Nest Cam 1.69 Update ruined night vision even more

SuperAdam

So Google updated their nest cams AGAIN and further ruined Night vision, day time HDR got a bit better but nowhere near as good as it was with 1.65 software, I about had it with Google, look at these picture and tell me if I'm imagining things, the picture on top is the new 1.69 software and the one on the bottom is the 1.67 software just a few minutes before the update, look how fuzzy and grainy everything is with the update, it's like everything is out of focus, STOP MESSING WITH THE CAMERAS GOOGLE, we paid money for this, it's literally unusable at night now.

Hey everyone,

We recently began to roll out a software update for Nest Cam (battery), Nest Doorbell (battery), and Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) that addresses an issue where some users experienced decreased video quality when operating in low light environments. This update will be rolling out to all users over the coming weeks.

Best,
Edmond

This is my issue I mentioned before, if someone gets on your property at night you won't be able to see any details of that person and good luck having Google admit any fault if this ever happens, they just keep making these cameras worse.

Same issue here. Silly me, I tried cleaning the lens as  I thought there was condensation on the lens at night since its starting to get cold. But it's affected all my cameras and my doorbell as well, night time image quality is horrible. please bring back update 1.65.

also, don't you guys test the updates internally before rolling it out? like whaaattt.

I can’t get anyone at Google to give me an ETA for a fix. Called support to ask for a refund. They put me on hold with the store and hung up on me. Doesn’t look like anyone at Google cares. Time to shop for other cameras. Any recommendations?

Not that there is any sort of ECD in their response, but I suspect this is the closest we’ll get:

Refund?  Class Action Suit?   Seems that this update should have demonstrated what NOT to do, yet they (Google) released the update effectively negating what had been a good image quality for night.  Amazing how little time and attention is committed to more robust testing.  Some schlep said "sure, release it" and now we have a video/cam system that is good half the time.

Night vision on my floodlight camera is useless. So blurry and even when the floodlight comes on its no good. The latest update is to blame. Google needs to sort this out ASAP!

Even with the floodlight this is useless at night. You can't even see this guy's face!Even with the floodlight this is useless at night. You can't even see this guy's face!

Says a lot that were all having this issue and Google has zero acknowledgement of the problem. Just here's your update take it and like it.

Honestly the whole company as a hole has gone down the crapper. I honestly think they are more value in search then the smart home business and are just letting it to die out. We as customer continue to support this company. Bottom line boycotting it and looking at better options would be the easiest solution.

Worst part is we can't even pass this crap onto someone else.

I've had my outdoor cameras for about 6 months now.  I have one in the front of the house near the garage, one by the front door, and one near the back patio.  The front camera is above a carriage light which is bright and I've never needed to use the night vision. I could force it on, but in the off state, it was actually better.  The rear patio and the Front door, I have the light automated to go off at Midnight, and that was set to Auto.  All had very good and crisp focus at all times day and night. I do have the front and rear on full time power and set for max quality.

Lately in the last month or so, I have been noticing that the night time focus on all three camera are getting poor.  I got a ladder and with a micro fiber carefully cleaned the lens, which didn't help. The day time focus remains stellar.

I have no explanation why it seems the night time focus is getting progressively worse, but it's now to the point that you cannot make out a face or license plate unless you are within 6 feet, and even then it would be quite blurry.

I'm not sure if this is a result of firmware updates, Home app changes or what, but nothing I seem to do is helping.  But again, it seems like it's getting worse.  Any tips?

I have also had an issue with the Zones not working correctly since day one, but I'll create a different topic for that.

It's update 1.69 that's the issue. Came out around the end of September I think. It's Google's fault and nothing to do with your setup.

There also seems to be an issue with 1.69 where the cameras kick into night vision mode while it is still light outside- much sooner than before the update, making the issue that much worse than it would have been otherwise.

It happened to me at exactly 8:00:00pm on 9-18-23.  All was good, and then went blurry, i trouble shooted for days before finding out it was not something i did, curse you GOOGLE!

thats the day we all simultaneously got dirt on our camera lenses and our wifi signal reduced by 80%.

There is nothing you can do,this is the result of the latest firmware update 1.69, it got pushed to these cameras about 10 days ago, so our best hope is that Google sees our complaints and do something about it, the zones issue, are you not getting notifications or you can't set them up? What kind of problem are you having? I stopped getting zones notification for a whole day the other day but now they are working fine.

Having the same issue with my Google outdoor battery cam, my cam is plugged straight into a power source for 24 seven recording so all my recordings at night are just useless hopefully nobody tries to break in my car at night because I won’t be able to see their face because of how messed up the video feed is I wouldn’t be surprised if they start losing their contract with ADT,

💯. I wish you could tag ADT as they would have a bit more clout than us peasants.

This is the result of the firmware update they pushed on us a few days ago, its software 1.69, it's not you or your equipments so don't let Google gas light you into thinking it's on your end because they will.

I got this link from the Google Home group on Facebook. I will repost the link and try to tag ADT in it. I’ll even message ADT

Matthew Sullins

All of us standing together is great but ADT is a giant compared. Good thinking and hopefully it creates a ripple.

Exactly. I actually sent a direct message to ADT on Facebook messenger with this link even asking them are their customers having these issues as well. Maybe that will light a match under Google to get this resolved

Fwiw, Nestflood, I believe I've been on 1.69 much longer than you are suggesting.  I have the 30 day storage and I noticed last week this issue going back to the beginning of Sept, even the very end August.  I'm not sure when 1.69 was widely released but it's definitely been at least a month.  And yes, it's a huge issue.

The good news for me is, I bought the 3 packs from Costco, and have the original box.  If we don't get a resolution fast, they are going back.  I put up with the crappy interface with the promises that improvement were coming - that ended up being mediocre.  This focus issue is a deal breaker.  I can easily go back to Arlo.

I personally don’t know when the 1.69 was released I do know issues started a few months back when it came to the contrast but the fix was turning off night vision and everything was terrific but all of a sudden what two weeks ago all of us are having this issue with The video at night just pure grainy

This is absolutely ridiculous.  If this isn't fixed soon, can you imagine the amount of returns during the holiday shopping season?!  C'mon Google, make this right.

Exactly if I could sell all my Google Home devices and cameras and everything and get a decent amount to replace it all with Alexa and ring I so would But I’m so in deep in the Google ecosystem, I cannot get out of it

The title for this thread should be changed to reflect that video taken at night is bad and totally useless

RoddyDuterte

Is Google trying to hide this post? They seem to be merging threads together to keep this one hidden and prevent new ones from being created talking about this issue.

its just so confusing, all the threads getting merged and you cant keep track of what is where, even the forum has turned into a shambles never mind the quality of the cameras.

Is this an attempt to hide the multitude of forum threads so it looks like less of an issue to their google pay masters?

This wouldnt happen with Apple...

I think the biggest frustration is, I know they have a Preview Team, and I know this Preview Team submitted this issue - Which obviously, none of the folks behind this impenetrable black curtain bothered to read.

Now that they know there is a seismic problem, you would think they would automatically roll everyone back to the last stable 1.67, and go back to the drawing board.  But instead, the only logical solution in their minds is to punish us until they can get around to figuring this out.  Absolutely mind numbing.

You sir are the smartest man ever.....go get that job at Google as you'll be an asset!

Yes @ Roddy - I started a new threat titled,

Google Gen 2 Outdoor Camera night focus diminishing

which got rolled into this thread.  Clearly the title of this thread is rather vague.

Our outdoor Nest camera suddenly shows a very blurry view and cannot see anything thru the lens.  Daytime vision is totally clear.  We cleaned the lens and no help.

yes it’s happening to everyone that has that camera something to do with the recent update

Based on DMs on Twitter, ADT seemed to be aware of the issues with 1.69 and recommended waiting for the next  firmware update or calling support if necessary, while Google (@madebygoogle) will “keep us posted”:

Thought I'd gone mad. Just reinstalled all my cameras, and rebooted my mesh wifi. Then found this thread. I prefer my cameras on standard video at night rather than night mode, as it (used to) allows for better video when the security lights come on. Now it's a blurred mess and after being chased by a rogue dog last night and not being able to provide decent footage - I'm really annoyed!

The attached camera used to be crisp even in low light

Great. Now it will take months.

If history is a guide, it’ll take many months and the result will be even worse than 1.69.  Useless garbage currently,
