Stuttering / Frame Drops / Whatever on Disney+

This issue has persisted for years as apparent by different blog posts, articles, etc looking back.

In the past, I have had to disable HW Overlay and that could fix it for a time, then have to reset and do it again periodically. Now it is happening on more content without a fix.

For example, I tried to watch Muppets Christmas Carol on Disney+ on 12.24.2025, and unlike in the past where there would be a frame drop every several seconds, it was now every second. I purchased directly through Google TV and watched there with 0 issues. (That was on a Chromecast with Google TV (HD) ) Right now, I am trying to watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars on my Google TV Streamer, and have the same issue. I don't know how to put pressure on a company as big as Disney to fix their issue. It is ridiculous to continue for years. I have spent hours troubleshooting. If google could put pressure on them that would be great. I don't want to have to leave the android TV platform...

Hello, Thank you for the detailed explanation. You’re not alone—this has been a long-standing issue on Android/Google TV devices, particularly with the Disney+ app. Since the problem does not occur when content is purchased and played directly through Google TV, this strongly suggests an app-level playback or rendering issue, not a hardware problem. At this point, the best steps are: Report the issue directly through the Disney+ app feedback and their support channels Submit a report via Google TV / Android TV feedback, referencing that the issue has persisted for years and affects multiple Google TV devices Include that disabling HW Overlay only provides a temporary workaround While Google cannot directly force a fix, multiple detailed reports from users do help escalate the issue between Google and Disney. Your feedback is important, especially since it impacts platform loyalty. Hopefully this gets proper attention—no user should have to troubleshoot the same playback issue for years.

There is no other option than to report the issue to Disney+ at help.disneyplus.com
