Cannot get Google Home app to recognize Nest Thermostat

Details:

  • Google Home app is latest version (no update available)
  • I'm on an iPhone 10X running 15.0.1
  •

Steps being taken:

  1. Open app on iPhone
  2. Click + sign at top left
  3. Select 'Set up device' option under 'Add to home' section
  4. Choose 'New devices' option
  5. Tap 'Next' on 'Choose a home' screen where my home option is already checked off
  6. It goes through 'Looking for devices' animation
  7. On 'What are you setting up?' screen that shows next, select 'Thermostat'
  8. On next screen, select 'Nest Thermostat' option
  9. Scan the QR code that I have displayed on the thermostat screen (not the one on the back of the unit, though it shouldn't matter)
  10. It recognizes the QR code then returns me to the home screen of my "home" with absolutely zero indication anything is going on

I have exactly the same issue. During setup, it says my phone is connected to the device but on completing the installation routine, it does not add the thermostat to the app. The thermostat continues to say it is not connected to wi-fi and it does not show it is connected to an account.

I have restarted the thermostat. Done a factory reset. I have restarted my cell, checked location services, rebooted my router and run through the installation a dozen times. No effect. Unlike the "Learning Thermostat", there is no way to enter this information on the device. Without the thermostat, showing up in the Home app, I can do nothing. It works like a regular thermostat but that's hardly the reason I got it.

I wasted at least 6 hours over the past two days and have gotten nowhere. I've googled and read and watched videos until I'm blue in the face. The ONLY reason I have it is so that we can control it when we're away from home. My nest app disappeared and the google home app is USELESS. ARGH!

I have concluded that this unit is badly designed with possibly flawed software. I am going to return it or sell it and buy a second Nest Learning thermostat which is bulletproof and has worked for me for years despite its annoying habit of backsetting the temp when no one walks by the unit for an hour or two. At least it has two ways to connect to Wi-Fi and, my wife, who will never learn how to use a touch operated unit, will be able to use a unit she is already familiar with. I should have considered this when I purchased this model for our 2nd home. It also works in Nest which she is also familiar with.

What was Google thinking when they designed this mess?

I was having this issue today and called Nest customer service and they walked me through it successfully. My situation may have been different as I bought a house that came with Google Wifi and Nest Thermostats installed and I was having trouble getting my app to recognize any of the devices. Still, maybe calling them could help- I had no idea Google anything actually has live people answering customers

For what it's worth. I just went through tech support and had a lot of the same issue with my Nest Doorbell (Battery) product. One thing that was missing from the support page was the Factory Reset is different than the regular reset. These were the steps I was given:

  • Please plugin the charger to the doorbell and follow the below steps:
  • Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the doorbell.
  • Tip: The reset pin on the Nest Doorbell (battery) is located below the USB port on the back of the doorbell.
  • Insert and hold the pin for 12 sec (you can use an unfolded paperclip or a thumbtack):
  • At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you’ll hear a countdown tone.
  • At 12 seconds, the status light will be steady, solid yellow while the doorbell starts the factory reset, and you’ll hear a confirmation tone.
  • Release the button. Your doorbell will restore to its factory settings

Hopefully this helps someone else.

My nest thermostat shows up in the google home app but not the nest app.

Have not seen an answer that resolves the issue yet.

Found out the Nest Thermostat (non E / non Learning) does not work in the Nest App. Which is retarded.

“The Nest app is only compatible with the Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat. To view the Nest Thermostat, use the Home app.”

For those having problems with the Nest Learning Thermostat not showing in Home see the solution that worked for me in this post. https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Thermostats/Can-t-bring-nest-thermostat-into-Google/td-p...
