Has anyone experienced having to change batteries every few months or overheating batteries?

Today the batteries in one of our Nest smoke detectors overheated so much they burned my hand trying to get them out. Very very dangerous. I put them out in the snow and they are still hot.

Did you have any warning that the batteries were overheating? Low battery warning? What batteries were in the unit? Factory installed or previously replaced? All at the same time?

Both due to the burn hazard, and the fact these detectors are equipment critical to life safety, the best way to help get this addressed would be to file a report to the Consumer Product Safety Commission if you are in the US.

Yes the detector with the hot batteries emitted single beeps in about 2 minute intervals. Took it down to see what the problem was, opened the battery compartment, and tried to get the batteries out, that's when I burned my fingers. Two of the batteries remained hot for a long time, even when put outdoors. These were replaced lithium batteries, all replaced at the same time about 6 months ago. And yes i'll try the consumer products reporting. thank you.

One of my Nest Protect v2 units had an overheated battery last week. The unit was produced in August 2022 and was using the factory installed batteries. Firmware version 3.5rc3.

About five months after I installed the unit, it gave a low battery warning. One of the batteries had a temperature of 85 degrees Celsius (185 F); it took about an hour to cool down to room temperature. The other batteries in the unit seem to be okay, but this one is completely flat now.
