Hi..

My best is working fine with my account.. but house is going for rent and leaving the thermostat, what shall I do to make it possible to use for the tenants every time they change? Do I have to give them my account or shall I reset to factory settings every time new tenant take over?

Feldeen,

if you want to remove the Nest to take it to your new home, that is possible as long as you replace it with a thermostat capable of handing the duel fuel system.  That is an Air Conditioning system and a separate boiler with hot water radiators.

so let’s talk about a scenario when you have your house rented out, and I’m assuming you’re still going to own the home and you’re just making it rental property. Since there’s no Wi-Fi right now, the nest thermostat will simply function as it was last set up. that is the say if the screen has not got a four digit pin lock on it, any user can use the thermostat to change the system mode or the temperature set-point.

That let’s say your tenants bring in Internet service so they have Wi-Fi and they can stream movies and do all those fun stuff. You could ask them if they would be so kind as to allow your nest thermostat to be placed on their WiFi  network so that you can remotely monitor it in case there’s any system, problems or performance issues. You would simply ask them to go to the nest thermostat, go into SETTINGS, then NETWORK. At that point, the Nest will show you a list of Wi-Fi networks it can see, they choose the one that has their Wi-Fi network SSID of their home, and then enter the password for the Wi-Fi network. The nest will attempt to attach self to that network getting a DHCP address, and if it’s successful, your Nest app will be able to once again reach that nest thermostat remotely over the Internet.

Here is the second choice you can have. You can make the decision to remove that nest thermostat from your Nest app. At this point that nest thermostat will not have a nest app registered to it. When you rent a home, you can give your tenants the opportunity to put the Nest app on their phone and register their phone to the nest thermostat thus taking over control.  With this scenario, you must ensure that when those tenants are going to leave the home and move on, likewise, they must remove the thermostat from their nest app. If they do not, you will have to perform a software and hardware reset of the nest thermostat, which has to be done in person. And what that will do was it will turn the Nest back to Factory new out of the box settings. The first person that uses a Nest app to install that Nest Thermostat, can take ownership control of it.

This raises some of the weakness features of the design of the Nest Thermostat.  In the case of becoming rental property, you have to be concerned that the Nest Learning Thermostat has value and might get stolen.  The first line of defense is the use a PIN and lock the thermostats mode and temperature swing.  As a landlord would you want to be contacted every season to change system mode? The nest needs WiFi for remote access. As the landlord do you provide the Internet access for then rental property?

The approach I work with is as follows.
1. There rental property has an additional $300 technology deposit to cover theft of the Nest. As an option, I will remove the Nest Thermostat if they do not want to pay a deposit.
2. The thermostat remains registered to my account but the unit is not locked and they use it like any conventional thermostat.  I require them to give access to their WiFi when it is activated.

You will find that most tenants will not be “into” the use of or the value of energy savings the nest can lead to when properly configured and utilized.

Sounds sensible.. I will probably leave it under my account and leave it for them to use.. but what do you mean by “ I require them to give access to their WiFi when it is activated.  ”.. please clarify.. as I don’t want be contacted every now and then for this issue by tenants having problems with non functional nest..

In order for you to monitor the Nest Thermostat remotely. When the renting tenants take possession of the house, they will need to subscribe to an internet service provider for home WiFi.  Once their home Wi-Fi is set up you will need to be able to get the nest thermostat connected to that new network in order to reach the Internet so that you can monitor it remotely. If there’s going to be no Internet in the house after you leave, you will not have remote access to the nest thermostat.

I tried before to take away the nest thermostat.. but radiators didn’t work for some reason.. even when I disconnected the wires to the boiler..  so I decided to keep the nest thermostat .. to be as usual thermostat.. will see if this going to work..  there is no wifi now .. but when they connect a wifi .. I don’t know how can I get connected to it while I am living elsewhere.. and why shall I keep remotely monitoring it?? Sorry .. but it is quite confusing for me.. thanks again

One last thing I wish to pass on.  My family has several rental properties in which I installed Nest Learning Thermostats in.  We charge a specific “technology deposit” when they decide they want to add the nest to their smartphone as the owner account.  We over to let us be the owner and we grant them “family” member access.  This ensures we will not loose the thermostat however, if we do, the Deposit is forfeit.
