Nest app freezes during setup of thermostat

Dfab

So I have my new nest thermostat up and running except the nest app won’t let me finish setting everything up within the app. I get to the point where it asks me which room I installed the thermostat in and when I click dining room the app freezes and won’t continue. I’ve uninstalled the app, restarted my phone to no avail tho. Any suggestions?

Definitely patience is key! I am a person that likes things done as quickly as possible. Once you get to the “choose a room” page or whatever, make sure a check mark appears. Once you see that check mark, wait. You’d think something as expensive as this device would be snappy, but unfortunately it’s not. I’ve tried multiple times, resetting, this and that. Nothing. Until I started reading the comments. Tried one last time, chose my room, saw the blue check and waited on the screen. Unresponsive yet again, but i stayed in it for a couple minutes and sure enough it skipped right through to the next step. PATIENCE IS KEY! 🔑

What is the next screen?

Hey All, I just resolved the issue via the chat line.  Here are the steps:

1. Remove the thermostat from your app.

2. go to reset and select WWN, then hit it to reset/restart.

3. Once restarted, go to thermostat and select wifi connection and manually connect the thermostat to your wifi putting in the password.

4. Once you have wifi to your thermostat go to the Nest app on your thermostat settings.

5. Do not use QR code but use the Entry Key.  Choose that on your app when adding the thermostat back to your app and put in the entry key provided from your thermostat.

6.  That should do it!  It worked for me.

This worked for me on the first try. I would mention, do not become hesitant when it mention the merging of accounts. Just acknowledge it. I had to read what it said because I was paranoid. But, just ignore it. It works.

Did anyone else try this?

This is happening when installing with iPhone. When you get to the screen where you choose what room  the t stat is installed, put the phone down and wait 3-5 min and it will move forward in the install process.

The waiting 3-5 minutes worked !

I had the same trouble. I removed and deleted app, restarted iPhone. Finally what worked was setting up on my iPad. Once set up, I was able to use the app on my phone. If possible, for your sanity, try setting up on a separate device.

This was a newly installed thermostat. The tech couldn't get the app to work. Always froze at the same spot. Then a message that something went wrong & try again. The tech left & I turned off the phone and deleted the app and started over. This went on for several hours. Finally the message didn't come up, just the frozen screen. I left it and hours later it connected. I have a desktop & iPhone. No other devices so I needed this to work. There is definitely something wrong with the  with the app. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem of freezing when selecting a room. I have an iPhone. I installed the Nest app on my husband’s Android and was able to continue setup there!

I wish I had seen your fix sooner for this "selecting room" business.  Hours of resets on thermostat and iPhone, turning off/on with no results.  I added the app to the iPad and finished in seconds!  Thank you

When you get to where it freezes,  pick the room your nest is in then set your phone down for a few minutes. It will move on and continue the install. This is an issue when using iPhones. Once installed everything is fine.

I set my phone down and left the app up for a few minutes after it froze when it asks to pick a room as a few people suggested. This worked for me. Took about 3 minutes.

Same here. Multiple tries fail. App freezes. This product/app is poorly designed.

Just bought a Nest Thermostat, it's been 3 days, trying to integrate it to the Google Home app, but it freezes when it is connecting to the device. The image of the coloured shapes (Wi-Fi shape dancing) froze, then nothing!

I tried restarting my iphone, restarting the nest thermostat, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, creating a new home in the home app, creating a new home in the nest app.  It freezes every time on the connecting to the device by scanning the QR code.

Please help.

Hi seberoy,

Thanks for being a step ahead of us. Please try to wait on the page for 5 minutes or more until the setup goes through. It worked with other Community members. Let us know how it goes.

Its been an hour or more not touching my phone. The screen was stille froozen, see the screenshot:

This screenshot leads me to believe you may be having an issue with connecting to WiFi or not finding the device you are trying to install. This screenshot is different than the screen freeze during setup in the Nest App when you reach choosing a room your t-stat is located in.

The thermostat is installed in my detached garage.  I installed a D-Link router to share the same wifi to my garage (just like a repeater). The router is a D-Link DIR-1750 (AC1750). Maybe there is something blocking the connection in the new router. Do you have any insight for me ?

Check your WIFI strength where your t stat is. You can do that with a free app. If you have a weak signal, you may consider a Wi-Fi Mesh system to ensure you have good Wi-Fi throughout your home. Especially if you think you will be adding more smart devices to your home. A Mesh system is a better option than an extender.

It's not an extender, but a router (Dlink DIR1750) it is configured for exposing the same Wi-Fi as the home. The router is newly installed in the garage. Thermostat Nest is in the garage

I tried to bypass the new router by powering it off and approach the thermostat near the house so I can connect it directly to the main wifi, but the app is still freezing after few minutes (same error) I think i will simply get refund and buy another one

I decided to try it with my old Android phone. Charged the battery back to life and resurrected my Google account on that phone, then retried the connection to my Nest Thermostat. Off course, everything went flawlessly, not even weird waiting moment to do.  My old phone is a super laggy Samsung A5. My current phone is an iPhone 12 Pro Max.  Just to let you know, if you guys wants to fix that bug. Everything is also fully updated on my iPhone.

Hello everyone. So its true. You have to leave the app to do its thing while you wait. First reset the Nest app on your phone meaning, remove the device (thermostat). Reset the Nest Thermostat and start over adding the device. When you get to the section where you need to choose a specific area/room where the thermostat is located, don’t try to make it work. At this point the app will do this, leave the phone near the Nest thermostat for about 5 minutes. When you return it will be finished setting up and you can complete your set up in the app. Trust me this works. Its a strange config but it will work. Good luck!

Nest 3rd freezes up during setup. I looked at all the recommendations and down loaded the app on two phones and two iPads and all froze on location selected. Eventually was able to select the same location on each device.  Decided after selection on each to make a game out of it.  Placed bets, walked away and in about 15 minutes the oldest iPad won thus completing the install.  🤓

Mine worked after I remained patient for 5 minutes

Its Freezes again and again on my I phone .. App connected but keep saying setup not complete .. so frustrating !!!

I added the app to my iPad instead of my phone.  As soon as I did it, I finished the setup in just seconds.  I refreshed Nest on my computer and phone and it had the update.  Try that.

Garbage product.   It was an update that did this.   Google should be sued and refund all customers.

Product freezes and unable to pick location.  Letting it wait does not help as just in a constant loop.

NestaFailed

Unable to choose where did you put thermostat.

Steps that fail over and over again

1. open nest

2. complete setup on thermostat incomplete setup

3. press complete setup

4. left at list of locations unable to choose as frozen

5. wait and then app goes back to beginning and repeat above steps

6. replace Nest with solution that works and sue Google with class action lawsuit all together
