Heat sensor for our garage

NickieL
Community Member

We've added a garage addition to our Massachusetts home, the requirement for a CO is to have a heat sensor in the garage which will be compatible with our existing Nest smoke & CO detectors. We cannot seem to find the product we need - what do you suggest? We don't want to rip out the Nest system we currently have installed.

Looking forward to hearing your solution,

Nickie Lisella

Google nest Protect are good but in my opinion seriously flawed.

There needs to be a heat only model for kitchens and garages. Likewise all models should have the capability to interface to an external relay base for integration to fire/security panels for emergency services.

I.E - Practically useless for my elderly deaf father

I would recommend the Universal Security Instruments MIC1509S which has the 10 year battery, can be wire interconnected along with an alarm relay.

This has not only the Photoelectric and CO monitoring like the nest bus also the Ionization sensor to pick up flaming fires.

Separate interconnected Heat only sensor available

According to 2nd gen Nest Protect sensors - Google Nest Help, Nest Protect includes a heat sensor. Is that not suitable in Massachusetts?

@ralphcase yes, but no.  The Nest Protect isn't rated to work properly in the temperatures that could exist in the garage.   Also from experience,  if it is humid during the day,  then cold at night you can fog up the smoke sensor and make it constantly think there is a fire.  So you really need heat ONLY sensors in the garage.

I'm still baffled that they don't create a special version of firmware that ignores the other sensors and and rebrand it to the heat sensor model.

Thanks. This has been a useful thread for me. I'm still not sure exactly what to do in my new house being built now, but at least I understand the situation with Nest devices better now. I'm happy enough with Nest that I'd really like to go all-in with Nest if I can.

This has been a ongoing battle for years. They refuse to give us a heat detector only. In Scotland it is not law and they refuse to do it there as well, saying "too bad, use our stuff along side a compliant system".

Its insane, for a company that calls itself "leading edge" its pathetic as well...
