Google Nest Mini Sleep command

JohnMcGeough
Community Member

Up until the last couple of days I could instruct my mini nest to “sleep in 20 minutes” and 20 minutes later is would stop. But now it although it acknowledges the command, it keeps on playing after the time period. I have tried saying “stop in 20 minutes”  as well as specifying an actual time, but all to no avail. I have two speakers, and they both are doing the same.
Does anyone know what has changed?

Here’s what support is saying

We have been made aware of reported issues with the Sleep Timer. We’re looking into possible solutions. For the meantime, we would like you to send a feedback about this issue with the steps provided below.

1. Turn on device usage data and crash reports:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Select the device card to share feedback about.
  • At the top-right, select Settings and then Recognition and sharing.
  • Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)
    • Note: For iOS devices, turn on Send device usage and crash reports.

2. Reproduce the issue (Try setting a sleep timer). After the issue occurred, send feedback from the speaker device via voice command (OK Google, send feedback) then say the keywords "GHT3 sleep timer not working".

Hi, thanks for the suggestion but it didn't help me either. Sleep timer still does not work.

Also, I spent about 2 hours on chat with Google support, reinstalled everything, even did a factory reset of the speaker. The problem is still there.

I also think that this must be some kind of an update issue.... That's the only thing that makes sense...

I have several devices and since a few days the sleeptimer did not work on any of it. I have some Problems to believe that it is a firmware issue. It seems to  be an Assistent Problem.

I think the firmware part is just a stock answer. The assistent works. It is the Google Home backend code I feel. The sad thing is I think someone pushed a button unintentionally that did this. They are about to release a totally different look and feel of it and it will be compatible with all brands of devices, even Apple. So they are taking on a huge upgrade of Google Home. If it was a plan to remove this, they are NOT so stupid to leave the statement where you choose Sleep Sounds, to leave the page comment at the top that the sounds stop automatically.

I just set up a brand new Google Nest Hub (gen 2), and I'm having the same issue. Saying both "Play Alt 92.3 for 30 minutes" or "Play Alt 92.3" + "Stop playing after 30 minutes", it'll acknowledge the 30 minute timer, and then never stop playing.

Did a full factory reset and still cannot use my sleep timer.  This had been working fine.  Google please fix this!

Same thing happened to me about 3 weeks ago (just after the date that our clocks had to be turned back). Tried EVERYTHING. Finally tried deleting my Google account opened a new one, then factory reset all my speakers, deleted the Google Home app, reinstalled it then set up everything as new. Timers on all 6 devices started working as it should………..Until now! Tried the same thing, but on only two speakers this time.……..No go. Must have been a coincidence with the timing and Google fixing the issue?

I have exactly the same problem, probably started a couple of weeks ago. Has there been a recent firmware/software update that may have caused this?

I usually ask my google mini to stop playing music at night when I’m in bed by saying” Hy google stop play in an hour or stop playing in 60 minutes”

But it now just carries on playing. Every thing else seems ok, alarms streaming etc

Whats changed?

Hi Chalkie,

We've heard feedback that turning off sleep sounds after one hour is insufficient for some of our users, so we made the decision to remove the end time. We're currently investigating ways to build a comparable solution and we appreciate your patience.

Thanks,

Dan

You have heard no such **bleep**ing feedback. If you did you would have changed the display on sleep timers that says what is on this screenshot I just took. STOP SAYING THIS BECAUSE IT IS A **bleep**ING LIE. Screenshot_20221101-111743.png

Do you honestly believe that anyone would ask for that change to happen and somehow in the huge list of work that needs doing that's the item the Google Devs would pick up and then only half implement?

I just can't believe any human would rather have something play indefinitely rather than say play for x hours or minutes.  This combined with the fact that as you keep getting told it still says it will stop automatically and it works on a phone (at least for me) but not a speaker.

Please stop trying to fob people off.

Hi Chalkie,

Thanks for the details you shared. Our team is aware about sleep timers that aren’t working for turning off music at the specified time and are still working on a fix.

For ambient sound, Google made the decision to remove the end time based on user feedback. This behavior is intended, and we're currently investigating ways to build a comparable solution. Hope this helps explain!

For news and updates about sleep timers, keep an eye on the recommended answer to the main thread. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to start a new one for I will be locking this thread after 24 hours.

I am having exactly the same issue with my Smart Speaker and Nest mini. These systems have worked flawlessly for two years. In the last week or so the shutoff timer for music playback simply doesn't work and the speaker continue to play until you tell them to stop. Regular timers do not seem to be effected and are working. It is only with music. i.e. Hey Google Play meditation on Pandora for one hour. The speaker fully acknowledges the command and says it will stop playing in one hour. However, it does not stop playing. The only recent change to my network is that I added a Chromecast 4K to my home. I have unplugged the Chromecast, but it did not fix the issue.

Okay I'm glad to see that my devices are not the only ones having issues. At first I thought in my sleep deprived state (have a newborn) that I forgot to give the command like I usually do. But then after doing the command for nap time and being very aware that I did give the command, I realized it wasn't me. Commenting so hopefully I get notified if/when a solution is posted.

Same problem... It worked just few days ago, but not anymore... It answers -the nest hub will stop playing in xx minutes, but keep playing after that time...

I have 3 nest hubs scattered around the house and none of them are stopping after xx mins? Whats going on?

Hi everyone, I've been chatting with Google support quite a lot about this and they gave me instructions on how to send logs about the issue to them. I think if they get logs it could really help them solve the issue, so I am sharing the instructions here, anyone can do the same. If you just set the sleep timer for 1 minute, it will take about two minutes of your time to do it.

The instructions from Google support:

We have been made aware of reported issues with the Sleep Timer. We’re looking into possible solutions. For the meantime, we would like you to send a feedback about this issue with the steps provided below.

1. Turn on device usage data and crash reports:

2. Reproduce the issue (Try setting a sleep timer). After the issue occurred, send feedback from the speaker device via voice command (OK Google, send feedback) then say the keywords "GHT3 sleep timer not working".

Thanks for the help. I have reported and sent feedback on my google nest devices

Hello,

Since a couple of days, my sleep timer doesn't work anymore.

I use the command like Google suggests, my Nest Audio responds with "[device name] will stop after x minutes" (or sometimes "[device name] stops at 10 past 12" e.g.). However, the music doesn't stop anymore.

The only thing I changed is, I changed from an LG G7 to a Google Pixel 6a a couple of days ago. However, all my Google assistant interaction is directly with my Nest Audio, so I'm not sure how this influences it.

I looked at routines in the Google Home app and turned them all off. This didn't work either.

Edit: To add to my post; I just tried turning off my Google Pixel 6a, but my Nest Audio didn't behave any different.

Edit 2: I also just tried it on another of my Nest Audio devices. This didn't work either

My Google nest Mini is doing the same thing.

I am using a workaround until Google gets the issue fixed. I use my phone to play Sleep sounds and then cast the audio to my mini. With the phone, the sound shuts of after 1 hour automatically. I have an Android phone.

Hi there. Same has happened to me. This started about 3/4 days ago. Have 2 Google Nest Audio (2nd gen) set up as a stereo pair and the sleep timer no longer works. Get the response back that the music will stop in the requested time but it does not. Most annoying since have used this facility for around a year. Have changed absolutely nothing, but have noticed that the firmware version has recently updated to version 324896 that may be the cause.

Tried a complete factory reset of both speakers and re installation but no difference at all.

Would be nice if someone from Google would comment since posted separately about this when it first happened but no response.

I’ve experienced the same thing, it started about 4 days ago. Google accepts and answers ‘… will stop playing after x minutes’ but nothing happens. I have a Google Nest Hub II. I tried to do a factory reset but that didn’t help.

Decided to try the online chat support about this problem. After numerous checks to no avail it seems they are getting a number of customer reports about this problem. Seems to possibly tie in with the latest firmware update. Consequently they working on trying to fix it. Was advised that I will be contacted by email when hopefully fixed.

I've had the same exact issue the last few days, on a Google Home speaker and a Google Nest (1st Generation) display.  I also have a Pixel 6A, but I'm not using it to control the speaker or the display.

I just switched from Alexa and purchased 4 speakers and now I have the same issue.  Nest Audio responds with "[device name] will stop after x minutes  but it does not.  I have even completely reset to no avail.  Considering sending back and just reverting to Amazon again - any ideas?

I'm not a pro or an expert, just a layman with the same problem, but I would hold off on returning the devices -- seems this is a widespread problem, probably software/firmware related, so presumably they'll distribute a fix via update soon.

Chribba

Same issue but I'm using sleep sounds to play for x hours. Under "my activity" it does look like the assistant tried to do something at the ending time but it comes out as "sorry i don't understand", so almost as if it tried to stop but it just doesn't get the command and as such keeps playing.

I read some other thread that Google removed the default one hour limit on sleep sounds recently so sounds like they broke things for everyone.

Someone said creating a routine was a workaround, but I don't want to have to deal with routines for a simple task like playing something for a short time.

Kadven

As a temporary measure until this annoying fault can be fixed, for my own use I ended up creating short routine.

I have always used the sleep timer facility at  night when I often put some relaxing music on when I put head down and just say stop music in 25 minutes. Since this is no longer working I have just created a simple routine with 1 action of 'stop playing' and put a starter execution time of 1:45 daily. As you might expect I rarely go to bed until late. This does seem to work.

Mistwell

So what does your routine look like exactly? Is it "Start playing X at 1:45" and then "Stop playing at 2:45" or something like that?

Hi. My routine is 'Play radio xx for 60 minutes'. I usually fall asleep before that

Same issue here - no changes on my end. Unplugging did not work either. 😭😭😭

RobinX

Having the same issue.  The sleep timer does not work for music anymore (worked fine last week).  The Nest Mini recognizes the command (repeats and confirms the sleep timer is set), but keeps playing after the time I request the music to stop.  I have used commands "hey google, set sleep timer for 1 hr" and "hey google, play music for 1 hr") but the music does not stop. Must be a firmware update, hopefully they can fix this ASAP

Can I please post a link to the main thread for this topic. Thanks

I used to be able to set a sleep timer to stop music from Youtube Music playing after a certain amount of time. Saying the command "set sleep timer for 1 hour" gets acknowledged by my Nest Hub Max and it says it will stop media in 1 hour. However, the media does not stop playing. It worked until about last week. Tested sleep timers on a nest mini and a home hub which also don't work. It kind of defeats the purpose of nest devices.

Hi @lnhuang

I will let the community support team know and escalate your post.

In the meantime you might be able to say "Hey Google, stop playing at <specific time>" as a workaround.
