of the battery compartment and press down firmly.
    • Grip the cover near the top and pull it off while you continue to press with the key or thumbtack.
    • Remove all the batteries.
  2. Unscrew the 2 bolts holding the mounting plate.
  3. Remove the mounting plate to reveal the reset button, which is located on the left side of the cable connector.
  4. Hold down the reset button while you put in the batteries.
  5. Keep holding down on the reset button until the light turns red and the lock says “Just a moment, erasing all settings.”
  6. Release the reset button.
  7. Take out one battery each from the left and right side of the lock to expose the screw holes.
  8. Place the mounting plate on your door and line up the screw holes.
  9. Screw in the 2 bolts holding the mounting plate.
  10. Put the 2 batteries back in.
  11. The Nest × Yale Lock will say “Hi, from Yale and Nest” when the reset is complete.
  12. Replace the battery cover.
To replace the cover, insert the 2 tabs on the bottom of the cover into the holes in the lock, then push the cover until the tab at the top locks it on.

Note: After you reset the lock, you must create a master pass code on the lock before you set it up with the Nest app.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

JT

Hello,

what will this reset do? Are you saying that Auto Lock should only happen when the door is in the closed position? Does the Yale lock have Door Position Detection like other brands (August, Wyze)?

Hi there,

Good question! By default, the Nest × Yale Lock will not automatically lock itself, but you can use the Nest app to set your lock to automatically lock itself. You can choose how long your lock should wait before automatically locking, and you can have Auto-Lock on all the time or only when no one’s home. It might not be calibrated so performing a factory reset would re-calibrate your lock. You may also turn off and on the Auto-Lock timer setting to see if it works.

Try the steps here:

On the app home screen, tap Settings Nest settings icon > select your lock > tap Volume > select Low or High.

Keep me posted.

Best,

JT

Is there Door Position Detection?

Are you suggesting that calibrating the lock will fix “Auto Lock” to only function under its parameters and only when the door is closed?

Hi there,

Good question! Your Nest x Yale lock doesn’t have a motion sensor to determine whether it locks the door or not. The Auto-Lock feature uses a timer to lock the door after a predetermined time. You may turn off your lock’s Auto-Lock feature to avoid inconvenience. Instead use the One Touch Locking feature.

Here’s how:

Press the Yale button Yale on nest lock icon or hold your palm over the keypad to lock your home when you leave. If this doesn’t work, check the settings in the app:

  1. On the Nest app home screen, tap Settings Nest settings icon.
  2. Select the lock.
  3. Tap One touch locking, then turn it on..

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Best,

JT
