Ask for an alarm?

Gasman
Bronze

Just how is one meant to ask for an alarm?

I can ask one of my minis

Set and alarm

OK, what time

8AM

and alarm is set for 8AM.

If I ask for 2:10PM, I get an alarm for 10PM. If I ask for 1:15PM, I get an alarm for 3PM.
Not always, but enough to ask this question.

Now going to try 24hr syntax.
Hmm, seems to understand that, at least on the two attempts I have tried, 18:30 and 14:10

Nope, 24Hr syntax does not work all the time. 😞

Now 18:00 here, so asked for a time of 1030. It decided that was 10:30PM today, not 10:30 AM tomorrow, which is when I wanted it.

Hi Gasman,

That certainly hasn't been easy for you ― let's check it out. A few questions: what are the Nest speakers you are using in setting up an alarm? Was it working fine before? If so, when did this concern start? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops. Restarting your phone might also help.

For more detailed information about setting up an alarm, click here.

Tell us how it goes.

Best,

Dan

No, it is not, there are selective on what they want to hear. 😞
Last night I was in the kitchen and asked the kitchen mini to set an alarm. The one in the living room, behind closed doors answered? 😞 Normally it is the other way around, I will ask the LR mini, which is just over my shoulder and the kitchen one, again behind closed door will answer.  I had to unplug the kitchen mini to get any response from it. TBH I am sick and tired of rebooting the bloody things all the time. I have even rebooted my router in desperation, yet every other device (non google) works fine on my network, phone, tv, tablet, smart switches,  you name it they work, just not the minis to any reliable constant conversation.
Today I asked my living room mini to cancel an alarm I had set. Just the one had been set at 1pm.

Me: OK Google Cancel alarm
Mini: Ok at what time?

Me: No! I said Cancel

Mini: Ok, what day and time.

I eventually got it done after about the 5th attempt. I also sent feedback that when I ask to Cancel an alarm, to not offer to set one.
This could be a comedy program on TV. 😞
I keep thinking of Friends and the epsiode with phoebe and the smoke detector. 🙂
She destroyed the detector, yet it still went off. 🙂

More feedback

Just asked the kitchen mini to 'Play some REM' , which I do regularly.
Mini: OK, here is some music by Ollie Muirs ???

Second time of asking, it actually played the correct Spotify station featuring REM, that it always plays?

Hey there,

Thank you so much for the update. We now need to revert your Nest speakers to its default and original settings bye doing the factory reset. Setting it back up is needed. Depending if you have a Nest Mini or Google Home Mini, open this link for the correct steps to take in doing the factory reset.

Tell us how it goes.

Cheers,

Dan

May as well close it now, as I will not have time to reset everything. Will have to come back to it after my holday.
Just asked the living room mini to switch the printer on and it responded with 'turning the printer off' 😞

Hi Dan,

Thank you. Now back from my holiday. The first two days back, I thought the minis were behaving, but that was a false hope. Last night I was asking what 500ml was in fluid ounces, and was giving some stupid number for 500 miles?
I thought all my threads had been locked, so I started another last night.
https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Latest-deaf-response-from-two-google-mi...
So I am ready to try any debugging steps you might have.

Hi Gasman,

Welcome back. And to confirm, you have a different issue where it gives an incorrect answer, right? How about the media routines? Are they now working as they should? What Nest speakers are we working with? Are they in a speaker group?

Let’s attempt to set an alarm:

  • “Hey Google, set an alarm for XX.” (Example: "Hey Google, set an alarm for 3 P.M.").

Let’s confirm if the Google devices recognized the question or command correctly:

  1. Ask the Google Home to “Repeat the question.” Note: This will repeat last question.
  2. Confirm if the question repeated back the same as to how have asked it.
  • If yes, continue with troubleshooting.
  • If not, you need to ask the question again.
    • If it still does not recognize the question, speak slower or try another question and have the Google Home repeat the question to verify it was understood correctly.

Check the status of the alarm:

  • To check the status of an alarm or timer:
    • Alarm: "When is my alarm set for?”
    • Timer: "How much time is left?"
  • To cancel an alarm or timer:
    • Alarm: "Cancel my alarm."
    • Timer: “Cancel timer.”

If the issue persists, let’s factory reset one of your Nest devices. Here’s how. Once done, set it backup and replicate the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Dan

OK, just got back from my extended holiday.

At first all my minis seemed to hear what I was asking. I assumed you had fixed things at your end.

That lasted all of two days.

Tonight I asked two minis

Hey Google, what is 500 millilitres in fluid ounces

Answer: 500 miles is some stupid number in fluid ounces. ???

OK, gave up on the minis and asked my phone, but the minis still pick up the question plus the phone gives the same stupid answer. 😞

However the phone also gives some default questions, one of which is 'How many ounces in 500ml', so I select that and the answer is 500L is 16907.011 us fluid ounces??????
Now I can do the simple math, why can't Google?? perhaps should be called Goof fle? 😞

Ooh, just asked Alexa on the phone and that could give me the correct answer? 🙂

Hey  Gasman,

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Home Mini. I'd love to help.Could you post a screenshot of your "My Activity" logs so we can take a deeper look? Follow these steps below to know how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Tap My Activity.

If you are using the public preview of the Google Home app, go to privacy, then tap "Your data in the Assistant."

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

That was over a week ago? 😞

I did manage to find it. Now it places ml for my saying millilitres, which is correct. hen decided that meant miles apparently?

And if I am using a PC, which I am?

Seems I was not logged in for some strange reason. 😞 Please note, at no time did I say 13.
Most times I can say a time, and they work out whether today or tomorrow. SO if I asked my bedroom mini to set an alarm for 7am, it would know for tomorrow, as 7am has passed today.
If I had yet to reach that time, then it would be for today unless I say otherwise.

Again same words, said several times before it understands the instruction.

Here is todays fiasco with a factory reset mini.

Please excuse the language as they annoy the hell out of me all the time. 😞

Hi Dan,

I monitored my routines whilst away on holiday. Only once did the routine not switch off a light.

I have been asking them to set alarms, and so far they have been doing so, but easy times 07:00, 08:30 etc.
They have also been able to cancel the alarms without any issue, well so far.

I just asked the living room mini what time it was, and after it gave the time I said 'OK Google, repeat the question' to which it responded 'Sorry I do not unerstand' ?
What I have noticed since coming home, is that I do not always get a response when I ask them to switch on/off a device. They switch it to the state (normally off) but do not say anything?

Obviously with a light, that can be seen whether it has happened or not, but for other devices, say phone charger that is undetemined as to whether it did it or not.

All of these 4 minis have been rebooted and factory reset several times over the months, and that never seems to make a difference.

Gasman
Bronze
Bronze

OK, found that I cannot address the mini again with that 'last question' prompt.
So far it has heard what I have said. When it does not, I will post back what it thought it heard.

Gasman
Bronze
Bronze

Now getting 'Sorry, I do not understand ' when I ask it to repeat the question after a question. This is without using the Google word.

Gasman
Bronze
Bronze

An alarm was set.

Me: OK Google, cancel the alarm.
It: Sorry, nothing is playing right now.
Me: Repeat the question
It: Sorry I do not understand.

Me: OK, Google, repeat the question
It: Sorry I do not understand.

Will try a factory reset when I get back.

Gasman
Bronze
Bronze

Did a factory reset.
Great, speaker will no longer connect to network? 😞

Finally managed to get it connected, by moving it to another room, and then putting back into living room.

Repeat the last question got the correct answer, so let us see how long this lasts for.

Gasman
Bronze
Bronze

OK, on my newly factory reset Living Room mini (which apparently can hear me from almost everywhere in the household, despite setting audio to -1. 😞

Me: Switch the Uplighter
I say this, as if I ask to switch it on or off, they generally respond with 'switching off'. This way I ahave discovered that they look to see the state of the device and switch it to the other setting, on eq off, off eq on. You get the idea.?

Anyway it responds with 'to get a list of apps in your phone....', which I have mentioned in the past?
Checking the actvity it *thinks* I said 'Switch the app'

If I repeat the command, it then obeys and carries it out.

As I said in the beginning, "Why does it need to be asked twice" ???? 😞

Oh a while back, out of guarantee for certain, but I cannot remember the exact date. Last one was November 20. That was from Currys in the UK.
They all behaved perfectly for a good while, only the last 6 months or so have they gone deaf/stupid. 🙂

Is there a way to export the activity, as the recordings clearly show what I said and not what the minis *think* they heard.

Last night I asked my bedroom mini 'How you you spell lieutenant'.
It decided that I had asked 'How do you spell routine' ???

I asked again and this time it spelt lieutenant ?

Even the newly factory reset living room mini, started playing up after reset.
I asked it to switch the uplighter. This avoids the on/off mistake they keep making.

It decided I had said 'switch the app'  and gave me a pile of BS about looking in my phone. Again repeat the request and it then obeys.

Hi Gasman,

The only way to see the activities of your device is check the "My Activities" on the Google Home app. It shows both your commands and what your device heard. By the way, it looks like you still have a pending case with us and didn't have the chance to reply to our last email. Here's the case ID for your reference: 6-4903000033116.

I understand. It is best if we continue this through that channel to avoid confusion on where to provide you with updates. Also, there's some information that we might ask you that is not allowed to be seen/posted in public.

Let us know if you have additional questions, otherwise; I'll close the thread after 24 hours.

OK, but TBH, I get a better response from you guys here.
I pointed them to this thread and have not heard back from them yet.

Again this is all feedback, as I feel sure, you need to make changes at your end. As one moment something works, you change things at your end, then it does not, then you change something again and it works again.
FWIW my newly factor reset has not changed a bit. 😞

Gasman
Bronze

OK, to add to my woes. 😞

I have an activity that runs on a Saturday at 0600.

It can now at last play radio 2, after the radio debacle, but before it does that, it raises the volume for the bedroom speaker to 30%.

Now it seems when it does that it sets ALL 4 speakers to 30%????

Please ask your 'programmers'? to Google 'regression testing'.
