Nest camera feed closes after ~20 seconds on Google TV Streamer

CalValX

I’m having an issue viewing my Nest camera feeds through the Google Home interface on my Google TV Streamer.

Previously, I could open a Nest camera from the Google Home side menu and the camera feed would remain on the screen for as long as I wanted. Recently, that behavior has changed. Now the camera stream only stays open for about 20 seconds before the screen automatically returns to whatever content I was watching before selecting the camera.

Additionally, the Google Home side menu itself now disappears after roughly 20 seconds, whereas before it would stay open until I manually exited it.

I’m trying to determine if this behavior is:

  • an intentional change,
  • a known bug, or
  • something wrong with my device configuration.

Troubleshooting steps I’ve already tried:

  • Removed and re-linked Google Home from the Google TV Streamer
  • Confirmed the issue persists across multiple cameras

I have not factory reset the Google TV Streamer yet, as that would require setting up all apps and configurations again. I’d like to avoid that if possible unless it’s confirmed to fix the issue.

Has anyone else experienced this, or is there a known fix?

Hi @CalValX,

Thanks for posting in the community. I understand that your Nest camera feeds and the Google Home menu are automatically closing after only 20 seconds when viewing them on your Google TV Streamer and returning to the previous screen or content you were watching. I know this situation must be concerning, as previously, you could view your cameras' feed on your TV for as long as you wanted. I appreciate the detailed information you've shared so far and your efforts in troubleshooting. No worries, let's work together to get this resolved. To help with that, I have a few questions for you:

  • What is your Google TV Streamer firmware version? You can check out the following article to see how to find your device's firmware version.
  • When the live feed closes on your Google TV Streamer, is there any error message or code shown?
  • Have you made any changes to your Nest Cameras setup recently?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Cheers,
Jonathan

  • System firmware version: UTTK.250729.004

           Cast firmware version: 3.72.446070

  • No error message or code shown.
  • No changes to my Nest Cameras setup recently.

I am having same problem. I have Nest cams and Wyze cams. No cam will stay open for more than 20 seconds

sync of cams nor unplug of Google TV fixed problem.  This problem has been occurring for over a month.

I have an escalated case open on this With Google Senior Technical support case id is 5-7748000040849. Others may want to reference if they are opening a call on this.

I am current on Google TV software.  I have spoken with Google support, they opened a ticket for me on this about 2 weeks ago.

I am having the same issues. I don't know about firmware version when viewing from the Google TV, but no error message is displayed. When this issue started, we made sure the TVs were updated and reset them, as well as restarted them.

Hi all,

Thank you for your responses and the time you took to share the information I requested. To continue troubleshooting this behavior, please try the following:

  • Ensure your Google TV Streamer and your Nest cameras are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Try using a voice command to ensure everything is properly recognized by the system. Say, "Hey Google, sync my devices" or "Hey Google, sync my cameras."
  • Try power cycling your Google TV Streamer by unplugging it from the power source, waiting for at least 2 minutes, and then plugging it back in.

@CalValX, could you please tell me what type of Chromecast you have? You can check the following article to identify the model: Chromecast & Google TV Streamer specifications.

Please keep me updated.

Regards,
Jonathan

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies. I understand that you're having difficulties viewing the live feed of your cameras using your TV. To keep investigating this issue further, I have a few questions for you:

  • When did the issue first start? Was there any recent update on the Google TV Streamer or Google Home app before the behavior change?
  • Does this happen to all Nest cameras linked to the account, or only a specific camera?
  • Have you tried accessing the camera feed using a different device (e.g., a mobile phone via the Google Home app) to check if the stream remains active?
  • Does the issue persist when casting or viewing the camera via voice command (e.g., using Google Assistant)?
  • Is the Google TV Streamer connected to a stable internet connection, and are there any observed connectivity issues?
  • Have there been any recent changes to account settings, device permissions, or home structure in the Google Home app?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

  • For me Id estimate this began 4-6 weeks ago.  Im unsure of a recent update as I believe they’re automatically applied.
  •  All camera’s though I will say I can randomly get it to stay on after multiple tries, though this is becoming more rare.
  • The camera feed works and stays open on my other devices, which are the iPhones and the iPad viewing through the Google Home app. Problems are only with the Google TV Streamer.
  • I personally do not use voice commands, I get to the Home side-menu utilizing the star button shortcut.
  • Connection is stable via Wi-Fi and I do not have an issue streaming video from other apps.
  • No recent changes for me personally, I feel like one day I just noticed the camera feed would go away. Previously it never went away unless I manually press the back button.

Thanks Jonathon.  Case ID 5-7748000040849

I am also having this issue and it seemed to correlate with a firmware update that changed the menu/home screen orientation.

Have you tried the Gemini or Google Assistant commands. They seem to be working for me and keeping the cam  active.

I don't understand why, but your solution worked. Using the voice Google assistant, I can stream the camera and the feed stays active. Prior, when using the Quick Setting -> Google Home -> Select Camera - the feed stops after 20 seconds and returns to the main TV Menu.

After having entered the camera stream via Google Assistant - exiting, and then reentering via the Quick Settings/Google Home - the stream stays active.

Tell me how that works!?

thanks for the tip!

I spent about four hours on chat with Google about this, got passed around to seven different "specialists" and got told to contact the TV manufacturer (the TVs are Google TVs and cameras are Google Nest Cameras). The manufacturer of the TV said that they don't work for the purpose of displaying live camera feeds. Interesting response as I have been using them for that exact purpose since September 2025. All of this to say, there is currently no resolution to my issue.

Have you tried the Gemini or Google Assistant commands. They seem to be working for me and keeping the cam  active.   I cannot get it to stay using Google Home menu on Google TV but this does seem to work.

Hi all,

Thanks for posting in the community and for sharing that additional information. I understand that using Gemini or Google Assistant commands to stream your Nest Cameras is working for some of you. While the streaming camera functionality is working as intended with the current timeout, I see how having a continuous view would be beneficial for monitoring your home. Since there isn't a setting to change this duration at the moment, I recommend submitting a feature request directly through your device. To do this, please use the feedback option on your Google TV Streamer. While submitting feedback doesn’t guarantee that a specific feature will be implemented, your input is incredibly valuable. It helps us develop new features and ensure our devices are meeting your needs.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Is this really a "feature"?

Prior to my TV's firmware update, the stream stayed active when entering through Quick Setting -> Google Home. Now I can only access the continuous stream via Google Assistant. Does it not point to the same thing on the back end?

Exactly. Everything worked fined up until it started doing this. Seems like a bug from the previous update.

I can confirm the camera stream will stay up when using a voice command to view the camera via Google assistant but this isn't anything but a workaround since getting to it the other way and it staying up like it used to should work as well.

Confused. So we need to put in a feature request for what used to work?
I will do this but really? This worked.

This is happening to me too after a firmware upgrade. The funny thing is in this forum feed, support folks keep asking the same questions and not providing any real fix. I feel like they are skirting around the issue. Good Job Google Support.
