Communication between multiple smoke alarms

I'm trying to determine how multiple, networked smoke detector units communicate with each other.

I live on three floors.

If I put a smoke detector in the basement and also have one in my third floor bedroom - connected via wifi using the app - will the third floor unit alert me if the basement unit senses smoke?

The nest protects don't communicate to each other using wifi but their own mesh network, saying this having two full floors inbetween units MAY be an issue.  I also have a three storey home plus a basement, however I have a wireless nest protect on each floor and have had no issues.
