(Noting that for "platform" I selected android, I don't understand the three choices as this device is not really any of them)
I have had a chromecast with Google TV for the last 2 years, and have been using it on my Toshiba 40e220u TV with no problems.
Suddenly within the last 3 weeks, I have been having a frustrating problem. When I turn the TV on using the chromecast remote, 4/5x that I do it, I get a black screen and the remote is unresponsive for 15s. I can then turn off the TV. If I try turning the TV back on, sometimes it will work, booting up my Google TV, sometimes I get the same black screen and need to repeat 3-4x.
The one solution is if I go to the TV while it is on, unplug the chromecast HDMI cable and plug it back in, it will usually work. But this is an annoying fix that I do not want long term.
*Important to note that I have tried using different HDMI inputs, there is nothing wrong with the HDMI based on the response to other devices (e.g. my computer). I have also tried updating to the most recent software.
Please help, my wife and I have loved the chromecast for the past 2 years and this new issue is becoming a real annoyance.

Hey there nlitvak,
I apologize for the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that black screen issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, as I know this issue would bug me as well. First, does your TV have any HDMI-CEC settings or any Power Saving settings that may affect the Chromecast? I know my Vizio TV had some power saving settings that would cause my Chromecast to not wake up properly. I would also check the wall outlet the Chromecast is plugged into, and maybe change it if it's not receiving sufficient power.
I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!
Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran, thank you for responding.
I have checked and unfortunately there are no power saving settings on the TV that are currently on, so that is not the issue.
The wall outlet that the Chromecast is plugged into is also not the problem, it has been working with no issues. On the note of power, I will mention that when I the black screen issue occurs, I have checked the chromecast itself and I can see the back light is on, indicating that it is receiving power. It just does not turn on for some reason.
I was having some mild success a few days ago where it was working regularly, but it is back to the same issue, somewhere between every 1/3 to every 3/4 times it will not work, and I will need to unplug and replug the HDMI to get the screen to pop up.
Hoping you have some other ideas, thank you!
Noah

Hey there nlitvak,
Once again, I apologize for my late responses. I really appreciate your patience with me! We can check for a few more things here. Go ahead and see if replacing the HDMI cable with a different one helps. If not, try changing the HDMI port that the Chromecast is plugged into. If the problem persists, try testing the Chromecast on another TV if you are able to. That way, we can narrow down the issue to the TV, or to the Chromecast device.
I look forward to hearing from you again!
Thank you,
Jeran

I appreciate the thoughts thus far, but to no avail.
I have tried every manner of troubleshooting, and I am still having the same problem originally described -> turn the TV on and 1/5 times there is a black screen making it seem like the chromecast is off, even though the power on the chromecast is on. If I turn it on/off again, it might show up, or not. Unplugging the HDMI cable from the chromecast and plugging it back in works most of the time, but obviously this is an annoying solution.
The things that I have tried which have not working
- updating the chromecast to newest software
- switching HDMI ports (I cannot switch the cable because this is a chromecast with google TV so it has a built in HDMI cable)
- changing power inputs
- changing TVs (however I will note that there have never been and are still no issues with the primary TV used when using HDMI for other devices such as connecting to my computer or game consoles)
- doing a FULL FACTORY RESET on the chromecast
- as mentioned previously, no power issues or anything
- I will also note again that I have been using this same chromecast for over 2 years now and this problem only started a couple months ago, it is quite frustrating.
Please let me know if there are other solutions, or if it possible for a replacement as there seems to be a problem with this device.
Thank you kindly,
Noah

Hi Muddi,
I was a little unsure as the form was basically just explaining my concern, which I believe I did here already?
Anyway, I filled it out and mostly just copied the information from my last post. Please let me know if that is okay.
Thank you
Noah

Hey there nlitvak,
Thank you for filling out that form! You should have someone from Chromecast Support reach out to you via e-mail, so keep an eye out for that. It may take a few days, as they are catching up a bit from the holidays, so be aware of that. In the meantime, unless you have any more questions or concerns for us, we'll go ahead and lock this thread in 24 hours.
Best regards,
Jeran

I just started experiencing this same exact issue on my Hisense TV. (Always woke up with powering on the TV) Now I have to hit power again to turn tv back off, then on again to get the Google tv to wake.

Hey there TechieDJ,
That's no good to hear. In that case, would you be able to fill out the same form that Muddi provided to have you get in contact with Chromecast Support?
Best regards,
Jeran

Sorry, I just submitted the form. It was acting normal for a few days but did it again last night. Kinda like it was having trouble doing the hdcp handshake and negotiating HDR/Dolby vision and gave up then showed No signal on the TV. I've also discovered it's better to just click the 'select' circle on the remote and let the dongle wake the TV rather than using the remote power button wich turns the TV on first I believe.

Hey there TechieDJ,
Thank you for filling out that form! You should have someone from Chromecast Support reach out to you within a few days via email, so feel free to continue the conversation with them. I'm glad you were able to find a workaround, at the very least!I would bring that up with Chromecast Support to see if they are able to figure out what's happening there, though I do think you're on the right track with it having a HDCP handshake issue.
In the meantime, unless you have any more questions for us here on the forum, I'll go ahead and lock the thread in 24 hours.
Best regards,
Jeran
