I have a nest protect I got in 2014 and for some reason it never was able to connect to my nest app. I put it away & forgot about it. The other day I decided to try again….years later and It worked. But now it says it expired (makes sense, it says to replace in 2021) is it possible that it still can do it’s job since it’s has not been powered on (since the initial attempt) or used ever since I got it or did I just waste my money by doing that and need a new one anyway?

No, Once the Protect hits its expiration on-date it will shut down its sensors and not work anymore. This is required by law so old detectors can not be resold.
