Our nest protect smoke detectors are expiring soon. Since they are no longer being made, what is recommended to replace them with? What works with the nest system?

Google partnered with First Alert, and the new First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm will be available in the US and Canada soon and interconnects with existing Nest Protect devices.

Hi David, can you be specific on the model for replacing my hardwired Nest Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm? I am so confused on which one is replacing the nest that we currently have.

First Alert Smart Smoke & CO Alarm will be available in hardwired or battery powered options in the coming months through US and Canadian retailers, on the Google Store and FirstAlert.com.

By “connect” do you mean it will fit in place of expired Protect units? (As and when)

Thank you, that's very helpful!

Finding these new First Alert devices on their website can be hard since they have not been released yet. I am being told they will release to pre-orders around June 12th, 2025.

One new feature of the wired version is that it has a third wire, allowing you to connect it to regular smoke detectors.
Here are the direct links to the wired and battery versions.

Thank you so much! Ours are all set to expire between July and March, so hopefully they're out soon

Is it not utterly infuriating that a completely working and fine device will have to be replaced because Google bought the company to what? run them down?
This means that apparently I have to replace devices that cost £100 each. Those devices have been completely rock solid, never let me down, always notifying, self testing and reporting home on a regular basis.
So apart from the loss of £400, there's the waste of materials and the effect that has on the environment... nothing made to last?
When I get products like this, many of my acquaintances will laugh and say why not buy a normal £5 smoke alarm. I've had them, when you remember to test they don't switch off, or you find they are not actually working, or batteries ran out. They don't tell you what's happing, give you directions, and send messages to your phone.
On the other hand, I think they might have been totally right now. Very disappointed.
So I can evaluate the options, does anyone know of a good product to replace them?
In the EU, from any ecosystem at all.

To be fair, all smoke detectors expire eventually. Mine will be 10yrs old over the next 6 months, so they're due to be replaced anyway.

They are still supporting them, but only to their expiration date, which all smoke detectors have.
These are Life Safety Devices, and First Response is a much better fit in my book. I will miss the Nest Protects.

I think the other issue for UK users is unavailability of First Alert in the UK. I accepted replacing unit after 10 years and not just batteries after 5. When we designed the apartment we fit the Protect plates flush and thought replacement would just be with same which fits into the plate. Really annoyed.

I understand your frustration, but manufacturers of all types are known for discontinuing products that impact users all the time. My business deals with this all the time, and it really hurts when it costs thousands of dollars for the device.

I think that's different. I have a 15 year old computer that's working fine. Not made any more, but it's fine. I have a 20 year old TV that's not made anymore, that also works fine...
Being told that the device has to be swapped out because it's been discontinued is not a normal practice.

Here in the United States, it is required by law, as the sensors used have a set lifespan.
You don't need to replace a Nest Protect until its expiration date. Google Nest just isn't going to be making new ones.
