Cannot Cast to Chromecast Google TV HD from Ethernet wired desktop PC Chrome

Hi,

I've recently bought a Chromecast Google TV HD. I configured the new Chromecast and started using it.
Using the remote works the different apps work perfectly fine. Using my Android phone to send Youtube videos, for example, works perfectly fine too.

But trying to Cast a tab or screen from my desktop PC does not work. The new Chromecast does not appear when I click in the Cast icon in my Chrome browser.

- The desktop PC is wired through Ethernet cable to the network, it does not have wifi.
- The Chromecast is connected to my Wifi Network, wifi 5.
- The Chromecast is close enough to the router, as reproducing content sent from the phone works really fast.
- My Chrome browser in my desktop PC has version 120.0.6099.110, the last one.
- I have been using a Chromecast 1st generation until three days ago, and I was able to cast perfectly fine from this exact desktop PC with the same browser, to the Chromecast 1st generation three days ago.

Would you be able to help me solving that?
Am I supposed to be able to send from my computer even if it's wired through Ethernet cable?

Thank you for your help

I have the same issue.  Ever since the Chrome browser was updated, I am unable to find my Google Smart TV (which is connected via ethernet) when casting a tab/screen from desktop PC.  I had no issues prior to the Chrome browser update, so I am pretty sure the issue is the Chrome browser.  I have no issues casting to it via apps such as YouTube.

In case it might help, I have been able to make it work. Not sure if it's a coincidence or not. But I restarted the Chromecast (not a clean restart to stock, just a "Restart" from the System options). You might try it. I also disabled my extensions in Chrome, but I think that didn't affect it.
Anyway, I hope I don't have to restart it very often to make it work.

Thx, mine works now too. I just restarted the TV (built in chromecast) by unplugging it. I think that was the solution as well and not the other settings I played with.

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting and for being a step ahead of us. I’m glad that this has been sorted out. Basic troubleshooting, such as a reboot or restart, can really yield surprising results. Thanks for sharing here. Let us know if you have other questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi Kimy,

The Chromecast is failing again. With my phone I can always send Youtube videos easily to the Chromecast, it always works.

But it's very frequent that I cannot cast from the Chrome browser from my computers: I cannot do it neither from a desktop computer connected by cable, nor from a laptop connected to the same wifi as the Chromecast. I cannot send a tab to the Chromecast from any of them. When clicking in the Cast button, the Chromecast icon doesn't appear.

After a restart of the Chromecast, the Chromecast icon appears again in the Chrome browser (same behavior in both computers) and I can use it again.
But I restarted the Chromecast yesterday and it's failing again. It's like it needs a restart really frequently, even several days in a row.

What happens with this version of the Chromecast? I was using Chromecast version 1 weeks ago, and it worked perfectly in the same network with the same computers, no restarts needed in months.

Please, let me know if you have any advice or diagnostic about this.

Thank you!

Hi Pablof,

Thanks for sharing this. It’s quite bizarre since the Chromecast device seems to work with its own functions using the remote and casting from smartphones. The only difficulty seems to appear when casting from computers. The only way to cast to a Chromecast device using computers is via the Chrome browser. I suggest you give our friends at the Google Chrome Help Community a shout. They may know a particular setting that can be toggled in Chrome://flags, or they may have a workaround for this. Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Kimy

Hi Kimy,

I posted there some weeks ago:
https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/252316022/problem-when-casting-to-new-chromecast-google-tv-...
But I got no answer.

It seems other users have this problem, this is generalized.

I think it's more related to the Chromecast as after a restart of the Chromecast, it will work for some hours / at least one projection. But on the next day, the chromecast will not appear in the Chrome Cast menu, and it will need a new restart to appear again.

Something is wrong with the Chromecast. I think it might be worth to investigate.

I have the old Chromecast (1st generation) and the new Chromecast Google TV in two different rooms of my house. It's funny that the old Chromecast (first generation) always appears in the Cast menu in Chrome, while the newest one needs a restart to appear in the Cast devices in Chrome.

For the record, I asked for a change in the store that I bought it. Both Chromecasts work the same way.

Kimy, is it possible that this might be investigated? Please, let us know if it would be possible to check something. Maybe they could work in some future firmware update to check on this.
Thank you for your help!

The new chrome cast (the one with the remote controll) does not allow to be cast to from windows 11 chrome browser. The older version simply works and still does. I can cast from the browser (tab or screen) with the old version.  The new version chrome cast device does never appear as a casting device. I only can cast youtube, which is handled differently, because the playing request is just hand over (no streaming form computer takes place, as the chromecast directly casts from youtube).
But I still want to cast the screen on my pc to this device.
Please note, that the old previous version of google chrome cast (the one that does not have the remote and no google-tv) is working! And therefore it has nothing to do with the browser version or so.
Casting the screen from Android is working, but this could be a different casting protocol.

Please reactivate this feature (miracast), because I bought it, to have a better device than before, but now it does not allow casting from pc screen or tab at all. And I don't like to always replace the new chromecast against the old one, just for casting.

Casting directly from windows 11 built-in cast is also not working. device is simply not found!!!!
And PLEASE move the casting button back to the main menu, it is absolutely not intuitive to find it in some subdirectories of the menu (below casting)

I agree with this. Never had problem with older Chrome browser.  It's tiring to have to keep resetting my Smart TV in order to find the device in the chrome tab.
