Nest Cam 1.69 Update ruined night vision even more

SuperAdam

So Google updated their nest cams AGAIN and further ruined Night vision, day time HDR got a bit better but nowhere near as good as it was with 1.65 software, I about had it with Google, look at these picture and tell me if I'm imagining things, the picture on top is the new 1.69 software and the one on the bottom is the 1.67 software just a few minutes before the update, look how fuzzy and grainy everything is with the update, it's like everything is out of focus, STOP MESSING WITH THE CAMERAS GOOGLE, we paid money for this, it's literally unusable at night now.

Hey everyone,

We recently began to roll out a software update for Nest Cam (battery), Nest Doorbell (battery), and Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) that addresses an issue where some users experienced decreased video quality when operating in low light environments. This update will be rolling out to all users over the coming weeks.

Best,
Edmond

Interesting question in light of their attempt at misinformation.  Google's own Support site states that 1080 only needs 3.0Mbps for the Max setting to record events:

Google Camera Bandwidth requirementsGoogle Camera Bandwidth requirements

Wow! I don't know which is worse. A Google employee who is clueless or one who spreads misinformation. Thanks for the info.

this is the same crap that they’re telling everyone they told me this I told them first of all y’all just replace this camera two days ago so I was like there’s no soft resets reset factory reset that are going to fix this issue. I was like second i’m not moving my camera. I was like my cameras been there for a year with no problem and I was like third it’s not a problem with my Internet I was like because I’m using gigabyte speeds and I’m using your mesh Wi-Fi routers after I said that they shut the hell up and started looking more into this but since you’ve posted this, I’m gonna email them back to see what’s going on cause I haven’t heard back from them in a week

I already tried all this before finding this channel. The Google tech person hasn't a clue unfortunately.

Has anyone tried letting Google tech support access your cameras, especially at night, so they can see for themselves what you're seeing? Whatever happened to the person who contacted ADT? Did they get back to you?

I was on a chat with them at night when it was having an issue and they never even asked or offered to join to view the camera. I had to send screenshots

Matthew Sullins

They used to do it all the time. Now, you have to request it.

There is no way in hell they do not know about this problem.  Just stalling while hopefully they are doing a fix.

For info guys, as of 10 minutes ago my doorbell camera is now running on 1.67 . Google have rolled back it seems it or something to do with the Sonos farce? Who knows but it's definitely on 1.67 when yesterday it was 1.69.

Screenshot_20231012_163645.jpg

just checked mine (doorbell and outdoor) and they are all on 1.69

They must be rolling back. The quality is way better already. Hopefully they keep in rolling all the way back to 1.65 which was the last time it wasn't bang average.

both my indoor camera and my indoor outdoor battery are still showing 1.69 my doorbell of course I’m using the original Nest so that operates on a totally different software. The quality on the 1.69 is still really good during the day it’s at night when it’s a big concern

Matthew Sullins

It's significantly better guys. See attached. Top imagine is right now, the "roll backed" 1.67. The bottom image is yesterday, 1.69.

It's kind of a win, yes? I mean going backwards but forwards 😆.

InCollage_20231012_185154738.jpg

I'm UK by the way.

That's some good news and a good start.  I'm not sure if those pics were totally in the dark, but certainly improved.  I just checked mine and they are still on 1.69 but will be watching closely.

Thanks for the report.

I can confirm it's totally pitch black outside.

Day time is better as well, the colours aren't overly saturated like yesterday. Basically HDR turned off I guess.

Top today, bottom yesterday.

IMG_20231012_192432.jpg

How's the daytime image? The previous 1.67 firmware was way too bright, and the colors were oversaturated and skewed.

see what I found with that update was everything was more clear during the day, and of course, at night with night vision on it was darker contrast, but what I found was if you turned off night vision at night, brighter contrast works beautifully at night. It almost look like it was still daytime but now it’s just gritty with night vision off And dark contrast with night vision on so with the 1.69 update the only way around it is to turn night vision off and if you have your camera at say the driveway I just use the driveway lights and everything stays clear I tried to post a picture, but apparently the images are too big for me to post. It exceeds the limit

Matthew Sullins

How did you manage to roll back?

He didn't.  Keep reading the thread.

Maybe with a new hardware release 🥴

Me too. All Nest second gens are still on 1.69.

I will receive mine tomorrow and will report back which software it will update to from factory.
Ordered it before I heard about the image processing issues.

If it looks as bad (1.69) I will send it back and replace it with the Aqara G4 door bell which seems to support automations within Google Home as well.

Did you grab the G4?  I have the U100 lock and was debating on pairing it.

Not yet, would also need to switch to Alexa so I can still have a live-feed when somebody is ringing the doorbell.

Seems like Google doesn't allow 3rd parties using that feature unlike Amazon.

Yep, Google is infamous for that.  You CAN link with Aqara through Google Home e.g. I can automate my door lock/voice command to lock/unlock and such but it's limited.  I do have an Aqara Hub, however, that is linked to Google via Matter.

Sheer ridiculousness! I am paying for storage subscription which Google increased $ a few weeks ago. Anyone successful in getting a refund considering the recordings are no good due to the crappy video quality?

AZguy86

me personally I haven’t asked plus, I’m on the yearly subscription plan with the 24 seven recording and I’m pretty sure Google will come up with an excuse not to even issue a partial refund. The only thing they will probably do what you can do yourself is to cancel your subscription and then the system will just refund you the remainder of that subscription

This whole situation sucks but wow the same things are being repeated from post to post.

Firmware = crap

Google = crap

I think it would be easier to just post an update when it's productive to the present issue. If anyone has any experience with 1.69 and how long it took to fix the blooming daytime issue it was months.

Riiiigghttt... So my camera is now back to 1.69 and the quality has turned sh1t again. What's going on??

InCollage_20231012_202536629.jpg

honestly man, what are Google doing. Had a glimmer of hope for a couple of hours then it's back to the crap.

What do you mean "back to 1.69"? 1.69 is the latest software, google didn't release an update after this one.

Today my camera rolled back to 1.67. Then 4hrs later went back to 1.69.

Sorry, the way the forum works makes new posts a mess to view. I commented on the thread earlier today that explains.

See I am on 1.69 and my night vision does not look like that and I’m a bit confused on how your view of your camera it’s much bigger than mine.

Matthew Sullins

Mine is doorbell, that's how the screen is different. However it was 100% on 1.67 earlier today and it was totally obvious that the quality was better. Before it seemingly got upgraded again and it turned crap again. No explanation for it, sorry guys.

So, I'm a little confused. Some forum members are reporting that there was no problem with v1.67. Others say it was crap. For me, everything went downhill AFTER v1.65. While v1.67 was improved for daytime video, nighttime is a disaster. If it's bad firmware, shouldn't everybody be experiencing the same problem?

And why would Google temporarily reverse the firmware when they've never done that before? All of this is very confusing. I really wish someone from Google would chime in.

The whole thing is just a bloody mess. I can confirm 100% that my cam reverted to 1.67 for a day before going back up to 1.69. After the shambles that is 1.69 it made 1.67 look brilliant by comparison.

I'm not doubting that it happened. It just doesn't make any sense. I guess that's par for the course for Google.

You can't put anything past Google...!

I have added the "Date Taken" tag to the screenshots for clarity, it appears bottom left.

so if 1.67 was right before 1.69 personally for me 1.67 was better than this current 1.69. Everything was a little bit brighter during the daytime, but it didn’t impact the quality of the image. Everything looked a little more crisp and clear night time when night vision turned on it was really dark contrast. I couldn’t even make out a persons face when they stared at the camera, but once you turned night vision off, everything got brighter at night and it almost looked like it was still daylight outside and you could see everything not only in color but you were able to see peoples faces but once 1.69 it kept the brightness that night but everything got fuzzy/grainy so in my opinion the only thing they need to fix and 1.69 is the grainy fuzziness at night
