False Smoke Alarm Nest Protect Gen 2

Our Nest Protect Gen 2 (wired version) gave an emergency smoke alarm alert last night / this morning at 3:45am. No smoke present in the room (which is where our 20 month old daughter sleeps) and only 1 plug in use, which is for her camera/monitor. It has just done the same thing again (21:20pm) but thankfully we were able to pull it out of the ceiling before the extraordinarily loud alarm went off and woke our daughter (and terrified her) again. We have cleaned it so there’s no dust in the smoke chamber etc - is this a common fault? We have had it for around 2 years and no issues until now. Please help, as this is causing a lot of stress and upset.

Update: I am still getting notifications on my phone from the Nest app, saying ‘Heads up: Smoke in the Bedroom’ - the Nest Protect is no longer plugged in and has been disabled.
Someone please explain what is going on.

Have you taken the batteries out?  Same thing happened to me and the fire company disconnected from hard wire, but I had to take out the batteries to get it to stop.

Hey Kiki1984,

Thanks for posting here in the community forum. I'm sorry to hear your Nest Protect 2nd Gen is giving false smoke alerts. Don't worry; it's a pleasure to assist you.

It's great to know you've taken action on the matter of cleaning your smoke alarm to prevent a sensor failure. Please refer to this article to learn how to clean your Nest products.

Try to perform a safety checkup to ensure your smoke alarm is working properly. You can do it in two different ways.

On your Nest Protect

  1. Press the Nest button on a Protect. The blue light should turn on, and it will speak to you.
  2. When it says "Press to test," press the button a second time.

With the Nest app on a phone or tablet

  1. Sign into your account in the app.
  2. Select Nest Protect on the home screen.
  3. Tap Checkup at the bottom of the screen.

Then, stay alert and check how the smoke alarm reacts. If the trouble persists, please fill out this form; one of our specialists will contact you via email once you're done completing the form. Let me know.

Best regards,

Daniel

To me this sounds very much like a sensor failure. Otherwise a Spiderweb, if you haven't already, use compressed air on the smoke sensor. If the issue keeps occurring, contact Nest support and attempt a warranty claim.
