Solution if you reset your device.

Set your phone date back before 7 mar 2025.

Open the Home app and configure the Chromecast.

The Chromecast will connect to wifi and update.

Set your phone date to auto again.

Test if it works, if not, then give it more time to update and try again.

Mine is working again and I was one who factory reset, so I'm just here to let others know who are in the position I was in: do the trick others have mentioned of setting your phone clock back to be able to at least get it back online. It won't work for streaming with your phone clock set incorrectly, though. The other services like Hulu and YouTube won't work with an incorrect clock. So after connecting, set your phone back to normal. I just let the Chromecast stay connected to wifi and within a day Google has pushed the fix out to my device. Works as well as it always did now.

Thx, a lot. It also worked for me.

Set the date to March 5, and then you can setup the chromecast.

Just fixed now. I did factory reset and did't work without possibilty to teconfigure it.

I force date on the smartphone to first of march, after that I was able to reconfigure it with app home. Now (after the update) is still working fine.

Everytime that I try to connect my Chromecast 2 Gen with Google home it Appears " your Chromecast could not be authenticated, visit mobile app for support "

Or maybe because it's to old? I have been with it for 8 years

Maybe it's fair

Your Chromecast 2nd Gen is quite old (released in 2015), but it should still work as Google hasn't officially discontinued support for it yet. However, the "could not be authenticated" error might be due to several reasons:

Possible Causes & Fixes:

  1. Outdated Firmware

    • Try resetting your Chromecast by holding the button on the device until the LED blinks.
    • Reconnect it to Wi-Fi and check if it updates automatically.
  2. Wi-Fi Compatibility Issues

    • Chromecast 2 only supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi.
    • If you've recently updated your router, make sure it's broadcasting a compatible frequency.
  3. Google Home App Issues

    • Ensure you’re using the latest version of the Google Home app.
    • Try reinstalling the app and attempting setup again.
  4. Device Authentication Failure

    • Make sure your Google account is signed in properly.
    • If using a different Google account than before, try setting it up with the original one.
  5. Network Firewall or Security Settings

    • Some routers have AP isolation or guest mode enabled, which can block Chromecast.
    • Disable these settings in your router's admin panel.
  6. Check Google’s Support for Older Devices

    • If Google has discontinued support, authentication may not work.
    • Check Google’s official support page for any announcements.

Is It Time for an Upgrade?

If you’ve tried everything and it still doesn’t work, 8 years is a long time for a tech device. You might want to upgrade to a Chromecast with Google TV, which has better performance and long-term support.

Try another method.

Just change your smart phone/iphone/tab date to 1st March 2025 and then connect chromecast..after connecting to Chromecast it will load an update for Chromecast and will connect to your wifi then you will be able to watch anything you want.i tried on my side and its working for me.

I fixed the same problem for my Gen 1 device with the following steps. Since the authentication depends on certificates, I thought that it was because of the certificate signing date causing authentication issues.

1. Factory reset to the chromecast

2. Install Google Home on any mobile device.

3. Set the date of the mobile device (the one you installed the Google Home app) before March 7 (My device stopped working on that day). The date may depend on your device's manufacturing date. So I recommend setting the date at least 1 year before.

4. Proceed with setup instructions from the Google Home app. Fingers crossed. 🤞🏻

5. After you successfully set up the device, and establish the connection. You can revert back your mobile device date.

What’s up with the “don’t factory reset your device” thing ?!

It’s the first thing that the Google help page asks you to do when you try to troubleshoot your device and now it causes more problems with already broken device ?!

It's been a week that we've all been patient! However, NO improvement! If that problem can't be fixed, just let us know ASAP! We have other options, I'm thinking about switching to ROKU.
