Nest Secure Dropped but what about my extra Detects

VTron21

Since Google has just now announced that it will drop support for the Nest Secure in 1 Year.  I, as well as many others, will need to look at replacing the system.  The offer of a free replacement of the Nest Secure starter kit (Nest Secure and 2 Nest detects) with the ADT Equivalent is nice.  But I have more than 2 Nest Detects.  I actually have 5, 3 being used for Doors and windows and 2 as just motion sensors.  While the ADT Equivalent is said to come with 2 Dore/Window sensors and 1 motion sensor, I'll still need another Door/Window sensor and 1 motion sensor.

So, My Question is:  Will the Nest Detects work with this ADT System? and if not, will there be a credit of some sort for these additional sensors I will need to purchase when getting their ADT Equivalents?

Right, I have 12 detects, and many other Nest devices like thermostat with many remote temp sensors, 6 cameras, 3 door locks. What about them as most of them connect to the Secure.

I don't know about the Temp Sensors, but they probably connect directly to the Nest Thermostat.  But the Camera's do directly connect to your WiFi, nest secure isn't needed there.  And the Door locks, well the Nest Yale Lock anyway, comes with a Nest Connect and will use that to connect.  I recall an email regarding lock that it would no longer be able to use the Nest Hub Max to connect to the net and you needed to add a nest connect if you didn't already have one.

If google did the Stadia shutdown right, they really screwed up here.
I'll never buy another nest product again. What a ripoff.

Well, they could have said, sorry you get nothing too. leaving us completely holding the bag and either buy new adt equipment or asking Brinks to send theirs.

I did not realize they shut down stadia, not that I used it.

You buy things you embed into your home from a company like google because they're going to be around. But if they're going to neuter their products after you've spent time and money drilling them into your home to make them flush, you'll never trust them again.

Oh I get it, my whole smart home integration is google.  I have multiple nest speakers and displays, Chromecast with gtv, a door bell.  I'm just looking at the glass half full. But I am annoyed I'll have to either buy a whole new system from someone else or get around $200 in free with covered service for a year. And still have to buy new sensors.

It's embarrassing how many Google products I have, at least 20 assistant devices, secure, nest, cameras, Google TVs... I bought in to Google, and I regret buying into their locked ecosystem that they can kill on a whim. If I can't access a local API, the device is dead to me.

Imagine them just deciding you can't use a pixel phone anymore because it was too old... People would riot. I'm sick of them and their "cloud is the future" nonsense.

Google is pushing all of us customers to adopt other smart home platforms. This is absolutely ridiculous, especially for a product that works.

Have a few sensors. I think they communicate with secure so not sure if they will work. Can someone confirm? We need to be compensated for this.

VTron21

The only sensors I know for sure need the Nest Secure are the Nest Detects.  Everything else should be able to use the Nest Connect

Google support told me the detects will not work.   😞   Anyone get through with ADT for the free system. I was disconnected twice.

I was about to try calling them... Their phone system is probably overwhelmed with calls just like the one I'm about to make.

Well I got through to ADT, they are only giving the Hub, 2 door/window sensors and a motion sensor.  He couldn't tell me if the Nest Detects would work with the system or not.

The extra sensors from ADT are fairly cheap. My question is if I cancel the ADT monitoring subscription after the first free year does the ADT system still work with a local alarm, etc.

Fairly cheap? Go ahead and multi minimum 15.99 x 22 and add tax and shipping. Then tack on 800 for 7 Smoke / CO2 detectors and tell me how "cheap" the switch is.

I understand, don't shoot the messenger.

Why are you replacing your Protects?  Those are not on the to be discontinued list.  Seems you spent $800 for nothing.

Looks like the adt free system will work without a subscription.

Until it doesn't.

I tried today 6 times (8-5-2023) and was disconnected. I end up connecting via chat, that lasted hour long but ended up with a resolution and the offer code.

So we have 20+ Window/Door Nest Detect sensors. Can we please get a reply from Google whether or not these will work with ADT? That's $1,000 in sensors that won't potentially work with ADT, and how about my 7 Nest WiFi and Wired Smoke detectors. Supposedly work for 7 years and you kill them less than 4 years into their existence. Google needs to step up with some answers.

This is beyond embarrassing for Google - I cannot believe I have invested so much money in my Google security system after their Fall 2020 email about "commitment to Nest Secure" - what a horrible, out of touch move by the company

Been supporting Google products for a longtime including the Pixel line. Own a Pixel7 right now and that is the last Google hardware I am buying.

Invested so much in their systems and this is what we get.

So, after quick searching, Google is officially killing any support for the Nest Detect or the Nest Smoke / CO2 Alarm Wired and Battery kits with regards to working with ADT. Both of these products sit on store shelves right now for purchase and Google is doing absolutely nothing about it, and neither is ADT.

As for the literal math,

22 Nest Detect Sensors at $49.99 Each + Tax = $1,182.92

7 Wired with Battery Backup Nest Smoke / CO2 Alarm with fine print in the manual they will last 7 years = $903.00 with an Average Cost of $119.99 over the years.

I'd like to extend an official kite for Google to go Fly for their wasting of over $2,085.92 in their Eco-System that they could have easily extended to working with ADT. The communication connections are possible, they just decided to hose all of the existing customer base.

You can't even BUY a discounted Windows/Door Sensor package from ADT, let along Smoke / CO2 Detectors without getting them on the phone, and they don't sell elsewhere.

Thanks Google, thanks for supporting your customers. Your support is a Joke, your business plan is a joke, and your commitment to existing and future customer base has absolutely no track record of staying power.

"Nest Detect or the Nest Smoke / CO2 Alarm Wired and Battery"

I assume you mean the Nest Protect, I cannot find anything about these being dropped.  In fact a friend of mine has those, but doesn't have the Nest secure system.

The Nest Detects are the sensors for the nest guard. So yeah.

ADT rep kinda gave me a try and use them response then buy new sensors.

I paid $889 for the base station and 11 nest detects. They're offering $200 or an ADT system with 2 sensors and a motion sensor.

Personally, I don't use the professional monitoring, so that's not of interest to me. I want an equivalent set of hardware or my money back. The nest secure sensors we originally purchased double as motion sensors and door/window sensors.

So I expect 1 base station, 11 window/door sensors, and at 5 motion sensors (at least half as many motion sensor to give me the same coverage). This is currently on sale for $328.83 from their site, and must be purchased with monitoring at 24.99/mo.

Time to move on from this **bleep**ty device ecosystem that Google has been selling us for so many years, but can't seem to properly support moving forward.

I called ADT and was able to get the new equipment ordered. The rep did not think the detect sensors would work. He said you can cancel the subscription and the equipment will still work. You do still have to sign a contract even though he claimed it can be canceled at any time.

An ADT Smart Home Hub, 2 Door/Window Sensors, and a Motion Sensor for no cost.
Free 12 months of professional alarm monitoring, then $19.99 plus tax /mo. Cancel anytime

I plan to wait to set it up till the old nest secure and detects stop working. The rep said this would be fine, but the 12 months of monitoring starts from now(2 weeks from now). I understand some people may not want to deal with ADT but for me, it is better than nothing. Might not renew my aware subscription for the cameras.

I talked to ADT.  I was told that ADT supports all Nest Equipment, i.e. door, smoke, door bells, video, and locks.  You have to give ADT the code key to get that information.  My question is what will it cost for needed service levels.  If you look at the ADT website they have many levels of support from basic to video motion and the costs for each is different. I was told the free equipment listed is above and beyond Nest detectors I already have.

So, what service is free and becomes $19.99 for the second year.  How long a contract to we have to sign and so forth.  After I do more research, I will call them back.

More information:

ADT does NOT support nest door/motion detectors nor do they support the Nest smoke/CO detectors.  You will have to buy them.  I was told they may start to support them in September, but no guarantee on that.  I looks like I may start from scratch.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the delay. While we don't have the specifics, our friends at the ADT support team are the best team to help you find out the compatibility of their device with Nest devices.

Regards,

Juni

Thanks Juni. From adt  after many hours on the phone. Smoke alarms and most cameras , lock and most doorbells do not work with ADT. Basically you need to start from scratch. The $200 voucher will not even come close to the cost   To make it right. If you want  co2 sensors ADT wanted to charge me 1700 for a new setup because the self install is very limited. We are testing out a few non Google systems  after the ADT fiasco

Personally, I'd keep the nest smoke alarms and not worry about integrating them with ADT.

Even my friend that is a certified fire alarm system designer uses the nest over other options out there for his house.
