Nest Cam (battery) sending unwanted notifications

MrMat
Community Member

I have set up a zone for the camera.

History and notifications are turned on.

History is on but notifications are turned off for anything outside the zone.

I am still receiving push notifications for events outside the zone.

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

While Nest strives to send customers notifications only when the camera senses important activity, false positives may occur as a natural outcome of using algorithms to process video. These algorithms learn and improve over time, limiting the number of notifications you’ll receive. I'd suggest adjusting your activity zone set up to see if that helps.

There are a few things that can trigger unwanted alerts or false positives, here are common triggers to name a few:

  • Changes in the light level
  • Shadow moving across the frame. For example, if a cloud moves in front of the sun.
  • Trees or bushes swaying near the customer’s important areas.
  • Headlights or flashing entering the field of view.

Thanks,

Archie

Thanks for the reply,

I understand that the system sometimes reports false positives. I'm quite used to it, especially on really windy days. That's not really a problem.

Getting a notification for every car that drives by the house definately is a problem.

What's worse is the notifications are from inside the zone I set up.

I even moved the zone boundary further away from the road, but it still sends notifications.

I'm in Australia, so everytime I go to check what's going on, it takes ages to load, so it gets really annoying.

The old nest camera, didn't have this sort of issue, and we could watch the live feed on our computers too. Add to that the worry that someone could just take the camera off the magnetic mount and pull the power cable out (it's only held in by a magnet as well) makes me wonder if upgrading was a good idea at all. At least the old camera had a cord hardwired in.

Upgrading to get the face recognition hasn't been good at all so far.

Hi everyone,

@aatienza thanks for your helpful response.

@MrMat I know how confusing it is for you to have this issue. To know more about this, I'd like to ask some questions: Are there other family members who can access the camera? Do they receive any notifications? Has the camera been moved recently?

Try these steps:

  • Go to your activity zone settings, you'll see the seen events. Select your preferred notification/s here.
  • Try turning on and off your "outside of zone" option to refresh the restrictions.
  • Unselect the categories (people, animals, vehicle and motion) under the "outside of zone" option if you don't want to get notifications.
  • Try removing your activity zone and add it again.

Keep me posted.

Regards,
Emerson

Thanks for the reply.

I figured why not, so I toggled all the settings for "outside of zone".

I'll try changing one thing at a time to see if anything works.

Here's a screenshot of the settings.

Hello MrMat,

Thanks for sending your screenshot. How's it going? Can you tell me the update after you toggled all the settings for "outside of zone"?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
Emerson

No difference. I've been looking carefully at the videos that are outside the zone but report inside the zone, and a few of them had car lights shining on the driveway but a lot do not seem to make any visual changes in the zone at all.

The worst (or most ironic) part is that the garbage truck (and the truck that collects the recycling) do not trigger a notification at all. At least a notification that I could take the bins back in would be useful. A car triggers it, but not a huge truck.

I also would like to know the solution so PLS don't lock this thread. 😑

At times I don't even get a notification when my mail lady walks right by my camera on her way to the mail slot which is next to my Google doorbell that is connected with my Google mesh that is warmed with the use of my Google thermostat.  😇

I don't use the zone feature.

@EmersonB I was able to fill out the form, but when it asked for the title of the forum post, I put the entire website URL in.

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Cameras-and-Doorbells/Nest-Cam-battery-sending-unwanted-notif...

Thought it might help narrow it down (there's almost 900 posts about "Nest cam battery" at the time of writing.)
