Nest Cam (battery) will not stay charged even when wired

I've had a Nest Doorbell (Battery) and a Nest Camera (Battery) installed for about 2 months now.  Both are hard wired for power.  The doorbell seems to work just fine, but the camera (battery) is going dead several times a month.  It will show that it is LIVE and shows an infinite charge level until the battery drops below around 15 percent.  Then it will continue to drain for the next day or two until it completely shuts down.  It doesn't appear to charge at all until it dies.  I've tried another power adapter with higher wattage and that makes no difference.  I've read of problems with low temperatures preventing charging, could the same be true for high temperatures?  What good is a wired camera if it doesn't stay charged and shuts down for several hours to recharge?  The app is horrible and does not open correctly every time.  When can we expect app and firmware updates from Google?

@strohmrs

I think you may have a defective Google Nest Camera (Battery). (Do you have the power cable feeding towards the FRONT of the camera?) We've had one plugged in with the optional power cable since Sept. 2021 and its "Live" all the time, showing as "Plugged in" with an infinity symbol under "Battery" settings. If we turn off the circuit that it's on, the battery level is always between 80% and 100% in temperatures as low as -20 F and as high as 100 F.

Thanks.  I know the cord is facing the right way or else the contacts wouldn't be touching.  I'll check the battery level with power removed when I get home to see if it looks like it is truly charging up all the way.

Hey folks,

@strohmrs Let us know how it goes after checking the battery level.

Thanks for the help, MplsCustomer.

I've checked the battery twice this week and it is holding at 100%.  I'll keep checking on it to see when it starts dropping, but wondering if cycling power to it, forces the charging circuit to stay active?  I don't want to have to keep doing that.  I might not touch it for a few weeks.  It usually starts telling me the battery is low about every 3-4 weeks.

Well, three days ago the camera said it was still at 100%.  This morning I got a notification that the battery was empty and it went offline.  It was wired the whole time and even if it wasn't, the battery should last longer than 3 days!  There has to be something wrong with this camera!

Hey folks!

Thanks for your help Archie and MplsCustomer.

strohmrs, thanks for further looking into this. I know how you feel about this. No worries, we'll figure this out — a few questions:

  1. Is it exposed to extreme temperatures? Is it exposed to direct sunlight?
  2. How does the camera feel(warm, hot, cold or normal)?
  3. Have you tried to factory reset your camera?

Looking forward for your response.

Regards,

JT
