T013 Unable to connect Nest x Yale with Nest Connect

I purchased the Next x Yale lock, physically installed it in my door and expected the hard part to be done. Boy was I wrong! When I tried to connect the device to my wifi network I received a T013 error, which for some reason is not documented at all. I tried searching online and could not find any helpful information to deal with this error.

I subsequently ran through all the troubleshooting steps and even spent 5+ hours on the phone with support but to no avail. Eventually support concluded that it was an issue with my device and sent me a replacement device which I used to confirm that my Connector is working correctly.

The key to getting the lock to connect is to ensure that you are using the 2.4 GHz frequency on your router. My router uses something called Smart Steering which merges the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies and was causing havoc during the device connection. Once I split out the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies on my router into separate channels, it was a simple process to connect the device. Why this important step not listed as the first step in the installation instructions or why the customer service agents are not aware of this subtly is beyond me. But hopefully this post will save others countless hours.
