Device rename not working

Schnoogemetzger
Community Member

Hi,

there seems to be a bug: I can't rename the Google Chromecast device. After renaming the device, the new name will be shown in the device information overview, but the device name is still "Living Room TV" (the default after the factory reset).

If I'm going to edit it again, the "Living Room TV" Name is shown in the dialog, but changing and saving it again, doesn't make a difference.

What I've done so far:

* Reboot of my phone

* Reinstall of the Home App

* Factory Reset of the Chromecast

Edit: I'm not alone: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Apps-Account/Can-t-change-my-device-name/m-p/2918

Thank you @JenniferV
>Also, I'd suggest you submit feedback about this via the Google Home app to let the Google Engineering team know about this

I've did this on the day I've opened this thread (~2 Month ago) 😉

Furthermore I don't understand this:
>If you're still encountering the issue, try this workaround:[...]

Is it fixed or not? If so, why would there a need to use a workaround?

Still not working.

I believe I found the issue. I deleted my saved groups and the device name changed.

The issue remains and is not fixed. It's happening with my Chromecast and the nest hub 2nd gen. For those who are pretending that renaming the device is working, I suspect they "think" it works because it "appears" like it is renamed but they probably didn't try going back to try renaming the same device again with a new name because it is where you type the name needed that you see that it is not working. An example: room name is bedroom 1, Chromecast device will take name of bedroom 1. When trying to rename it to kid1, it will appear as kid1 in the name field but if you try to cast to it from other devices, it will still be named bedroom 1 instead of kid1. If you go back to rename it, it is only where you can type a new name that you see that the new name is "never fully saved correctly". Those who are convinced that it works, it "was" working but it is not working anymore if you try renaming it again after. Do the tests and rename your devices to test name 1 then test name 2 then test name 3, verify the name appearing when you try casting to it in between the test names, the name showing in the available cast devices will not be changed from the old name. I suspect this issue with the home app rather than the device because I have the issue with different Google device models. I will do further testing with a nest mini, a nest hub Max and a JBL link speaker for the additional information in the feedback I will send.

The issue is definitely not solved. But here it kinda worked when I factory reset it. Let's say my device name was 'A' and I was trying to rename it to 'B', on the Device Information screen it was showing 'B', but any other place (including the device) was showing 'A'. When I factory reset it and added it again to my home, the name set was 'B'. If I try to rename it to anything else, it still doesn't work.

@ITClown I think the people that have posted here that they have succeeded in renaming their device (me amongst them), have genuinely succeeded. For instance I used (and I know not everyone has access to this option) my partners iPhone and the Google Home app on that successfully renamed the device.

But you could well be right that a lot of people out there that rename their device might not realise that it's not worked properly for quite a while, because at first it LOOKS like it has renamed.

Same problem here. Thank you everyone for posting, glad to know I am not alone! I have version 2.52.1.6 of Google Home too. I am posting a complaint on Google Play too. I hope it gets fixed!!

Add me to the list of people with the same problem.

Yep - one more added here. No matter what I try, the name I don't want remains in place. This is a silly issue for Google, I guess, since they seem to want to push it under the rug so to speak. Hope it gets solved sometime this year.

I also have this issue. Creating a new home as a workaround did not help.

Factory resetting the chromecast would let me change it to a different name, as long as that name is <room name> TV.

This has been working for some time, since an update.

I'm on the latest version of Google home and my Chromecast can't be renamed or moved rooms without factory resetting the device. That I would say is not a fix.

Same issues.

Ping Google.

Yes, same issue for me. With a newly bought Chromecast. Happens with my older Chromecast too. Both seem like they are changing the name, but nothing happens on save and it never changes. Only way to change the names is to reset the device to factory settings.

Good news, it looks like it is fixed in my case because renaming the Chromecast and the nest hub devices that were not happening is working for me on both after I updated the Google home app to the latest (2.53.1.5).

I tested with a different android tablet with the latest version of home app which works so I tried with the cell phone that I had the issue with after I verified that I didn't have the updated version and I still had the issue renaming the devices so I then updated the home app on the cell phone, tested again after and it was then working on the phone with the new name. I also have verified that the new name is also showing in the list of devices to cast to. I hope this is also fixed for you 😃 !

I can confirm, updated the Google home app and can rename rooms & Chromecast devices without issue now!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for sharing all your experience about this issue. The update with Google Home app bug where users cannot rename rooms on the Google home app is fixed under version 2.53. It started rolling out so you will be getting it in the next few days.

Thanks,

Jennifer

It's been two weeks, and I'm still stuck on Google Home 2.52.41.5 and can't rename my Chromecasts.  You suggested it would be rolled out "in the next  few days" which I take to mean ~3 days, but we're way beyond that.  Is there a way for me to force an update?  Shouldn't Google be forcing an update from their end for such a problematic bug?

@Trinition

Open Google Play app,
Click on your profile icon in the top right.
Click on Manage App and Device
Click on Updates Available or Update All.

I know how to check for updates, but no updates are available.

When Google puts out a new version of an app, they slowly roll it.out. they choose a small sunset of users first, and slowly expand the pool of users it is available to over time until eventually everyone has it.

So far it has been 15 days since we were told it would be a few days.

The rollout is too slow with no option to intervene.

My app version is 2.53.1.5, and I'm in Australia.

It shows the app was last upated on 31 May, so it's been over three weeks since the new version was actually realeased.

You could try sideloading the newest version from APKMirror:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-home/google-home-2-53-1-5-release/

I'm pretty sure I posted instructions for SSideloading earlier if you need them.

Holey Moley - they fixed the bug, it works now! Thank you for version 2.53.1.5!!

Add me to the list. It's an issue with multiple device types too. Changing homes and groups had no effect.

This is STILL a problem, and I'm using a Pixel 6! A Google product that can't even work with a GOOGLE-produced phone!

Renaming the device makes it 'appear' that it's renamed, until you back out. Upon doing so, you'll see the older name. Going to rename again still will show the new name you applied, until presented with the text entry, which then reverts to the older name.

Reinstalled Home app from Playstore: 2.52.41.5
Android version: 12

This problem is specifically an issue with the Home app.  Using Home version  2.52.1.6 on an older Android 7 tablet I had the exact problem as described above.  Got on my Pixel 4 phone with Home version 2.53.15.3 and I was able to rename the device as you should be able to.

Trinition

finally got the app update and was able to rename it.

Not one for posting on forums, but I figured out a hack that fixed the issue for me.

So hope this helps someone.

Factory reset the Chromecast > Start set up > Add to custom room (room name = your desired Chromecast name) > After set up move CC to the required room.

Good luck.

It's the Android app. I just tried moving and renaming on and old iPhone, worked flawlessly.

So, this for fixed for me with the update of the Android app.

Now it seems I can't move a device to another room.

I'm trying to move a Google Home Speaker from one room to another. I select the existing room that I want to move it to, then I'm prompted to enter a unique new for the device. If I skip or create a name, nothing happens when I click Next. The device doesn't move and it's not renamed.

It just returns to the details of the device.

If I rename the device it gets the new name, but I can't change the room.

I thought this had been fixed. And yes, it works on the iPhone app!!! Wtf.

Have the same issue with my chromecast. I cant set a name or change the room that the device is setup in. This is causing issues as it displays as living room tv
