Google Nest Mini Sleep command

JohnMcGeough
Community Member

Up until the last couple of days I could instruct my mini nest to “sleep in 20 minutes” and 20 minutes later is would stop. But now it although it acknowledges the command, it keeps on playing after the time period. I have tried saying “stop in 20 minutes”  as well as specifying an actual time, but all to no avail. I have two speakers, and they both are doing the same.
Does anyone know what has changed?

Here’s what support is saying

We have been made aware of reported issues with the Sleep Timer. We’re looking into possible solutions. For the meantime, we would like you to send a feedback about this issue with the steps provided below.

1. Turn on device usage data and crash reports:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Select the device card to share feedback about.
  • At the top-right, select Settings and then Recognition and sharing.
  • Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)
    • Note: For iOS devices, turn on Send device usage and crash reports.

2. Reproduce the issue (Try setting a sleep timer). After the issue occurred, send feedback from the speaker device via voice command (OK Google, send feedback) then say the keywords "GHT3 sleep timer not working".

Hi jmn1,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

That certainly hasn’t been easy for you. Let’s check what’s going on. A few things: Do you have other members added in your home app? If so, is there any chance that they changed it? You can also check the Google assistant activity and check if there were actions that happened during those times that it stopped. Check the steps below.

Check Google Assistant activity history

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top-right, tap the account.
  3. Tap My Activity.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni,

I am the only person who lives in my home, so no one else is connected but me. I checked my activity and it's only showing what I have done, and it doesn't appear I've talked in my sleep to tell it to stop. Being that I start the podcast from my phone and cast it to the nest mini, there is no activity showing when I start it, except when I tell the assistant to set a sleep timer for 8 hours.

I did, however, stop doing this because it wasn't working and appears it needs to be sent to a technical team to configure better. I found that using the white noise sleep sound for X number of hours works just fine, so I am doing that instead. I would appreciate your assistance in escalating the main issue though so people can listen to what they want to while they sleep.

Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Nest Mini. I'm glad ambient sound is working. A few things I'd like to verify:

  • Do you have other Nest speakers? If so, are they experiencing the same issue?
  • What is the exact command and response of the speaker every time you ask it to set a timer?

Let's go ahead and check this link and try the commands to see if it works.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Juni

I have a Google Home Mini in my kitchen, but I use it to play music for maybe a couple of hours max, so I wouldn't know if it's having that issue. I did tell that speaker last week to set a timer and the one in the bedroom set instead. I was in the kitchen, so I'm not sure how that happened.

The command I use is, "Ok Google, set a sleep timer for 8 hours." The response is, "Bedroom speaker will stop playing in eight hours." But it never actually plays for 8 hours when I have cast a song from my phone to the nest mini.

Hi jmn1,

Thanks for the details you provided. We’d be happy to look into this for you. Try these commands and observe if it will make a difference.

Set sleep timer by duration:

"Play music, artist, genre or playlist for <duration>”

“Stop music, artist, genre or playlist in <duration>”

“Stop playing in <duration>”

Set sleep timer by time:

"Play music, artist, genre or playlist until <time>"

"Stop music, artist, genre or playlist at <time>"

“Stop playing at <time>”

If you will experience the same, you can do a full reset and set up your Nest Mini as a new device then observe. Check the step below.

On the side of your device, switch the mic off. The lights will turn orange. Press and hold the center of the Nest Mini, where the lights are on top. After 5 seconds, your device will begin the factory reset process. Continue to hold for about 10 seconds more, until a sound confirms that the device is resetting.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni,

Unfortunately the device never can find the sleep sound I am asking it to play, even when using the prompts you suggest, so I always have to cast it then set a sleep timer.

The device is brand new. I bought it and set it up originally on 11/25/2022. There should be no reason at all I would have to reset it this soon.

Like I said previously, it is apparent the device doesn't work well when casting music to it for longer than a couple hours and may need some more work from the development team. I have found a solution with using the pre-installed sleep sounds. It would be nice to have more to choose from though, like the Echo Dot does.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

In the last few days using the command 'stop playing in 'X' minutes has stopped working. I get the response back that the music will stop as per the command , but it never does. Have used this command for over a year and never has a problem, but now it does not work. This is on 2 Google Nest Audio (2nd gen) set up as a stereo pair. I have also noticed that the firmware has very recently updated to version 324896 that may have been coincidental but can't be sure.

Any advice would be helpful.

This started happening to me recently as well.  I have several different devices(orig Home, minis, and Hub), and it doesn't work on any of them.  Rebooting the device didn't help.

Decided to factory reset both devices and went through the whole process of setting them up again from scratch. Unfortunately turned out to be a complete waste of time since it is still not working.

Thank you for this update! Saved me time. I'm having the same issue - no changes on my end and no fixes have worked. 😭😭😭

I am having the same problem.stop aying in x minutes worked fine until a few days ago. Reset and reboot haven't solved problem. Can anyone help? I really appreciate this function in the night when I need only a selected number of minutes of radio to help get to sleep

Unfortunately, it appears that a number of people are experiencing this problem, as there are now a few other threads also reporting this error. I ended up going on to the chat line about the problem and it seems that there is a fault at googles end on this, that they are looking into. It may possibly be to do with the latest firmware update that has rolled out recently.

Personally as a temporary measure since I use this function late at night when I'm going to bed, e.g. gentle music to nod off to, I ended up setting up a short routine with just one command of 'Stop playing' with a daily starter time of around 1:30 am to turn off the music. Certainly not perfect, but better than nothing.

I know that this issues has been known for a number of days (3-5). Yet I have noticed that a firmware update was issued yesterday 13th Dec and the sleep function is still not working on both my 1st & 2nd gen hubs. All my hubs have the current firmware versions: 8.20220713.2.194059 (1st gen) and 1.56.324896(2nd gen). Getting a bit confused and frustrated now.

Same here, all my 3 google speakers, 2 nest audios (stereopair) and home mini stopped fulfilling sleep timer command. On my "set a sleep timer for 15 minutes" it replies "Nest will stop playing in 15min" and eventually nothing happens and music keeps playing (((, but it used to be working like a charm. Please help!

When going to bed, I always ask Google Home to "shuffle < playlist> for X minutes". Google Home responds "ok, shuffling <playlist>. Google Home will stop playing in X minutes".

However, in the last week, it did not stop playing.

Is this an issue people have recently encountered?

Thanks in advance for the help

Sebastien

Lots of other reports and threads about this problem that has started happening about a week ago. Apparently google are looking into it, hopefully.

Closest workaround, but certainly not a solution is to set up a routine with just one command of 'stop playing' and set an activation starter to execute daily at say 1am or whatever time suits you. then you can leave the music on and it will then turn off when the activation time is reached.

Thank you very much Kadven! Sorry that I only had a cursory look and did not see an open thread on that (except some old threads). Hopefully this will be solved quickly.

Thanks again and have a good day!

I have the same problem. I brought 2 nest hub and 1 nest mini on black Friday. For the first days the sleep function was perfect and then it stopped functioning.

I issue the command to play X fit Y minutes and Google verbally confirms that it will do exactly this. But it does not stop.

Different devices, different accounts, different WiFi networks, set up on different phones. All three speakers same problem.

Hi all,

There is a known issue with the timers/sleep timers and routines. Hopefully the Google Home and Google Assistant teams can get a fix out soon.

Is there a master thread that I can watch with more information?

Hi Jill,

Thanks a lot for your response!

There is a small difference between that thread and this one, in that in our current thread, the issue is that Google Home says that it will actually stop, and just does not. In the thread that you linked to, the assistant actually reports an error.

Same here, I get a response on all three devices, it verbally confirms what I asked it to do, but does not do it.

Good point and I have made sure to escalate and the team is aware of these sleep timer and routine related posts.

Same here. I play ocean sounds at night for white noise and saying "hey google play ocean sounds for 7 hours" used to work but now it just never shuts off. I don't understand how this product seems to get dumber with every update.

Some have but most used the Bedtime Routine created by Google. It has Sleep sounds selections loaded and it says at the top of that section that the sound you choose will stop automatically. After that stopped working, everyone has tried to create a custom routine a bit differently. Most of those also stopped working.

This same issue is happening on all of my Google Nest devices. None of the nest displays or the next speakers will shut off when we set a sleep timer or ask it to stop playing after x minutes. I've done a factory reset of all devices. This didn't help.

The “sleep timers” on all 5 of my Home and Nest Mini’s have quit working suddenly at the same time about a week ago! Everything sets up right and confirms the speaker will stop playing at my set time/duration. They (I tried one at a time) NEVER shut off. Tried everything including resetting them all to factory even though I knew it was not an individual speaker when they all quit. I can’t find anything on the web about having the same problem that started recently. Before this, barely a hiccup in years of owning. Any idea?

EDIT……Opened a new Gmail account, reinstalled speakers……ALL IS GOOD!

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting and apologies for the delayed response.

@Dfed, it's great to hear you've fixed your concern about your timer not working by using a new Gmail account. Thank you for posting it here in the Community.

@808IUFan, are you still having the same concern? Have you tried the step provided above?

Keep me posted.

As I have said a million times, there are many work arounds. I have my own adding a manual text action as the last step to "play country nights for 60 minutes on living room speaker." That does NOT fix the issue with a stock routine (in the new version you changed the name to Automations) that still to this day GOOGLE says "Choose which sounds to hear while you're falling asleep. These sounds will stop automatically." GOOGLE says that. THAT is what I want to happen. Anyone who creates a new email account for this must have not had that email long and it's a throway. I want it to work for this automation. I have Google Fi so my phone number is attached to this email. I can't create a new email to fix one routine (automation) and have to move my Pixel Phone, YouTube, GoogleTV, Email, Calendar, Maps, Trips, Notes, Drive, and everything else associated with this email to a new one. You guys HAVE to be on drugs to even suggest that to ME. I have a good mind to file a complaint with the BBB because of some of these solutions. FIX THE ISSUE!Screenshot_20221101-111743.png

Hi 808IUFan,

I'm sorry that you had to go through this and I understand how you feel. The reason for the use of a new account is to see if it works and to narrow things down. Could you tell me what Nest speakers you have? If more than one, let’s go ahead and factory reset just one of your Nest speakers to revert it back to its default and original settings. Here's how. Setting it back up is a must. From there, enable a sleep sound to test it out and tell me how it goes.

Thanks,

Dan
