My current thermostat display is blank, but still working. I decided to buy a Nest for ease of control while I am away from home.
I wired up the system according to what I thought was correct and I get hot (heated) air when the A/C should be working.
The Picture below is from the thermostat that I removed. (and reinstalled when I couldn't get the Nest to work properly. the letters on the bottom are what is used for my system. The picture is from a little bit of an angle, so count the screw heads to align the letter with the wire.
Rheem systems use the "B" to cycle the heat pump.
Should I return the Nest and get the Nest Learning Thermostat or can I make this one work?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

I have ordered a Nest Learning Thermostat and some 18/6 thermostat wire. I will be installing them both later this week.
The reason for the thermostat wire is that I currently do not have a C wire available at the thermostat. Adding the 6th wire will make that possible.

Not for sure what you have going on there??? normialy blue would be common or C
it is possible that you may have a two stage heater tho . If so then you will need to run the common wire from furnace to new tstat . And just transfer the wires as they are
Red to Rc/RH
blue to w1
white to W2
green to G
yellow to y1
and just pick what ever color you want for the new common to C connection
FYI industry standard is
Red 24 volt hot - Rh/Rc
white - first stage heating W1
Green - blower - G
yellow - first stage cooling - Y1
blue or brown - common - C
if system has either two stage cooling Y2 or two stage heating -w2 , then wire color is just normally technicians choosing
I normally use black for w2 and pink for y2

Now that I have realized what you have do what i thinks going on is you mistakenly reinstalled your old tstat incorrectly. Move the blue wire to C and move the white wire to W . Don’t worry about the heat pump stuff you have a conventional system

and yes you have ever thing thing you need to make either new nest stats work.

The picture is from before I started trying to install the Nest Thermostat. After the Nest wouldn't work, I reinstalled the old thermostat and it is working fine, with the exception of the display being blank.(original problem)
I do have a 2 stage heating system, Heat pump and resistance strips. The Rheem system I have uses the reversing valve the opposite of most units. It reverses during the heating cycle.
The white wire is in the AUX/E slot and the blue wire is in the O/B slot. (using the bottom row of lettering)
I have returned the regular Nest Thermostat and ordered the Nest Learning Thermostat. Hopefully it will work.

Makes sense now !
If it’s not to late . The standard for Heat pump control wiring is 8 conductor 18ga . You would have all the correct colors then and if you were to ever up grade your system you will have the extra wires available for things like outdoor temp sensor and other options that are available. Spares wires are really nice if Fido ever found he likes the taste of 24 volts or weed wackier mishap.
Glad you got it under control & sounds like you’re all over it.

I'm also wondering if I will need to run a new thermostat wire? Will I need a C wire to power the Nest Learning Thermostat?
