I work for an electrical contractor and have a client wanting to install the Nest Protect in his home. The local code requires that smoke and CO detectors be interconnected even if Wi-Fi is down. I cannot find any technical information regarding this.

Even when the device is disconnected from Wi-Fi, it will stay connected to other Protects in the home and continue to detect smoke and carbon monoxide. If one device detects a smoke or carbon monoxide event, all Protects will still speak a Heads-up alert or sound the alarm. They don't need to be connected to Wi-Fi for this functionality to work. Nest Protects connect wirelessly using a Nest-developed protocol called Weave that lets Nest Protects communicate with one another safely and securely without an active Wi-Fi connection.
