Nest app not connecting to thermostat

BidDad

I have a 1st/2nd generation Nest Thermostat. I've had a couple years everything working great. But back when Google took over Nest, I lost connection between the thermostat and my Nest App.  Because I am now traveling more, I really need to use the app so I can access the schedule/calendar and all the other functions.  So I either need to find a fix, or go with another manufacturer because I am spending too much time and see no light at the end of the tunnel.

I've followed all the recommended steps: rebooted my Wi-Fi, off loaded the app, then later reinstalled the app, my I-phone is set to both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The thermostat and my app both say they are connected to my Wi-Fi.  When I go to the dial on my thermostat through setting, it won't display the 7-digit number and says there already is an account. I have also scanned the QR code on the back of the thermostat, but the thermostat is already installed, so I don't want to follow that process.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

When a nest thermostat was originally installed, and it was linked to a Nest account, that nest account is registered to that particular thermostat. By doing a system reset to factory settings you do not disassociate the relationship of that set thermostat to that nest account. If you need to do that, the first thing you need to do is go into your app and perform a remove device function. Once a device is removed, you do a system reset and restore to factory Settings. Now follow the process to reinstall your thermostat only this time tell it it’s already installed and then it will link your Nest account with that thermostat again.

Cooling Wizard,

I just prepared a lengthy follow up, but Google would not send it because it would 'not authenticate'. It also wouldn't let me copy and paste. So the following is a short version of what I had prepared. Hopefully Google will send this.

Your directions are clear. I was not able to use my Nest app to control the Nest thermostat. When I went to my app to 'remove the device', I did not find it. I did the following: 1) removed the app and reinstalled, 2) then went to my app and went to 'Settings' then 'Account', which required my to sign in with Google. Google does not have Face Recognition, but instead made me go through 2 authentications (text, then email), and I tried to 'Remove Home' which directed me to the Settings on my phone which was a dead end. 3) I pulled the face (dial) off the thermostat to get to the 7 figure 'Entry Key', but there was none and had a statement that "you are connected". I looked for a QR Code on the back of the dial, but none existed, probably because it was generation #1.

My problem doubles because I have Nest in two residences. The second residence had the same problem, but it is probably a generation #2 because there is a QR Code on the back of the dial.

Although this is not my first rodeo with tech, I can't believe this isn't more straight forward than it is. Most likely operator error. I am open to other thoughts or comments. Thanks for the help so far.

Hi folks,

@BidDad, thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry for the late response.

You can go to this page and follow how to remove your Nest Protect from the Nest app. After you remove your Nest Thermostats from the app, you may now proceed to add them back on the app by following the instructions in this guide then let us know if that works.

I appreciate your help, @CoolingWizard.

Best,

Zoe

Zoe I have not made any progress in solving my problem. When I originally installed Nest it worked for many years. But for sometime I cannot connect my phone using Nest, since now it is owned by Google.  I am on vacation now and will ask for your advice when I return.  Otherwise Nest is no longer of any use to me

Thanks

Hello there,

I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Thanks for your assistance here, Zoe.

@BidDad, how's it going? Have you tried reconnecting your thermostat in the Nest app? If you haven't yet and have not reset your thermostat, you can go directly to your thermostat's Network settings and disconnect it or reset the network from the Reset option. Once disconnected, reconnect the thermostat to the Wi-Fi network and attempt to read it in the Nest app.

If the issue persists, resetting the thermostat would help so you can reconfigure it.

Let us know if that helps.

Regards,
Mark

I don't want to be a nudge, but I'd like to check if you were able to get your thermostat working in the app. Feel free to reach back if you still need help.

Thanks,
