Nest Learning Thermostat Generation 3 (NLT3) on Google Home app

LPCaillouet

I've recently migrated my Nest account to Google and now find that the Nest Learning Thermostat Generation 3 (NLT3) apparently works only on the Nest app, not on the current version of the Google Home app.  Are there plans to support NLT3 on the Google Home app in its future revisions?

Once setup with the Nest app, Nest Learning Thermostat models should show up in the Google Home app. If you're not seeing your thermostat in the Google Home app, try these steps:

  1. Make sure you're signed into the same account in both apps.
  2. Check your thermostat isn't in a different "home" in the Google Home app, by using the dropdown at the top.
  3. Try signing out and signing back into the Google Home app.

Thanks for your suggestion, but it did not resolve my problem.   I do use my same gmail address with both apps and have already migrated to Google from my original Nest app, where my Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation (NLT3) was successfully installed.  I assume that I have only one consolidated Google account referenced with my gmail address?  My NLT3 shows up only in the one and only "home" I have in my Nest app, even though I have an identically named "home" in the Google Home app.  I do have a second "home" in my Google Home app, but the NLT3 shows up in neither of those two "homes".   I've closed and re-opened the apps -- is that the same as "signing out and signing back into the Google Home app" as you suggested?

No, to sign out tap your photo or initials at the top right > tap the drop down at the right > Manage accounts on this device > Remove from this device.

I appreciate that clarification.  Using that information, I "signed out" using the "remove from this device" sequence, and then signed back in with the Nest app running at the same time.  The NLT3 still does not seem to be recognized by Google Home, but it does still appear in my Nest app.  (I also rechecked that the NLT3 didn't show up in the wrong "home" on the Google Home app.)   I even tried to "+ Set up device" / "New Devices" and scanned the NLT3 QR code -- no linkage established!  I also tried "+Set up device" / "Works with Nest" and get an error message "Oops! We've encountered an error.  Please try again."  (I've been down that road several times previously with no luck.)

Apppreciate you trying those steps. Let me ask a community specialist to see if there's any further troubleshooting options or steps we can try here.

Hello there,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for helping here, @David_K.

@LPCaillouet,  I'm sorry for any trouble this may have caused you, and I appreciate all the steps you've taken. I know that when a thermostat is added to the Nest app, it should instantly appear in the Google Home app, but let's try these steps here and see how it goes:

  1. Create a temporary home structure in the Nest app.
    1. Make sure to enter your correct home address.
  2. Once created, open the Google Home app and go to the newly created structure and delete it. Here's your guide on how to delete a home.
  3. Force close the Google Home app and reopen it.

Please keep us posted.

Regards,

Mark

Thank you, David, for referring my problem up the line.  And thank you, Mark, for weighing in.

Since my last posting, I have made some good progress – I de-installed my NLT3 from my Nest app, then re-installed it using the Nest app.  When I then signed into my Google Home app, the thermostat now does appear there!  However, it appears under the wrong “home” – I have two homes.  Is there an easy procedure to move a device from one “home” to the other”?

I have seen the following advice online ...

Move a device to a different home.

Note: Not all devices can be moved to a different home this way. Speakers, displays, and Chromecast can be moved, but Nest Wifi point and Nest Hub Max can't. Some Nest and Wifi devices can't be moved to a different home.

If you have a device that can't be moved to a different home, you need to factory reset your device and set it up again in a new home.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. Open the home the device is in.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. Tap Settings Settings and then Device information and then Home.
  5. Tap the home you want to move the device to and then Next and then Move device.
  6. If asked, tap the room you want to move the device to and then Next.

I tried those steps, but only the current "home" of my NLT3 shows up in the list of "homes" mentioned in Step 5.  Perhaps my NLT3 may be one of those devices that cannot be moved without resetting?

Hello LPCaillouet,

Great troubleshooting so far! Thanks for posting and for keeping us in the loop on what you've done to have your concern rectified.

Currently, moving the Nest devices is not possible. You can rename the home structure where your thermostat is, the same as in the Nest app, instead of moving to a different structure. To do this, make sure you're on the right structure, go to "Settings," and under General, select "Home Information."

Please let me know if that helps.

Best regards,

Mark

In your last posting you wrote “Currently, [emphasis added] moving the Nest devices [to a different ‘home’] is not possible”.  I can clearly see that is true CURRENTLY, but is there some chance that this will be possible IN THE FUTURE?  In other words, is such a change to the Google Home app being worked on?  I hope so, because I seem to have exhausted the possibilities for getting my NLT3 assigned to the correct “home” of the two “homes” I have on my Google Home app!

Right now, I have two Nest Doorbell wired Gen2 (NDw2), one each currently assigned to each of my two “homes” in my Google Home app, but I am unable to reassign my NLT3 to its proper “home”.

I’ve tried removing the NLT3 from the wrong “home”, resetting the device offline, and then adding it to the proper “home” using the Google Home app – that last “add device” step yields no response from the app!  So instead I’ve executed an “add device” to the proper “home” on the Nest app using my Google account – that process does add the NLT3,  but adds it to the wrong “home” on the linked Google Home app!  It’s as if (1) the Google Home app can’t handle a NLT3, and (2) my two “homes” were somehow cross-connected during Nest app migration?

This is still a mystery to me, but I do thank you very much again for your assistance!  Any further insights would be appreciated, as would a change to the Google Home app that would simply allow moving an NLT3 to a different “home”!

Hi there,

I'm sure it's confusing to have different home names in both the Nest app and the Google Home app, even though they're both at the same address. But I appreciate all of the steps you took to link your thermostat in the Google Home app.

Also, there are a lot of features that have been made possible because of customers' feedback. You can also send yours here. Rest assured that we're always looking for ways to improve, and we appreciate your feedback. Please let us know if you have any further questions before we close this thread in 24 hours.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks again, Mark and David!  I will post feedback urging a future update to the Google Home app to allow moving an existing Nest Learning Thermostat Gen 3 (NLT3) to a different “home”!

Hello LPCaillouet,

That's good to know! You can say, whatever you'd like to let us know especially those features that you want to be available on Google Home app as well as for the Nest devices. Also, I'm going to lock this thread within 24 hours. If you have any other concerns or questions, please feel free to create a new thread.

Best regards,

Mark
