Can't control TV volume anymore

Komi
Community Member

Curious thing if anyone might be able to explain what's happening.

I have a Samsung TV, using SmartThings to link it to Google Assistant, and everything was working fine.
Even now I can still ask the assistant to turn on and off the TV, change the source, but when I ask to set the TV volume to a given value rather than adjusting it it sets the speaker's own volume.
Changed no configurations and this began to happen 2~3 days ago. Rebooted speaker, but all the same.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I have a Google Smart Hub and use it to change all my wireless devices by voice. I've been running into this problem over the last couple of years. It seems to work...then it doesn't. Then it does. I just tried the phrase posted by ToddR99 on 10-26-22 to say "Hey Google, TV volume 45" making the volume number match my Samsung TU7000 AND IT WORK! It's been over a month that it didn't...but I don't think I tried that EXACT phrase. I tried it twice while I'm typing this and it still worked. Thanks. I hope this helps...although it sounds like you've tried it.

So I tested last night by saying "OK Google, Sony TV Volume 45".  It worked on both Nest Audio and Home Mini.  Not sure if it will continue to work but we will see.

Yep, thanks so much for someone finally figuring out a work around.   So far (knock on wood) I'm on day 7 of "OK/Hey Google, (Sony) TV Volume XX" working perfectly from all my home/nest devices.  Not sure why Google themselves don't know this works or are unwilling to say so.  Kinda silly for their support people to tell people it's a WiFi strength issue considering all other TV commands still worked.  All they need to say is stop adding the word set or change or turn the volume to...  Oh well...hard to say why big companies do what they do!!

Finally, thanks to the tips here, changing the phrase works. Now, I have to get used to saying the commands completely differently. It works though. That's all I care about.  "Hey Google, tv volume 12" and "Hey Google, tv channel 4" work perfectly.

I have a Samsung TV linked to Google Home thru SmartThings. Like everyone else...it was working fine then stopped and wants to change the Nest Hub volume. After reading what has worked for everyone else...I've changed "how" I say the phrase and now say "Hey Google, Increase (or decrease) the TV to 14" and it works.  So simple yet whatever change they made affected so many. Thanks for your help Everyone!

Now that I'm using the new phrases (that Google never told us about), everything works fine, except for one thing. I have an antenna so I get several extra channels in addition to the standard ones. ie. I used to say, "play Channel 62 dash 2 on tv", and Google would reply, "Ok, playing 62 to 2 on tv". I have several channels like that. Channels 4, 7, 50, etc. all have the additional channels. (4.2, 4.3, 4.4, etc.; 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, etc.) Any ideas as to how to get Google to go to those?  Thanks.

Still don’t work for me I tried turning up my volume for my TV but it just tried turning up the volume for my Xbox what a joke lmao

Nope still not working when I tell google to turn up my Roku it Tries controlling my Xbox volume and there’s nothing I can do about it

It's been doing the same thing to me lately. I don't have an xbox, but it trys to control the volume of the Google Frame, saying the max volume is 10, when clearly the Samsung TV volume goes much higher than that. It used to work, then it stopped, but when the "correct" phrase was said...it worked and did so for many months until a couple weeks ago. So I'm confused...it's not working and I've tried all phrases yet it still wants to control the Google Frame.

Frankly, things have just gotten worse. I still cannot control volume. When the home app updated. I think about a month ago I also lost the ability to turn the TV on and off. The same is true with my Apple TV etc. In essence, I have lost the ability to use almost all voice commands that run through my harmony hub. I can still pause and unpause TV and video but that is about it.

Did you try using the new commands discussed here?

It does the same thing to me or it tries controlling my xbox volume its so annoying probably just gunna get an alexa to be honest

So if you say just the words "Hey Google, TV Volume 37" what happens?  Also what is the name of your TV? Are you trying to control the TV or the Roku? If a ROKU then that is probably a very different beast than the issues discussed in most of this thread over the last year.   For me, my TV is called Sony TV in Assistant and since last spring, the simple command above works.  If I say anything else such as "turn the volume on the TV to..." or "Hey Google, Set the Sony TV volume to XX", it does not usually work.  The simple phrase above always works.  ROKU might be the wildcard.  I haven't tried that with my ROKU TV's or stand alone ROKU since the TV itself is an Android TV.

if say just the words "Hey Google, TV Volume 37", it response with "Max volume is 10" choose a volume in that range. If I go outside that range, say to 17...it repeats that and wants a volume between 1 and 10. I don't have a Roku but a Samsung TV. I call the tv "TV". It used to work that way. When I say "Hey Google, Set the TV (or TV volume) to XX it does not work. I've tried all combinations of that. I will take 1 more look...maybe I'm not saying it exactly right?

hmm...hard to say if having a Samsung complicates the matter vs. an Android TV such as my Sony.  A year ago, saying the words 'set' or 'turn' the tv volume to xxx did in fact work, then it stopped working.  I found the solution to be saying simply 'Hey Google, TV volume XX".   That is the way it works for me now.  It's thought that Google had to remove some commands due to some legal issue they had with Sonos (I think it was Sonos) and probably could not say anything for some reason.  Anyway, for sure if you use the words 'Set' or 'Turn' it will not work (at least for me it doesn't).  If you have tried the  simple phrase above  as you mentioned and it still says max is 10 (meaning it thinks you want to change the Google Nest / Home's volume) then I have no idea what the issue is.  Try removing the TV from Google Home and add it back and see if that fixes it.  I don't think anyone has any other answers for you unfortunately.  I've called Google support in the pasts and while they are very friendly and will call you on the phone, they are not much help with this issue at all.  One other last thing you can try if everything else fails is to move your Google Home/Nest close to the TV and see if it has something to do with Googles attempt at proximity to a device.  I don't have a Samsung TV that's compatible or I'd help troubleshoot.  I do have a few ROKU Tv's though so maybe I can try on those.

It's not 100% effective,  but I've got fairly consistent success ever since I changed the TV's name from "TV" to "theTV".

Hey everyone,

Thanks for trying the steps. Has anyone here already tried to unlink the TV from the Home app or tried a complete reset on their Google Nest speakers?

Best,

Princess

I have reset one of my mini speakers, to no avail, but I am experiencing the issue on multiple TVs using multiple Google nest devices and Google Assistant on two different mobile devices (my phone and my tablet), made by different manufacturers, running different iterations of Android.

That says to me this is clearly a software issue because it is not isolated to any one device or TV, and so many of us have been experiencing exactly the same issue.

I have unlinked it several times. I've powered down my devices, but I don't remember if I did a factory reset. I may have, but then again, I may not have wanted to go through that entire process to get set up again.  I seem to remember doing a factory reset on my hub because it kept playing on YouTube every time I asked it to change the channel on the tv. That was very frustrating. It finally stopped doing that at least. (This has been going on for a very long time so I can't remember everything that I've tried. It was a few things, including things on my tv.)

Hi LSimons,

Thanks for responding. I know it's not easy to go through the process of setting up again however, we need to try that so we can check if it still exhibits the same behavior. Fromm there we can isolate further what's causing this to happen.

Best,

Princess

I did see the message. I will reset it and check back.
