I have just put my phone back to 1st of march due to me restarting my Chromecast.

I then went to home and reinstalled my Chromecast which it did it then updated itself and I now have a fully working Chromecast why Google never said to do this I don't know so there you go fixed and it does it all itself once connected back to the internet.

I was told you couldn't use the same phone to cast once you change the date? I only have one phone

Just change the date back once it starts downloading the update

I've done the factory reset, tried to add it as a new device on google home, changed the date back to 1st of March on my phone, it recognises the chromecast but it won't connect to the Internet and my the app thinks the chromecast isn't nearby!?

I can confirm that Colin's trick works - thanks Colin! After changing the date on your phone, use the Home app to discover your 'new' Chromecast, and run through the wizard to set it up. When you have finished the wizard, you won't be able to connect to your Chromecast in the Home app, this is normal as it is still needing the update from Google. Just leave it, and after 5 - 10 mins it should have downloaded the update and fixed itself. You will then be able to connect to it in the Home app and use it!
