Nest Learning thermostat

According to the compatibility chart it looks like the Nest Learning Thermostat CAN be used with a heating only system like fuel oil furnace. When I spoke to someone on the phone, she said it couldn't be used with heating only systems. Does anyone know for sure???

Hi folks,

@CBFox and davenel, thanks for the help!

@Mevns, thanks for reachingo out. Like what davenel and CBFox mentioned, you can use the Nest Thermostat for  heating only systems. You could learn more about compatibility on this help article.

Thanks,

Edward

You do not need a system that both heats and cools.  We have a heating-only gas boiler and the Nest Learning thermostat works fine.  The representative must have misunderstood your question, or else there's something you told her about your particular system that's incompatible.

I have used my Nest Thermostat with 2 different heating systems.  The first, a gas fueled boiler for radiators.  This one was well integrated and controlled the burner and the circulation (of water).  It was a newer model boiler (less than 10 years).  I don't recall the make.

I am currently using it with a Viessman... older 18 years.  I do not control the burner, only turn on/off the circulating pump.  It is a bit of a hack... I spliced the Nest controller into the pump...  It works decently.  The only issue is the burner goes into security mode sometimes in the wee morning... and of couse, the nest turns on the pump... which only circulates cold water until I reactivate the burner.  The boiler is on it's last legs... but the Landlord is waiting for it to die...

In both cases, there is no cooling system.

Hello Jake... .
I am good... I was simply pointing out that I have always used my nest on systems without a colling system

Thanks though
