Casting video from Google photos can no longer fast forward or rewind video, doesn't show timestamp

Jmwbama311

I used to be able to control playback of videos from Google photos (fast forward, rewind) as well as it would display the status of where I was viewing within the video- as in I could see that I was viewing footage from the 3:19 mark of say a 10 minute video. Now I have no control of playback of the video being casted as well as there's no way to know where I am at within the video. I used to be able to do all these things but I suspect an update took away these capabilities- Why? I want these features to return.

Hi there,

Thanks for posting here in the community! I'm sorry to hear you're having an inconvenience controlling video playback in Google Photos. I'd be happy to help!

To better assist you, I'd like to ask a few questions:

  • What is the model of your Nest device?
  • Are you having this difficulty controlling the panel from the video feed on the Nest device itself or when viewing the feed through the Google Photos app?
  • Does this situation happen with another app, like your phone's gallery app?

In the meantime, I suggest the following:

  • Make sure you have the latest versions of the Google Home app, your phone's software, and the Google Photos app.
  • Perform a reboot on your Nest device. You can find instructions in the following article: Reboot your Chromecast device.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

This seems to be happening with all android devices, using the Google photos app, And casting to the Chromecast or Google TV. And it's also happening when everything is updated to the latest software.

Following, I'm having the same issue. Only happens with Google Photos, not other apps. Everything is up to date, and I can't control things with my phone or with the remote. Phone just shows 0:00 as the video length and gives no options to move forward or back in the video.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for following up. I'm sorry to hear you're still unable to control the videos from the Google Home app. I truly appreciate all the efforts made so far.

I'd like to ask the following questions:

  • Have you ever been able to cast videos from Google Photos before?
  • Is this situation happening only with a specific video, or does it occur with all videos?
  • What Chromecast model are you using?

Let's try some troubleshooting steps:

  • Restart your phone. A simple reboot can often resolve temporary glitches.
  • Reinstall the Google Photos and Google Home apps. Reinstalling these apps can sometimes fix permission issues.
  • Try a different phone: If possible, try casting from another phone with the Google Photos and Google Home apps installed and the same Google account.

If these steps don't resolve the situation, consider performing a factory reset on your Chromecast. You can find instructions in the following article: How to factory reset your Chromecast.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi Jennifer,

I did all of these steps before even writing in the forum. The issues persist.

My partner uses an iphone and is able to cast from Google photos and control the timestamp with no issue. I use an Android and cannot.

Hi @Alexbluev,

Thanks for confirming. I apologize for the inconvenience of casting the Google Photos videos with your Android device.

Sometimes the phone's software version may not be compatible with the Google Home app's requirements. In this case, I'd suggest the following steps:

  • You can try casting the Google Photos app from another Android device to see if the inconvenience is specific to your device or with Android devices.
  • Enable casting permissions. Go to your phone's Settings > Apps & Notifications > Google Photos and ensure casting permissions are enabled.

I also recommend reaching out to our friends at the Google Photos Community. They should be able to help you with the casting inconvenience you're experiencing with Google Photos.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

I'm having the same issue. Same phone I've had all along (Google pixel pro 6) same Chromecast. I've had literally the only one I've ever owned.... All of a sudden casting photos does not show any slider control on my phone anymore for controlling the video position, so it's completely useless now. It zeros out the start and end times and the slider can't be moved. Obviously something is wrong because there's several people experiencing the same issue, probably after some botched update. I'm a software engineer. A very good one. I know when something's broken.

If I had to take a wild guess, I would say that this was a regression of some kind introduced along with the introduction of the new features. Ability to cast from specific windows instead of just your entire Android screen. Something got messed up in the casting subsystem.

In fact, now that I think about it, if you want an incredible workaround for this. Literally just used the screencast feature on your Android phone and cast the Google photos app with it. Not only do you get your video controls back, you can zoom in on images and it's way smoother and faster than the dedicated cast feature within the app itself that is now severely crippled and could never zoom in on photos.  FFS.

Same problem here. Go back to an old version of Google photos and it will work again. So it's really a Google photos thing, not device specific. I own a galaxy s21

How do I go back to an older version of Google photos that allows these functions to work? Like which version number and steps to uninstall and reinstall old version of g photos?

Thanks, I had already done this as soon as I found out it was an issue with the newer version. I appreciate the assistance though.

I've been having the same issue. Good to know it's not just me.

Same problem on my pixel 7pro. Thought Google might at least make sure their own devices functioned correctly! I'm going to have to buy an iPhone shortly if this is not sorted (along with the other phones on my business plan). Appalling. Get it sorted!

Works BUT NOT with videos in locked folder, where the problem persists (IOS).
