Nest Protect False Alarm

Valentin1016

I’ve started to have have an issue with one of my detectors. It started today, I’ve already had the alarm go off 3 times saying there is smoke. I’ve checked to find nothing. Could my sensor have gone bad?

This can happen if dust has gotten into the smoke chamber or it can also be caused by steam.

Prevent false alarms - Google Nest Help

I'd recommend giving your Nest Protect a clean. Detailed instructions here:

Clean your Nest products - Google Nest Help

If the issue persists after a through clean:

  1. Go to Contact Us - Google Nest Help
  2. Select "Protect", type a brief description of the issue, then click "Next".
  3. Click "Other", then click "Next step" until you see the contact options.
  4. Choose to get a call or call or chat with the team as available in your country.

The overall lack of responsiveness or support (or even acknowledgement of issues) by Google of these LIFE SAFETY devices shows neglect and reckless disregard and has successfully eroded customer trust.

I think our best bet as a customer base is to make these problems known outside Google, so a trend can be established. Could you please take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

Hi! I have been getting the same false alarm. What's weird is that it doesn't even register on my phone on why it alarmed. When I had a real smoke, it clearly had a red on history and that the voice was saying smoke detected (something like that). These random ones (happened twice at night) is just an alarm that we were all startled and couldn't even listen to if there was a voice because of hurrying to silence it. I cleaned it the first time it occured so I'm at a lost here. I bought this 4 months ago and just opened it last month so it's practically brand new (with a manufacturer's date of 2023 (if not 2022). What could be the cause of it? Please help.

Thanks!

I had that issue as well, but I’ve had it for more than 3 years and I did clean it and issue went away. For you I’m not sure why it is giving false alarms, has it only happened theses two times? Also was it like today as well? I would probably try to do a safety check, to see if it’s reporting any issues.

Hi everyone,

@Charity1, thanks for bringing this up to us. What Valentin1016 has shared is right on the spot. Perform the Safety Check. Safety Checkup is an easy way to verify that Google Nest Protect’s sensors, power, Wi-Fi connection, speaker, horn, and light ring are working. You can run a Safety Checkup with the Nest app for a 2nd generation Nest Protect, or press the Nest button on any Nest Protect.

I appreciate your response, Valentin1016.

Regards,

Emerson

Hello Charity1,

It's me again. How's it going? Were you able to perform the steps I'm suggesting? In case you have an update, you know where to find us.

Best,
Emerson

I did and all is good, no issues found at checkup. But my alarm still went off 4 more times. I resetted it in hopes to just return it. Today is day two and it was silent  (unless it went off while I was away - but then again, my poor dog 😞

Hi folks,

I'm sorry for the delay and for the trouble this has caused you, especially to your dog. I know it's been a while now. I just want to check if the issue persists. Do you see any messages in the app about your Nest Protect? How is it?

I appreciate the help, @DanCoco, @David_K, @Valentin1016, and Emerson.

Kind regards,

Jenelyn
