Cannot connect Nest Protect.

Hello, everyone.

I've been trying to connect 5 Nest Protects to my home WiFi for over two weeks now. It simply won't happen. Each time, it shows error code P009(0.80). Here is a list of the things I've tried, mostly from other forum posts here. None have worked, and I'm hoping someone here can think of something I've yet to do.

1. I made sure to connect the Protects to 2.4 GHz WiFi, not 5GHz. I made sure the iPhone I'm using to connect them was on the same 2.4 GHz network.

2. I reset my router.

3. I turned off all my router firewalls. (I am using a Netgear AC1900.) Then I reset my router again.

4. I reset all the Protects to factory settings. They all have software version 3.5.0.3, which is apparently buggy. But I can't get the Protects to update, because they won't connect to the WiFi in the first place.

5. I've taken the batteries in and out of each.

6. I've put them right next to the router when connecting.

If anyone else has had this problem and solved it, please do let me know. I know that @johnwgallagher  @corbind @Sparebrain had similar issues.

This is really annoying--sounds like it is for a lot of people. Thanks in advance for your help.

Does it work if you temporarily connect them to a Wi-Fi hotspot?

  • Turn on the Wifi hotspot feature on a phone or tablet. If you're not sure how to do this, refer to the manufacturer's support website.
  • Connect a second phone or tablet to that Wifi hotspot.
  • You can then use that second phone or tablet to setup your device and connect it to the Wifi hotspot on the first phone or tablet.

I have the same issue. As it seems many others do as well. The issue is with the product. An engineering fail. I will try again when I have lots of time to waste.

Hi everyone,

@powers, I appreciate you being ahead of the troubleshooting steps. Aside from connecting the Nest Protect to 2.4 GHz and resetting your router, have you also checked for network settings of your router? If not, you can check this article to learn more.

@tomduffycpa, please also check for the network settings of your router using the article linked above.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your help, @David_K

Best,
